When you press start on my dryer is is making a humming noise but will not come on

On the info provided, it may be the drum belt has broken and the motor is not able to turn the drum. The humming you hear is most likely the motor turning as it should, but due to the broken belt, the motor is not able to turn the drum.

I have a Kenmore 66512690 dryer , when i press the start button, I just get a buzz like it wants to go but it does not. Could this be the motor?

Based on the limited details the motor is either humming instead of starting and running or the motor is running but the drum is not turning.

This symptom could indicate:

  • Broken belt if it's blowing air out the exhaust.
  • Faulty motor
  • Jammed drum
  • Loose wiring connection
  • Object or piece of clothing article jamming the blower wheel.
Open the dryer door and see if you can rotate the drum in a counterclockwise (CCW) direction. If it's very difficult to rotate then it could have something to do with the motor or drum glide. If the drum will not turn then something is likely jamming the blower wheel.

I push the start button and the dryer makes a humming sound and the drum doesn't turn nor does the dryer turn on

Humming indicates motor is getting weak. If you look in the back compartment of your dryer you can probably see the belt. You can relieve the belt tension and then take the belt off the motor pulley. Once you do this, make sure the belt is out of the way and push the start button. If the motor turns it means it couldn't push the weight and is too weak to run. It make not turn without the belt on it either but you will hear if the sound is coming from the motor. In either case you need a new dryer or new motor if the dryer is pretty new.

I have an older whirlpool dryer when you turn it on it hums but doesn't spin.

Three possibles here:

1) The motor is running but the belt is broken not allowing the drum to turn.

Try to turn the drum by hand and see if it rotates very freely and takes a while to stop. if so, your belt is broken. If it feels like there is a good deal of resistance on the drum and stops as soon as you let go, your belt is functional.

2) Something is stuck (probably in the blower wheel) not allowing the motor to start up. If as you attempted to rotate the drum in #1 above it did not turn at all, this and #3 below are possible.

You'll need to disassemble the unit to get to the blower wheel and verify it's clear.

3) Motor is bad (common with older well used dryers) and needs to be replaced. This may also cause the drum to be locked as above.

That's all I can think of that will cause the motor humming but not having the drum to spin.

Heats but wont spin

Can you hear the motor running when it is supposed to? If so, the belt has either broken, the belt tensioner spring has broken or come off, or the belt has come off of the motor pulley. If you hear humming, but no motor running, the motor start capacitor is likely bad and should be replaced.

Our Maytag gas dryer drum doesn't turn. Replaced belt. Heats up but drum isn't turning

There are three possible reasons why the drum doesn't turn.
  1. Broken belt. You replaced the so in this case it's not.
  2. Door switch. The dryer will not operate if teh door switch is defective. It is inside the drier main housing near the door frame. You need to raise or open the top or front of the dryer to reach the switch. Replace if defective.
  3. Motor. If the motor hums when the start button is pressed, the motor maybe burned-out. Check the dryer motor:
  • Check the blower fan housing for obstruction and manually turn the motor shaft.
  • If the motor is very stiff or cannot be turned manually, you need to replace the motor.
  • If the motor rotate freely, run the motor without the belt. If it runs fine, there maybe problem with the idler pulley or the clothes drum.
  • Rotate the drum by hand. If it is difficult to rotate it, correct any problem with the rollers or pulley. Reassemble the dryer and try it again.
  • If the motor hums but does not run on it's own even without the belt, but can be turned freely by hand, you need to replace the motor start capacitor or the motor itself.

Dryer turn on but would not spin

When the dryer will not spin the most common cause is a broken dryer belt.

If the dryer motor only hums when you press the Start button, the motor may be burned out. Here's how to test the dryer motor:

  • Remove the belt.

  • Check for obstructions in the blower fan housing.

  • Manually rotate the shaft of the motor.

If the motor is very stiff, or impossible to rotate manually, and the blower fan housing is clear, you need to replace the motor.

If the motor rotates freely, run the motor momentarily with the belt removed and the blower in place. If the motor runs fine with the belt removed, there may be a problem with the idler pulley or the clothes drum. Try to rotate the drum by hand. If it is very difficult to move, correct any problem with the rollers or pulley, and then reassemble the dryer and try it again.

If the motor hums but doesn't rotate on its own even with the belt removed--yet you can turn it freely by hand--you usually need to replace the motor or the motor start capacitor.

Door switch Your dryer can't operate at all if the door switch is defective. It's inside the dryer main housing near the door frame. Sometimes you need to raise or open the top or front of the dryer to reach the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it.

When we push the on button, you can hear a hum,

Sounds like the belt that turns the drum has broken. the hum sound is the motor turning. Does it still get hot in the drum? If so then you need a replacement belt ($15-$25).You can open the rear or the dryer to confirm the belt is broken. Be sure to unplug from the wall outlet to avoid electrical shock.
