Question about Televison & Video

4 Answers

For several months, it took a long time for the TV to power on. We would hear a high-pitched sound, then the power light would flash, and it would stop. It would automatically retry, and eventually, it would power on and work fine for however long we watched it. Then, the next time we would turn it on, the same pattern would recur. It took increasingly longer to start, and eventually, it wouldn't start at all. We replaced the lamp, and we tried a new lamp ballast, but that didn't help. When we returned the lamp ballast, we accidentally returned our TV cable that connected it to the board, so now we're missing that cable. We think the problem might be the color wheel, but we can't go any further without the missing cable. Where can we find a replacement? Is the color wheel the likely problem?

    RCA HD61LPW42

  • mcd5brady Sep 06, 2009

When I made my initial query, the Fixya site prompted me to ask a question about RCA HD61LPW42, which I had used as a search term. I thought it was the subject of my query, which is why I didn't include it the body of the text. When you first responded asking for a model number, I sent a reply with the model number: RCA HD61LPW42. Now I see your note saying that my reply didn't make any sense, and you once again assumed that we were talking about a Samsung. It's not a Samsung -- it's an RCA. I'm a bit confused as to why you still don't see our model number. Or is there some number you require other than HD61LPW42? Is there a way I can view our entire chain of correspondence? I'm new to Fixya's email support service, so maybe I'm not looking in the right place. Key to our going any further with a repair -- whether it's the color wheel or not -- is obtaining a replacement for the cable we accidentally returned with the lamp ballast. Can you address that issue please? What's it called, and where can we buy one? Thanks.

Hi, can you advise me as to how I can obtain a replacement for the lamp ballast cable I accidentally sent back with a part return? The parts company was unable to help.

  • mcd5brady Sep 06, 2009

Partstore.com is where I purchased the lamp ballast, which it turned out was not the problem with my TV. I returned it to them, accidentally leaving the cable that goes to our TV board attached. It's a short cable -- maybe 4 inches long. They were unable to locate the cable or to identify it for me, though they did credit me for the returned part. I would have happily purchased a replacement cable from them but they couldn't help. I don't know how to search for a replacement elsewhere, because I don't know how the cable would be identified on a parts list.

  • mcd5brady Sep 06, 2009

I need to replace a short (about 4-inches) cable that attaches the lamp ballast to the board of my RCA HD61LPW42 rear projection TV. I don't know what it's called or where I can buy it. I accidentally sent the cable with a part return to Partstore.com. The company was unable to send it back to me or give me any suggestions on how to identify/replace it.

  • mcd5brady Sep 06, 2009

Partstore.com is where I sent the cable (by accident). They couldn't find it to return to me or even tell me how/where to get a replacement or what to call it for search purposes. Can you give me a phone number or email to contact RCA directly about this? My TV is old and no longer under warranty -- I don't have a tech support number, and I wasn't able to find anything helpful on the RCA Web site.

  • mcd5brady Sep 07, 2009

Fixya experts keep referring me to Partstore.com for a cable I need to replace, but Partstore can't help me. I accidentally sent Partstore the short cable that attaches the lamp ballast to the board of my RCA HD 61LPW42 rear projection TV when I returned a lamp ballast to them. They were unable to locate and return the cable and said they did not have a replacement for sale. They couldn't even tell me what to call it so I could look for it elsewhere. So Partstore.com is not the solution. One Fixya expert suggested I contact RCA, but I have an old set that's not under warranty. I couldn't find a phone number or email address to contact RCA with this query. Any suggestions?

For the tv cable the best and affordable option is nearest local tv repair shop.but if they don't have this required cable there are on-line options which provides all this required part 1)www.radioshack.com 2)www.bestbuy.com 3)www.shopjimmy.com 4)www.partstore.com you will have to check all this sites 1 by 1 mostly all will have the required cable but they also have customer support and email facility so before getting please confirm the exact cable which is missing so you get the right thing. ----------- and now about the problem.in this types of tv.there are mostly three problems due to which tv takes time to start up. 1)the lamp (mostly this is the problem) 2)the ballast 3)the colour wheel. as per what you mentioned ,it says that you replaced this both parts only colour wheel needs to be replaced and tested.so mostly colour wheel will solve the problem.you also mentioned the high pitched noise that comes when colour wheel is faulty this indicates colour wheel.the noise comes when wheel gets old and its alignment gets disturbed and while spinning it makes noise.but in some rare cases it has seen that.when ballast goes short it damages lamp as well as colour wheel.so if this is in your case then all three parts needs replacement to solve the problem.lamp, ballast and colour wheel. ------------ for getting colour wheel all of the above links provide each and every requirement of the tv parts. so you can also get the colour wheel from the provided links.-------- this will help.------ thanks.please keep updated.please do rate the solution if helped.thank you for using fixya.

Your issue with either be the color wheel or the power supply. Personally I would try them in that order as well...

As far as the cable you can call the manufacturer directly for something that small and unusual. Otherwise you could probably find it at www.partstore.com

Www.partstore.com try them, they have almost everything you can think of at pretty good prices. I suggested another poster to them and they were very happy with it.

What is brand and exact model number? Samsung?

First, your reply does not make sense--no model number--let us make a few assumptions--it is a Samsung--before it went out you heard a fan like noise or high pitched sound--if it is a Samsung DLP set---unplug it and REMOVE THE LAMP AND LOOK where the lamp faces, take a look at the color wheel--depending on model it is a round plastic wheel with pie shaped color segments--you may need a light and or a mirror to see it--what you are looking for is segments broken, shattered or missing--if you are missing a cable from the ballast you need to recover it or replace it-hard item to order-----if the wheel is damaged you should be able to see it'; it has two cables that plug into the optical engine; one has 3 or 4 wires and a square plug--the other is a flat orange ribbon cable that has contacts only on one side--if removed you have to get the replacement plugged in correctly--if you see the wheel and it is damaged or shattered-you have found your trouble--the set will detect if the wheel is not turning at all or at full speed--it turns at about 14,000 rpms--and if it is bad the set will either come on for a few seconds or shut down the lamp--This is what happens when you guess at what is wrong---the Ballast has to be working and connected for the lamp to come on----Let us start with the color wheel=====look close and see if it is damaged--we are able to save some time here--you can ask me direct any questions you have--etower.766@netzero.net----look on side of set or back and provide me complete model number--the color wheel is more likely bad if you heard a fan like noise or high pitched sound before the set went out.

Toshiba HD ready TV ct 90158 makes high pitched sound

A high pitch sound can be a capacitor losing power it would sound a bit like a fire work. most have back up on the board but it put more pressure on them the more times you use the tv. would check them and replace. all of them can be 5 in a row in some models.

I have a few questions which will determine what your problem may be.

Did or does the set make a high pitched fan like sound or a high pitched whine?

What have you examined so far?

As far as a lamp it is unlikely it will cause such a sound but if you remove it look to see it is intact and not shattered.

my d52w19 chassis itc222 as posted most of the time wont turn on and the green light flashes three times every time it makes a small noise. sometimes it does turn on and you hear a little pop and the tv fires up.  latley there is a really high pitch noise that will slightly change pitch if you move the tv or put slight pressure on the top or botttom rear part of the chassis. thanks for the help as I have seen that this has been posted before without mention of the high pitch noise.

Television won't power up

It sounds like the high voltage circuit got damp and arced. This arc caused the horizontal output transistor to short.
You might try replacing the output transistor if you're experienced in this type of repair. If not then you need to take it to a repair shop.
The "whistle " you're hearing is the power supply indicating that it has a short on its load. When the power supply has an over load (short) its frequency drops down when your ear can hear it oscillating. This type of power supply is a switching power supply normally operating a several thousand hz(cycles) which is out of range of human hearing.
