1 Answer

Ice forms in on the back panel in the freezer; freezer stays cold but frig not as cold; we defrosted it, took everything out of the freezer and relocated so as to keep items away from fan. Plugged it back in, and the same thing happens. What part do I need.

Make sure that when you have removed the ice you also cleaned out the unit especially the freezer and the drains. Clogging due to dirt is sometimes the cause of coils to freeze up. I would advise to have the thermistor checked. I am unsure if your unit has auto defrosting capabilities, if it has you may want to have the circuit checked out.

If the freezer is staying cold it sounds like a defrost system problem. A bad timer, heater or thermostat can cause frost to build up on the coils and block air flow to the refrig side. Check out ACMEHowTo.com for troubleshooting the defroster problem.
There is a small duct between the freezer and refrigerator side if this is blocked the frig side won't cool.

Usually when the freezer is still giving cold but the frig is not receiving cold you have an ice build-up on the cold (evaporator) coil that is hidden behind the rear panel of the freezer compartment. If you push on this panel, you usually will hear a cruntch sound (this tells you there is ice/frost on the coil). There are 3 components that affect this problem: defrost timer, defrost stat, defrost heat coil. In other words, something is not working to remove the frost from the coil and it is building-up day after day (takes about 5-7 days to become full (blocked). When this happens, no air can move over the coil to take the cold away and blow it throughout the frig or freezer compartments.
To access the defrost coil or stat, you have to ren move the back panel (in the freezer) and remove all the ice with a hair dryer only or let the door open all day and allow it to melt. DO NOT PUSH OR PRY OR CHOP WITH ANY TOOL OR YOU WILL BE GARRANTEED TO PUNCTURE A HOLE IN THE COIL AND YOU ARE REALLY SCREWED. The time is either: under the front of the whole refrigerator, or in the frig compartment (towards the back or attached to the ceiling of frig compartment). If you have some experience with electrical parts, you can test to see which part is at fault. Good Luck. Macgivor

Only the freezer side is working

I don't think the darkness is related to the fridge not being cool. The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp
OR
..
If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

Either your defrost timer, defrost heater or defrost thermostat has failed. All parts are located behind the lower back panel inside the freezer. Most likely are the defrost heater and defrost thermostat.

GE GSS25WGMCC, Ice Forming On Freezer Interior Surfaces

i had the same problem and i replaced the defrost heater and it worked fine for about one month but now having the same issue. Most of the time from what I have heard it is the defrost heater (about $60 part). I might have another issue going on with mine like a defrost thermostat. Your defrost heater is right under the panel on the inside of the freezer section. remove white panel on back side of freezer section and remove two screws and two wires and replace it and you should be fine.

while you have the freezer panel out look at the defrost heaters to see if they are burnt up, there may be 2 heaters on a GE they look like glass tubes with a spring running through them on e at the very bottom and another about halfway up. a good heater will be faily clear a bad heater will look greyish and burnt on the inside. this is most common issue for ge defrost problems. if both heaters look ok. need to check the defrost sensor its mounted to the top of the coil it will have an orange and I think brown wire going to it it is a round disc looking piece. not sure if you have a multimeter if you do check it on ohms and yo should read infinity as long as the sensor is still frozen.
now if both of those check good then only thing left is bad defrost control which means replacing the motherboard loated on the back of your refrig.
shoot me a message if you have anymore questions.. thx peyton

Is your fan blowing in the freezer? Frost on the back wall of the freezer usually indicates a defrost problem... defrost themostate, heaters, take back panel off and check evap for frost build up and if your fan in working.
