Question about RCA HD56W66 56" HDTV

5 Answers

Screen distortion The sides and the top/bottom of the screen are bowed inward. There is also a blue, red, and a green line at the top of the screen that is bowed inward as well. I would like to try to fix it myself if possible. I don't have a way to get it to a repair shop and really can't afford to have it fixed. The warranty just ended on it as well. Any help would be appreciated.

I did remove all of the magnetic things away from my tv. I also tried demagnetizing it which did nothing. I've also had people say that it may be the picture tube? Do you know about how much it should cost to fix?

  • mwhite0120 Dec 08, 2007

Would replacing the picture tube all together repair the color pixels problem that I am having. My picture tube is still under warranty. Parts and labor are not under warranty. I need the cheapest way to repair this tv. Thanks for your help.

You would have to check around to find out who does warranty repairs
in your area.Prices are not standard all over the country RCA service people
are scarce in some areas of the country. Some service people serve up 3
states (dispatched by phone no service facility) I am not affiliated with
RCA an any way, only a representative of RCA can give an accurate
estimate of time and materials. You might try selling or trading it for
a smaller TV at a small mom & pop type TV repair (They may
have a good picture tube bad chassis customer dont return situation)
They infrom me I need a rating

Its due to your screen colour pixels problem! mostly its done due to the presense of magnetic things around the TV. But as far as i know you cannot repair by your own! it needs some expertise*

Yea if your picture tube is faulty then it needs to be replaced Cost i cannot say directly because each region have different prices! But the last way to get it repaired is to buy NEW Picture tube! thats it it will cost around 25-30% of your total TV price!

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Projection sets have two very common problems outlined below.

The first common problem is convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. The TV can also shut down when the convergence starts to fail.

Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith, RCA and others.

You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from TV Repair Kits using the link at the end of this article.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped or bowed
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

Tv is messed up

I got a question.

Do you have any stereo speakers anywhere near your television?

This sounds like something a magnetic field could cause from speakers being too close to the tv.

If so try to relocate them and see if the problem goes away.

convergence is the problem. first question do you have convergence in the customer setup menu. if you do not it could be a special small fuse if you do have "convergence" in the setup menu then you most likely have a convergence power board issue. and generally they are replaced. in our shop such board replacement average 124 labor and about 100 for part. if the fuse bout 15 for part and 80 for labor. there are solder connection that cause the blown fuse
