Yes you may have to replace it.Most dell batteries will charge very quickly after twenty minutes or so it should not show orange light at all.Question though can you power on with the battery only.If you can how long before you have to plug in the adapter. You can try this however it may or may not work, take a old toothbrush and clean the contacts on both the battery and the computer.Try again to charge the battery.
Good Luck

I had the same exact computer and my battery was out, yes you're going to have to replace the battery. Unless you can leave it on the charger all the time. But there's also a way you can buy new batteries and rig it up yourself. If you're not good with wiring things, just get a new one. But it's cheaper, but DANGEROUS.

No I meant going to buy new nickel-cadium batteries from the internet, they're just like AA's. But no, if you purchase the new one that just plugs in there's no danger. I guess I shouldv'e rephrased that. All you have to do is swap them and voila! :) By the way you're welcome.

Continuous alternating one green and three flashing red battery

note.gif NOTE: Battery operating time (the time the battery can hold a charge) decreases over time. Depending on how often the battery is used and the conditions under which it is used, you may need to purchase a new battery during the life of your computer. Check the battery status light — If the battery status light flashes orange or is a steady orange the battery charge is low or depleted. Connect the computer to an electrical outlet.
If the battery status light flashes green and orange, the battery is too hot to charge. Shut down the computer, disconnect the computer from the electrical outlet, and then let the battery and computer cool to room temperature.
If the battery status light rapidly flashes orange, the battery may be defective. Contact Dell _I found this on : http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/latd820/en/ug/index.htm Hope this helps and good luck. if i "fixed ya" please rate me. thanks-jmattes

Flashing Lights On My Computer?

You've changed the batteries, but are they fully charged?

I usually leave my charger in all the time when using the laptop as Advent laptops have bad battery life.

Try charging it for max 8hours. If the problem stil persists, then i guess its something internally wrong with the laptop?

Or even, the charger wire may be a bit loose which is preventing it from charging the laptop either completly or partly.

Hope that helped
