Question about Kidde Nighthawk Combo Gas/co Detector

1 Answer

We have a combination carbon monoxide/gas alarm and the gas alarm went off. We are having a girls party and it is in the basement and they are using nail polish and nail polish remover, some of it spilled and it smells pretty strong. Could that be making it go off? I opened the windw now to air it out. the measurement said 216 and another time 217. Thanks

This is normal your detector is sensing particles in the air.
Also You should never buy a duel detector. Because if one becomes
defective you loose protection from both detectors. It is recommended
to use two separate detectors, because different detectors are installed at different heights in the house. Not all gases are the same weight.
Also carbon or gas detectors should be replaced every five years. and smoke detectors every 10 years.

What makes a ventless gas heater put out carbon monoxide fumes

Any gas appliance that burns gas puts out Carbon Monoxide. The trick is to make it not too much, however, how much is too much. Read this;

http://www.ventfree.org/content/view/42/18/

and there are warnings here too;

https://www.angieslist.com/articles/are-ventless-fireplaces-safe.htm

and a list of the potentially dangerous gases they omit;

https://www.abe.iastate.edu/extension-and-outreach/carbon-monoxide-poisoning-unvented-gas-space-heating-appliances-aen-204/

I would not use one unless I had good ventilatioon and a better Carbon Monoxide alarm.

Are there any reported problems with the Firez 21007624 carbon monoxide detector false alarms?

I do not know of any reported problems specific to the Kidde CO/smoke alarm, but I spent a significant part of my career servicing toxic gas sensors and can give you some general advice:

1- Most important: treat an alarm as a REAL alarm and DO NOT suspect that your alarm is a "false alarm". My experience has been that most "false alarms" ARE REAL and the source needs to be identified! With Carbon Monoxide detectors, it is usually a blocked vent for a gas fired appliance- a hot water heater, furnace, or oven. Call your fire department or a service professional to make sure that there is no carbon monoxide. They have portable detectors that will be able to double check your alarm.

My advice to you at this moment is to act as if you have a real alarm condition and do not place you or others in a life threatening situation. Ventilate the room/ apartment/house IMMEDIATELY!

I will post more after I send this because you may be in a life threatening situation!

When I worked Electrical in a Hardware store we were told by Nighthawk and f\First Alert and we told our customers that you want the detectors 4-6 feet off the floor never near a water heater or furnace since this can cause false alarms. The CO will rise, so one on each floor should be enough near a central stair if possible. Other wise make sure at least one is in the bedroom.

When a carbon monoxide detector sends an alarm, there is cause for concern. You mentioned that the other CO detector did not go off, but maybe it is too far away to monitor the carbon monoxide levels that was in this area.

The instructions in your manual would direct you to evacuate the house immediately and ventilate. Your next step is to get a professional to inspect what may have caused the carbon monoxide leak.

A reading of 19 indicates that there is carbon monoxide in that area of your house, unless your CO detector is not working properly. Your local fire department will give you the best advice for what action to take when a carbon monoxide detector sends an alarm.

Be safe, don't assume a carbon monoxide alarm is cause by a defective CO detector, have it inspected.

My nighthawk carbon monoxide alaram is keep biping

Check your user manual for issues dealing with beeping alarms.

Your local fire department may be able to help educate you on the proper installation and use of Carbon Monoxide Detectors. A CO detector alarm should be taken seriously and you should follow the manufacturer procedures included in the package.

NEVER dismiss a Carbon Monoxide Detector Alarm for a malfunction.
ALWAYS treat an alarm as an emergency and follow manufacturer procedures.

Check our website for more industry information or for buying replacement Carbon Monoxide Detectors.

Periodically emits 3 loud beeps. Displays 888.

The CO detectors require replacement of the battery periodically.

Unlike smoke detectors, the detector element itself also requires replacement as well as the battery and is sold as a module with the battery attached.

Carbon monoxide is on

When a Carbon Monoxide Detector alarm goes off, you should follow the procedures that came with the manufacturer manual. Even when the alarm sounds, you cannot smell, taste, or see this dangerous silent killer known as Carbon Monoxide.

Have your house checked by your local fire department for possible levels of CO gas readings. If this all checks out, you can go online to Kidde Nighthawk website and find the manual for your Carbon Monoxide detector model.

Hopefully, you found your solution since you posted this question back in Dec, 2008. Go to my website to read industry information and to view most Brands and Models of Carbon Monoxide Detectors.
