Question about Gateway GTW-P42M303 42 in. Plasma Television

Gateway GTW-P42M203, tv inputs as well as

Gateway GTW-P42M203,(not 303) tv inputs as well as component inputs all display a full screen scrambled picture. Audio is fine. On screen menu looks fine. I connected a laptop to the RGB input and it looks beautiful. I've removed the back and have noticed a few swollen capacitors on the Main Power Assy. board at locations C8099, C8100, C8101. I see no burnt connectors and haven't searched for any bad solder joints. Would those caps cause that problem? Strange that RGB input looks just fine.

Thanks for any help. Awesome site.

I had the same exact problem except I only had two swollen capacitors (c8099, c8100). I replaced both and now I have a picture with the other video inputs but it is shaky. Small words like are in the credits are almost unreadable. One of the capacitors that I replaced didn't get pulled all the way tight against the board since the old solder kept getting hard and I was afraid that I was going to get the board to hot. Could that have an effect like that? Should I replace c8101 even though it doesn't look bad?

Hi

Yes you are right, this issue can be because of swollen capacitors. Also check for bad solder joints. It seems that you have electrical expertise and know how to solder/desolder components so that should not be a tough job for you. Usually the issue is there because of cold solder joints/swollen capacitors.

Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.

Thanks
Rylee

hello. The problem you are having has haunted Gateway ever since they went into the television business. Here is a link to an article about the issue. http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20051214/0211209.shtml

Getting back to your set, I would definitely not put one penny into a repair. Instead, cut your losses and upgrade to digital, right now the prices are shockingly low. good luck with it.

GTW-P42M203 shut off and will not stay on

Chances are there are cracked solder on one of the boards. This is a common problem with Gateways. If you're handy with soldering then this is an easy fix.

I have over 10 years experience in electronic tech support.

I know this isn't what you want to hear, but the problem you've described can't be fixed with troubleshooting. Your TV will have to be repaired. There is a part that has developed a defect and needs to be replaced. The question will be, is the part still available? Before paying a TV repair person $75+ to diagnose the problem, ask yourself if you're willing to pay $250 minimum to fix this particular set. Also keep in mind that most TVs that old have a very limited number of replacement parts still available. Normally it will cost at least $75 to have the set looked at by a repair shop (diagnostics). If the part needed to complete the repair isn't available, you won't get that money back.

I hope I've provided you useful assistance and that this information allows you to make an informed decision as to how to proceed from here.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.
