Question about Office Equipment & Supplies

2 Answers

I need to install/update my Canon Pixma iP1700 driver but everytime I run the supposed correct driver/update it constantly fails. This printer worked perfectly on my old printer with Windows XP but I cannot make it work with Windows Vista regardless of how many times I try to download and install the driver even from the Canon and Vista websites. I'm really at a loss on this one.

Thanks for your help Muebe. This is a whole new computer... I'd give anything to have my XP back. I will uninstall everything I can and try again. I thought I did this befoer but maybe I missed something. This time I'll try to be thorough. Then I'll try it all again. This really is the craziest thing I've ever had to deal with - at least with a supposed "plug and play" type device.

Ok, you've got me thinking here. I can't remember if I had the printer hooked up or not but I will make sure that is is not this time around. Also, when I bought this new computer it said it the operating sysetem was Windows Vista 64-bit but everything I see when things pop up on the computer and what not says that it is the 32-bit version. Obviously there is a difference, but should I be concerned since it was sold to me as having the 64-bit version?

Are you downloading the correct driver?
You should install a full driver, not an update, because updates sometimes require that a driver is already installed.

If your system is Vista 32-bit, you should be downloading and installing iP1700 Printer Driver Ver. 2.00 (Windows Vista/XP/2000)
Name of the file: ip1700vst200ej.exe
Version: 2.00
Size: 4.29 MB
Date: 09/26/2007

Go to to CANON support homepage for your printer:
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=DownloadDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=357&modelid=13364

Under the "Drivers & Downloads" tab, select your OS and then click the file link under the "Driver" section.
Read and follow the installation instructions in the next page.
Do not connect the printer to the computer prior to installing the printer driver. Do it only if and when the installation process tells you to do so or after it is concluded.

After installing the driver, you can also download and install the software for your printer and OS available from the software section of the downloads page.

*

For more insformation on how to install the driver and software, make sure you read the FAQS:
8. How do I install the software / driver - Windows?
and especially
9. How do I install using a downloaded driver?
To access this FAQS, click the "Support and Service" tab on CANON support homepage refered to above and then click on the 'Frequently Asked Questions" link.
Good luck!

Attention: The driver for Vista 64-bit is different from the one for Vista 32-bit. You must select the right OS to get to the page with the right driver/software for your computer.

The driver file specifications I mentioned in my prevous post were those of the Vista 32 driver.

Right click MyComputer icon, click on Properties and check.

Did you do a upgrade to vista from xp? Or is the computer with vista a different computer? The reason why I ask is if you did an upgrade the old drivers and software for xp may still be in the system. The first thing I would do is go into the device manager and remove the printer and un-install any software for the printer. Re-boot the computer and windows vista should detect the new hardware. I would let vista check online for the driver and install it. If it cant't find one the choose the driver you downloaded online. After that then try installing the printer software. Also make sure that when you go to print something that your printer is set up as the default printer.
