Question about GE PDS22MIS Bottom Freezer Refrigerator

Open Question

We are having a repeated issue with our GE profile bottom freezer. Model PDS22MIS. The unit seems to go into defrost mode, boosting the temperature in the fridge into the mid-40's and in the freezer into the mid-teens. It did this about a year or so ago, and now it is has done this twice in about 2 months. Reading other posts it seems there is a defrost thermostat or timer or heater that may be the issues. Any thoughts on diagnosing the issue? I wasn't able to find a technical service guide for this model online.

SOURCE: GE TFX27PF refrigerator and freezer still not getting cold enough

the partial frost pattern is an indication of low refrigerant, restriction or bad compressor. if the unit is under 5 years old this repair will probably be under warranty thru GE. if out of warranty then you are looking in most cases between 200-500 dollars for repair. good luck Thanx peyton

SOURCE: PTS25LBM GE Profile Defrost cycle messed up

The GE Profile Refrigerator has circuit boards and sensors are in the freezer that sends a signal to the circuit board to begin and end the defrost cycle. It is very possible the sensor or the circuit board are defective and will need replaced. I will help you solve this if you like. This refrigerator is complex and will take more discussion with you to complete the repair, I am here to help, let me know, Thanks, Sea Breeze

SOURCE: Frost build up in freezer and warm temp in a GE Profile TFX22PRXB

Modern refrigerators are designed to self defrost and it is essential to the airflow to have an evaporator coil that is clear for air movement. If the rear interior panel of the freezer has frost appearing, it is most likely a defrost problem and must be corrected before temperatures can be restored to normal. Your refrigerator most likely has a defrost timer located on bottom behind grate, or inside behind control panel. Could you find the correct model number so I can help you better. Thanks, Sea Breeze
Look at following areas for the model number

  • Beneath Or Inside Food Compartment On Cabinet Frame
  • On Plate Lower Front Or Rear Of Cabinet
  • Beside Compressor Door On Right End
  • Near Rear Of Cabinet
  • Inside Liner At Top

SOURCE: My freezer was developing frost / not cooling very good.

Hi, With the information you supplied i'm going to assume there is an ice build up at the rear of the freezer. Your problem is going to be with your defrost system. I will also assume you have the ability to repair this yourself. This is going to be one of three problems with your refridgerator, 1st thing to do is remove shelfs and panel in the back of the freezer...you should see ice build up on the evaporator...don't worry get a hair dryer and melt the ice. Next locate the wires for the heater...using a multi meter test the heater for condinuity...if the heater is bad replace it, If the heater is good replace the defrost thermostat..the stat normally is a barrel looking part clipped onto the evaporator pipe. The last possible problem could be the evaporator fan, have you heard the fan running in the past few hours?..if you are not sure pull the panel out to where you can see fan and watch it over an hour to see if it turns. I have included links with pictures of what the parts you need to check are: http://romulusappliance.com/manufacturers/maytag/refrigerators/575432.JPG defrost stat http://www.hotekalliance.com/UploadFiles/2008627111553382.jpg heaters http://www.applianceblog.com/archives/EvapMotor1018185.jpg evap fan. Hope this helps. If you have any other questions please feel free to comment again. If you decide to get a repair guy in should not cost you any more then $120 - $200 depending on make/model/problem Good luck! P.s Please don't forget to rate my solution Thanks! and thanks for using Fixya. Mike

GE bottom freezer stopped cooling

The unit needs two fans running and good airflow, one fan outside cools the condensor coil and the other inside the unit blowing across the evaporator. The compressor must start up. The defrost timer stops everything and switches on a heating element to defrost the evaporator for several minutes. Please verify these conditions.

Sorry to hear about your problem.

Sounds like you have a defrost issue. Hence your unit is not defrosting. All of this apply's if your freezer side has ice . If not. you have other issues, this does sound funny, but this is why your refrigerator side is warm, or not cooling.

Here is a list of some things that can go wrong.
1. Defective heat coil
2. Defective defrost timer
3. Defective defrost sensor
4. Defective Fan
5. Defective compartment inlet damper (on some models)

You should call a service company to resolve your issue.

Freezer won't maintain temperature any lower than 16-18

It appears that your refrigerator is missing defrost. It will be difficult for anyone to provide photos of your defrost heater. I recommend that you unplug long enough to allow defrost to begin manually so we can get freezer door open and remove frozen goods long enough to place somewhere safe until we examine the defrost heater and defrost thermostat. At this point the only pictures will be the ones you email me. This appears to be a new breed of Profile from GE. If you would like to attempt this please let me know. The defrost heater is part number WR50X10043 but that means nothing until we do some testing, Let me Know, Sea Breeze

Freezer temperature fluctuating way up and down. 0 recommended. 11 degrees right now. 18 earlier. Food defrosting. Ice cream soft. GE Profile bottom drawer freezer. Only 3-4 years old.

Your problem could stem from an issue with the defrost timer, the compressor or its attachments (e.g.: relay, capacitor, etc.), or the freezer/evaporator fan motor. Contact an appliance service company.
