I hate to say this but it sounds like a dead optical sensor in your camera. Just make sure to at least try to prove me wrong by making sure that your display isn't just shut off or that your lens is not being covered by something. :P

I can't help but defer you to Canon on this one. Contact them as soon as possible to get repairs set up. Your camera should still be under warranty as I don't believe this model has been out quite a full year yet.

I found Canon surprisingly easy to deal with compared to most companies. They do repairs on the camera. Apparently they don't replace them... (I called recently involving an issue on my own S3.) She informed me that repairs were to take an expected 10-14 days to get it back to you. But they were friendly enough to nearly make me barf. LOL.

Here is their contact info:

Lens screen blank

Hi,

The black screen problem means the lens sensor is spoiled due to over exposure to heat. Its better to give it to cannon service centre. If your camera is under warranty period its well and good they will replace the lens sensor for free of cost.

Thank you

Blank screen on Canon Powershot S2is camera

hi.if you are telling both viewfinder and lcd are blank or black the problem is in the shutter that you found inside of the lens are not open.sometimes the cuase of the is humidity or moist goin inside of the shutter thats why it will not work properly or stuck up.if you can open your camera and adjust the shuuter from lens unit its better .but if not its better you bring to service center and request for adjustment.

by the way try also to reset your camera to default setting maybe it will help you.

thank you

Hi Greg, Its not on the settings., Here the thing you need to Do

Turn Off the camera, remove the memory card then Turn On the camera and go to auto mode or smart scene., now if yu see black screen check the Lens is yur lens has cover or check if the Lens protracted. Now if the Lens has no cover and protracted thats good it means theres no problem on the lens., Now press Menu Button, If the options did not display it means LCD or screen is already defective. you can also press review button.,

When I turn on my camera the screen is blank

Do the icons show up on the screen or is it totally blank?
Can you view previous pictures?
If the icons show on the screen then have a look into the lens to see if the shutter is closed over the inner lens. you may have to adjust the zoom to bring the inner lens and shutter mechanism up close to the outer lens to get a better look.
If the shutter is covering the inner lens then it is stuck and will need to be freed by opening the camera up.
If the screen is just black then it just may be possible that the ribbon for the screen has partially slipped out of it's socket on the main board.
If it comes out all the way then the camera should not even power up.

LCD screen is blank and pictures are also blank

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open).

To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help.

Hi, My V570 works fine on widescreen lens (the default on startup) but when I zoom up to switch to the other lens it goes to a dark blank screen and will take a similarly dark blank picture. I can hear the zoom activating as I click it so I think that is ok. I opened the camera

The shutter in the lens is stuck closed. You need to take the camera to a shop where they will replace the lens assembly.
