"Improper Image in use" Error during system recovery

HI There,

I'm trying to do a system restore with the recovery CD's on my ailing Vaio PCV-W20 Version V83.0. It used to be my kid's computer until it died (don't know why) about 3 years ago.

When you turn on the computer before recovery, I get the normal black screen displaying the loading process then this error line: Error loading operating system.

I then insert CD #1 and restart the computer. It goes through
booting from CD, loading the recovery utility, the warning and default screens. I make my choices and then start. It gets to 2% and the pops up this error: "Incompatible image in use". I click OK, then I get "The recovery process is incomplete. Your system may not operate properly". I click OK to that and the whole thing starts all over again.

Is there any hope of repair for this computer? If so what do I need to do?

I appreciate your help on this matter.

Sony actually has that feature within that system. Go to Recovery discs / Recovery Media Kit (RMK) links. There are 2 options.

I want to restore my sony vaio pcv-re550 to factory state condition. my sister gave me the comuter but she doesn't know where any of the disc are.

As soon as you power up your system keep tapping F8 repeatedly until another screen pops up.
You can select reinstall Operating system (ie windows) / restore factory settings etc from there, Choose option which is suitable for yourslef. By doing it this way it reinstalls the OS that is already stored on your Hard drive so no disc is required.

Ok try this, at boot up press F8, when the Menu comes up, choose Safe Mode, but this time instead of going to the desktop, choose System Restore, follow instructions, and when the Calender type window comes up, simply choose a time BEFORE, the time it went faulty. This should completely restore you to working again. As long as there are NO other problems. -
