Check if the flywheel (with magneto magnet) may have sheared the key and it is out of timing.

I have a 2000 5,7 vortec while drivig it started to misfire and backfire and now it won't run acts like it jumped time

You probably lost the crank position sensor or the cam position sensor. Pull a spark plug and see if there's any compression. If it's jumped time you'll have reduced or no compression. If it jumps time enough it can bend all the valves in the engine. If there's plenty of compression then look at the sensors.

Why cant I pull the starter cord

If its on the compression stroke when you are pulling it will be hard to pull it, because you're fighting against the compression of the engine, make sure the valves are at the correct position and not fully closed when you are pulling.

Kawazaki kdx 125 wont start

KICK HARDER TRY PULL STARTING IT..IN SECOND GEAR..DOES IT HAVE ENOUGH COMPRESSION TO START?IT SHOULD START PULLING IT...START OFF WITH NO THROTTLE THAN IF NOT STARTING CRACK THE THROTTLE SO LIGHTLY AND SHE SHOULD FIRE OFF WHILE IN GEAR BEING PULLED OF COURSE BE CARE FUL NOT TO RUN INTO. WHO EVERS PULLING YOU..USE A LONG TOW ROPE..IF YOUR NOT A SEASONDED RIDER AND KNOW YOUR BIKE VERY WELL I WOULD NOT ATTEMPT THE PULL START...IF NOT CHECK YOUR COMPRESSION AND TIMING..MAJOR VACUUM LEAK MAYBE AT BASE GASKET..IS ENGINE SUCKING TO MUCH AIR? GOOD LUCK..

1976 VW 2000cc bus, fuel injected, automatic single loud backfire, then dead! Pulling out of a parking lot at around 25 mph, I had a single very loud backfire, then the engine died. The motor will crank /...

I'd check the compression now, before getting involved with anything else. And double check the timing because that would explain a backfire and failure to start.

Handle on pull cord came off and cord went inside,

pull spark plug then pull cord see if fluid comrs out.if so check oil level,if over full see if it smells like gas if so you have a bad float in carb or dirt stuck in needle and seat in carb if all is good could have sheered flywheel key or if over head valve engine(has valve cover) valves may need to be adj or compression release mechanism in side engine broke. todays engines have very high compression and will not turn over without release. hupe this helpl

My model TB46599, less than 1 year old, has no

Absolutely. What sometimes happens is that carbon will build up on the cylinder head. Then when you try and start it you get a mini backfire and it knocks the carbon loose. The carbon get mashed under one of the valves and then you end up with no compression.

Here are a couple of things you can do to try and loosen it up. (Mind you that you will have to change oil after this and probably need a new spark plug.)

1. In a well ventilated area... preferrably outside and off the grass or any vegitation area, remove the spark plug and turn the engine until the piston is all the way to the top. (TURN OFF THE FUEL SELECTOR)
2. Then dump about 3 cap fulls of oit into the cylinder head via spark plug hole. (Cap from 1 qt small mouth oil bottle)
3. Pull starter cord slowly 2 times.
4. Fill the cylinder all the way to the top of the cylinder head / spark plug hole. Keep it full for about 10 minutes. Add more gas if you have to. The goal here is to soak the overhead valve seat with raw gas for a bit.
5. After 10 minutes... YANK the starter cord with ign off knowing full well your going to make a mess.
6. Add Fresh gas to cyl head (not full this time) and YANK the cord again.
7. Keep pulling cord until vapor / gas cloud stops exiting spark plug hole.
8. Install spark plug and check compression.
Good compression... Good deal.. CHANGE THE OIL because it leaked past the pistions rings during the soaking process.

Still no compression the head will have to be removed and the vavle seats hand lapped with grinding compound.

NOTE: Before turning on the ignition switch... and attempting an engine start make sure that the unit is not soaked in gas i.e do a good clean up job.

Safety First!

Thanks for using FixYa.

Pull cord difficult to pull..removed from saw it works fine..with spark plug installed hard to pull ..with plug removed (of course there is no compression) ,the pull cord pulls easily..saw worked greatall...

Make sure someone hasn't run this saw without the oil in the fuel mixture. It is possible it is dry and some galling is happening. Or - if this saw is equipped with a compression bleeder (for easier starting), this could be not functioning and you're pulling through the normal compression (which can be a bit feisty!). Check for misalignment of some type having to do with the pull starter - check that the cord spool isn't rubbing on the housing when you pull. Good luck.

common causes for backfires is-- lean misfire due to low fuel pressure or resticted fuel injectors, breakdown of secondary including internal ignition coil arching, and a dead spot in tps sensor.
