Question about Compaq Computers & Internet

1 Answer

Transfer files from old laptop to new.

I'm on two laptops right now.( the old one on-line) My old Compaq V2000 and my new Compaq 6910. I am trying to transfer files (using a USB cable) from one puter to the other, using the wizzards and following the instructions. Old laptop can not find new laptop, new laptop cant find the old one.
Any suggestions ? Do I need a special Transfer Cable, or would a USB patch cable do ?

I hooked up an ethernet cable between the two, restarted both laptops and started over in the wizards for both. No result. Tried again with ethernet cable AND USB patch cable, re-started both puters, followed the wizard. No go. The 2 puters dont see each other.
The 2006 V2000 has the Transfer Wizard installed, so does the 2009 Compaq 6910.
I have tried through the wizard and thru My Computer. In My Computer it does not even show an alternate hook-up. Restarting the puter did not help.

Are we still tuned in ? I hooked up an ethernet cable between the two. No result.
Also added the USB cable, no result. Restarted both puters, no result.
Even In My Computer it does not show an extra hook-up.

USB transfer cables are quite special and not a regular USB cable.

A better (and cheaper) option is if both have network ports (Ethernet)

Then use a crossover cable. This is usually much much faster than USB and also more reliable.

Enable file and printer sharing on both computers.
Also make sure they both share the same work-group common examples are MSHOME or WORKGROUP

Once that is done you have a few options.

The better option is to use file and settings transfer wizard or similar built into windows. This will step you through the process and allow you to carry over your email and address book plus all your documents.

Another is to use copy and paste to pick the items you want and move them directly to where you want them (his does not work as well as the FST option but is quick just for documents etc.

Dont try to copy programs as they don't transfer well for the most part.

If usb is your only option then be very aware that USB 1.0 to any USBwill be extremly slow and even subject to failure. USB 2.0 to USB 2.0 is the only reccomended usb transfer method

Have just bought a new laptop/notebook and want to download the user manual for this product

Their are a number of ways.
1. Link them via a WIFI router, share the old laptops data files folders and copy them to the new laptop.

2. Programs you cannot transfer, you need to re-install them in the new laptop.

3. Put the data files on USB memory stick and load them into new laptop. Most sticks will do Gigabytes more than a DVD will hold.

4. As above with a LAN connection, share the files and make sure both computers are seen in the same workgroup (see file explorer to make sure they are).

Just got new HP laptop and i'd like to transfer photo's and some files from my old HP desk top computer. What do I need to do this?

If the old computer still works, see the following. Otherwise look for the * for a solution further below. If the old desktop has Windows XP SP3 or newer, you can use the easy transfer wizard. It is included in Windows 7.

If the old desktop has a network connection, you can use an ethernet switch to create a network to share files. Once both computers recognize the switch, set up a network. If you have Windows 7 on one computer and do not have it on the other, do not use the Homegroup network. This may come up automatically; otherwise, use the Network Control Panel and add a network. Start the Easy Transfer Wizard and set this computer as the new computer. There may be an option to get the Transfer Wizard to copy and install to the old computer. Note the code for the Easy Transfer Wizard. Then install the Windows Easy Transfer Wizard on the old computer and launch it. Set this computer as the old computer. Use the code given in on the first computer to synch the transfer. Go through the settings to select the files to transfer and then start the transfer. Prepare to wait a while for the transfer.

If you can't use the Easy Transfer Wizard, set the hard drive on one computer to Share (click Computer (My Computer) and right click on the hard drive and select Properties. Then choose the Sharing tab. Enable Sharing by clicking the Share button.) On the other computer, map to a network drive and locate the Shared drive. Drag and drop the files to the new computer.

If you already have a network connection to a cable or DSL router, you will be asked about "New network found" and to define it. Make sure to make it the home network on both computers. (If you were directly connected to a cable or DSL modem, then you will again get this question. Note the switch will not let your computers talk to the outside network without a router though.)

(Alternatively, use a cross-over ethernet cable with the direct cable networking option.)

Other options: use the Microsoft Easy Transfer Wizard to put the photos and files on a DVD, external hard drive or flash drive with sufficient capacity. You may need to download and install this program to the old computer. For the optical drive option, you need a DVD-RW drive on the desktop and a DVD reader (minimum) on the laptop. (You can use an external optical drive, if you have one.) Another option is a USB file transfer device. Some of these come with the Easy Transfer Wizard on their install disc.

*If the old computer will not turn on, take the hard drive out of the computer and use a USB to IDE/SATA adapter. Follow the directions for the device and attach it to a USB port on the laptop. See if the drive mounts (is listed when you open the Computer File Explorer). Then drag and drop the files from one drive to another.

Note you may need to change the owner of the files on the new computer. (This doesn't apply with the Easy Transfer Wizard if the old user is made equivalent to the new user in the setup of the wizard.) To change the owner, right click on the file in the File Explorer and choose the Security tab. Select the Advanced settings.

I hope this helps.

I want to transfer data from old laptop to new laptop

Hello,

Are you gonna transfer just a few files or ALL files? If you have a home network, you can do it by connecting the 2 laptops via the network and share the files from the old laptop.

OR

You can just use a usb memory storage device (usb stick/usb pen etc..) to transfer the files.

Hi,
You can transfer the data files only from the old laptop to the new one. You cannot transfer the installed applications/software. Software are required to installed again on the new laptop afresh.
To transfer the data you can use external portable hard disk, which can be connected to the PC using any USB port (just like pen drive) and you can copy - paste the required data to the external disk just like you copy data from one partition to another. After copying the required data, you can connect the external drive to new laptop and copy the data to the new laptop. You can use external drive of any brand/ capacity. However, it is better to have an external drive with larger capacity, so that you can transfer the data in one go.

Hope it helps! Good Luck! Thanks for using Fixya!

Data transfer

What I suggest you do is use the file transfer wizaed that is built n in WinXP OS's. From you old Dell go to start>Accs>System tools> file and Transfer wizard.....follow the prompts and save the file to your desktop. After the coolection and creation of the UMT2 folder copy it to a flash drive or use a cross cable between your old and new laptop and share the folder in th network s you can access it directly from your new laptop. Copy he whole folder to the desktop of your new Laptop. Run the same wizard on your new laptop.
