Denied Access to the Desktop in Windows XP then take ownership

Logon as Adminstrator and take ownership of the All Users Desktop folder using this method

Home Edition
By default you need to logon with the safe mode to get to the Adminstrator account in the Home Edition however you can add this account to the welcome screen using this reg tweak HERE at my Sky Drive Public.
Microsoft also tells you that you can't access the security tab in Windows XP Home, well you can if you use this simple PATCH download this from my Sky Drive .It can also be done using the Fajo XPSFE tab installer he has a few other goodies up his sleeve check his website HERE for this and much more the file renamer is a great little tool.

Professional Edition
You will need to disable simple file sharing that is tuned on all PC's that are not part of a Network or Domian you don't need to this in the Home Edition its only for the Professional version,Microsoft have there own FIX to do this for you, the Security tab that you need to access is already there all you need to do is click the advanced button shown in red

then select the user to take ownership as shown in the first screendump

Windows\system32\config\system file is missing or corrupt

Step 1:
SP3 is the third and final service pack released for Microsoft Windows XP, and it eliminates many of the security holes that previously affected XP. While Microsoft recommends that users download SP3 using Windows Update, some users are unable to do so. However, it's easy to create a Windows XP SP3 installation CD; it requires only that you download the pack from the website and burn it to a CD-R/DVD-R using an ISO burner program.
Download the SP3 installation ISO by visiting the first link listed in the "Resources" section of this article. Save it to your Desktop. Download ImgBurn and save it to your Desktop. Double-click the installation executable for ImgBurn and click "Next." Follow the remaining onscreen prompts and click "Finish" to complete installation of ImgBurn. Insert a blank CD-R/DVD-R into your DVD drive. Open ImgBurn by going to "Start," "Programs" and "ImgBurn." Click "File," then "Browse for a source file." Navigate to your Desktop and select the SP3 ISO file. Click "Open." Click the blue "ISO to CD" button located on the bottom left of ImgBurn. The program will begin creating the Windows XP SP3 installation CD. This process may take anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes to complete depending on the speed at which the CD-R/DVD-R is being burned. Click "OK" once the CD-R/DVD-R has finished burning. You've successfully created a Windows XP SP3 installation CD. XP PRO SP3 ISO Download the iso also download the imageburn

Missing battery indicator in the task bar

No this is more typical with Windows Vista users as updates can disable the icons from the notification bar.

Chose 'taskbar' tab, then click 'customize' and chose the option for the battery icon and change to 'show' .

If you need anymore help please post back.

I downloaded a software package to my windows XP desktop but, when I try to install I get a pop up stating location Doc. and settings not valid in win32 application. Please advise.

Sounds like the download got corrupted. Try Deleting the current copy and re-downloading. If it still does not work, verify that you have downloaded the 32 bit version of the software if there is a 32 and 64 bit versions available.

Lost items in left side of start menue.

Delete your profile from C:\Users\<your login name> and restart.

Please do a backup of your important files from "My Documents" and 'Desktop" if you have any important files there.

Try Scanning your Computer For Computer Viruses.
then re-install Windows XP.
Your files will remain intact, if you select to leave the hard-drive As it is ( rather Than Format it ) or setup on a different Partition.
Backup your Valuable Docs/Files First.
Windows re-installation will replace any Missing-deleted Corrupt Files.
hope This Helps you.
