Question about Yamaha HTR-5230 Receiver
The best connection is to connect your sub to the output connector (subwoofer) of your HTR. it should have one. But you can also connect parallel to the speakers, any of right or left speakers or both. i normally connect to the speaker set B if thorugh the speaker connections.

I have the same tuner.on the back you will see all connectors bottom row of rca jacks you will see subwoffer if your sub has to rca. red/white use a splitter monstor cable gold ..works best. i use Home Theater Reserch speakers... you can also plug your subs power plug into the tuner snd you never have to power it on seprate .........
