I have had a similar problem with my Dell Inspiron (TM) 1501. I also have a blinking A-lock button on the console. I don't know what that button is. It is a lock with an 'A' in it, blinking on and off. My screen is blank still after several restarts. The problem originally seemed to begin with a low battery, which had gotten down to 6 percent. BTW, I noticed that this new Dell with a Vista operating system doesn't seem to hibernate or give and warning when the battery is down. Before it would just all of a sudden die. This time I am unable to restart it after dying.

I have the same problem, same notebook. and it happened exactly a week after my warranty expired. started off with my battery being low. One morning I used it, that afternoon I was about to check my email. and it wouldn't come on. Caps lock just blinks repeatedly when I turn my laptop on

Screen goes blank sometimes when using computer. It needs restart again.

Same problem here too. Sometimes when it went onto screen saver it flashed after moving te mouse to clear the screen saver. Now it is a blank screen but you can faintly see the image (so faint you can't see what it says.) It is not the FN and F8 button as I have tried this ad I am writing this using an external display. I have reloaded vista but problem remains. I don' have any flashing button syndrome though.

My 1501 went into hibernate mode and after restarting several times, I still get a blank screen. I am also unable to get any output on an external monitor. How can I solve this problem? I tried using the fn f8 function but that doesn't work either.

    I have a 3yrs old inspiron E1501 and the
goes black immediately after booting up....except when just using the
battery sometimes with cord. If I plug in the cord, the screen goes
immediately black, yet it is clear the computer is still working. There
have been no hardware changes. The battery only last about 45mins even
when it says the battery is completely charged. , I have been told it could be the
motherboard. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Since then i was abled to get on my computer working without the cord
and i did what somebody suggested was download Bios to my computer it
started working fine i then restarted it and i pressed f8 and did a
diagnostic on it and everything checked out fine... well
two days ago it went out on me again but this time as soon as i turn it
on it flash dell real quick and then it goes black and i noticed that
the number lock turns on as soon as the dell logo flash i tried
pressing f8, f12, still nothing, i don't know if the number lock is
stopping it from going to the screen where i can put it in safe mode. its not even working without the cored now. I was going to take it to the geeksquad but the prices are crazy.

my dell is only 1 year old i.e. from the shop and it just decided to go blank the caps lock is just blinking. I tried discharging the battery but to no avail.
    Could anyone help?

Half the screen on my Inspiron 1501 will intermittently go black. Sometimes instead of going black, it'll just show random vertical lines. Even when the screen is working, one thin vertical line in the middle remains.
It'll stop working without me touching the laptop, and will start working again without me touching anything.
I can still operate the cursor on the black half, I just can't see what I'm doing!

Dell Inspiron 1501, screen goes black after 3-5 min on AC power (with or without the batter installed). Works OK on battery power. Reloaded the Video driver (9.2) that eliminated an ati2mtag 12c return failed error, but it did not solve the black screen after 3-5 minutes. Possible causes, AC adapter is overdriving the computer, the "bright screen" mode of AC power is somehow causing the problem. There are no system errors reported. As an aside, when the screen fails, a compatable external monitor with the same settings (1024 X 768) can be used and works fine when toggled with Fn F8. Suggestions?

Here's how to work around the problem with the screen going blank when the A/C power adapter is attached.

With the battery only connected increase the screen brigtness using the blue Fn (function) key and the up arrow until you start to see the screen flickering. Now use the function key and the down arrow to decrease the screen brightness until the flickering stops. Plug in your A/C adapter and if the screen brigness increases, quickly bring it back down to the level where the screen does not flicker. It should continue run at this reduced brightness level.

You can then go into the the BIOS setup during the boot up sequence by pressing F2 and set this reduced brightness level so that any time you connect the A/C the brightness will automatically be set to the lower setting that avoids the problem.

Definitely its the Ram. I recently tried to upgrade to 1Ghz speed but the ram speed was 800mhz instead of the stock 555 mhz. Dell apparently is not configured to work with this speed. I took 1 of the modules out and used 1 555 mhz speed and 1 800 mhz speed and voila what do you know? It worked, but you must upgrade all system bios to the most up to date before installing any hardware upgrades.

Hello, I had this problem, where the screen went dark. At first it would happen every 20 mins or so and then became so frequent that it would happen every couple of mins. It was so dark I couldnt see what I was doing but the computer was still working because if I pressed ctrl-alt-delete and locked the computer and then logged back on the screen would come back to life. This led me to believe that the LCD wasnt broken, only that it must be something to do with the battery or power setting (as this black screen problem did not happen when using battery power only).
After calling Dell and was informed my guarantee had expired, I had a search on the internet for solutions (not finding any that worked) I have fiddled around until- alas I think I have fixed it!!......

I double clicked on the battery icon in the bottom right corner, then windows mobility center, and turned on the presenting setting (this function is so that if you are giving a presentation, i presume on powerpoint, that the computer doesnt sleep if there is no activity from you). This appears to have stopped the black screen problem! seems very simple, but is working so far. fingers crossed!

If your Dell computer appears to be booting - e.g., the hard drive light flickers after pressing the power on button, etc. - but the screen does not illuminate, i.e, there is no boot text or other signs of life FROM THE SCREEN, you might want to consider:
1) Pressing the power button again to get the unit to power down.
2) After it powers down, unplug the power adapter from the wall and disconnect the power adapter from the computer.
3) Unplug the battery.
4) (Without any power connected to the computer) Press the power on button. (This will of course not start the computer but it will discharge certain capacitors that act like batteries/power supplies within the computer - and allow the memory to be reset to zeros.)
5) Plug in the battery and reconnect power supply.
6) Press the power on / start button. If this does not work you could either try it again (and this time press the power on button two or three times just to more fully ensure that all power is dissipated. . . and wait a few minutes before reconnecting the battery and power supply) or go on to another possible solution.
I have found that Dell is problematic with regard to the power supply and rebooting. Especially if it has gone into the sleep mode a few times.

It's possible you have a button that switches the display off or changes it to output to an external screen.  check along your function keys (F1, F2, etc) and see if there's any logos for a screen on one of those buttons? If so, it's most likely you should hold one of those buttons or push it in conjunction with the FN key down near the spacebar... this is just a guess, but it's how my IBM laptop does things.

My 1501 had similar problem. I attached the VGA port to a projector and the problem was "cured." Now the problem only re-occurs when the laptop has been off for a few hours. I suspect humidity may be an issue.

This is a problem with the ram. Problems with ram will cause it to beep every second. Check the ram if you just changed it. Take it out and reseat it

Laptop monitor went black with no warning. Computer seems to still be working, but I can't see anything on the screen. I tried restarting and it didn't help. I'm assuming it's a hardware issue.

The problem you are facing is of a power scheme setting which is configured to go blank after a certain time of inactivity - You can change the power scheme option from your control panel power option icon and make it more timing or choose option never - please tell me the exact operating system you are using so that I can tell you what to do ?

Try to remove the battery and unplug the power supply, then hold down the power button for about 10 seconds. If this doesn't work, it could be that the laptop overheated while watching the DVD.

Dell 1501 inspiron laptop blank screen

Have you installed any application/program prior to the blue screen? Most blue screen causes your system not to boot to your operating system anymore. It is possible that your hard drive is crashed due to a virus infections or spywares. Incompatibility and corrupted system registry may affect your system to have blue screen as well.

You may try the following steps below.

1. Restart your computer. After you pressed the power button to restart. Keep on tapping F8 key on the keyboard on and off.

2. Boot advanced option will show up on the screen. You may boot your computer to the following option.

a. Last known good configuration
b. Safe mode with Networking.

If Safe mode w/networking works, restore your computer to an earlier using the system restore features.

Keep me posted.
