When pressing the start button on CPU unit, it seems like contact is not being made -- by holding button in long enough it does work but it never worked that way before. Is switch kaput?

Does it go into shut down when you push the switch when running? If it does the switch is okay. If not pull up the control panel menu and work your way through, performance options to power options. Select the advanced option and make sure for power buttons you have selected any of the options except "do nothing".

Most probably the connectors on the switch has gone bad. Quite a common problem for:

a)excessive usage of the switch
b)cheap build quality cpu towers.

since its a Dell, and if you are under warranty, try and get it replaced. It is a hardware problem with your cpu tower's switch, so do not settle down for solutions provided over the phone. An engineer should come and have a look at it, or you should send it off to DELL to get it replaced.

That is one sign that it's failing. Don't keep doing that or you can short out the power supply as well. You can get a refurbished replacement from Dell for about $10.00, and if you're at all technically adept you can replace it yourself. See the Dell support site for instructions to remove the front bezel.
You might have your power supply checked by a local tech, to make sure it's still sound. It could be on it's way out.
On my 2300, both went out, and I think I may have caused the power supply failure by jiggling the start button to get it to power on. Either that or the power supply was failing and me trying to start it shorted out the switch. In any event, I had to replace both...

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take just a moment to rate this post....thanks!

Cpu not powering up

sometimes the front bessel of the case comes loose a little and doesn't allow enough contact for the button to work. check there are no gaps around the front panel piece of your PC. after that there are 5 other things that could be wrong. bad motherboard, bad CPU, short in cable on motherboard, Try holding down power button for 10 seconds and see if that helps.. you might have to do it twice. you could need a new motherboard kit.

HP Photosmart PremiumC 309g-m started a day ago will not print anything even test page. Message says load paper into photo tray. Nothing obvious seems to work, shutting down printer and restarting,...

Unplug the power from the printer.
Press the # key and the 6 at the same time and hold them down
connect the power while continuing to hold down these keys
wait for a message about a semi-nvm reset or something like that to appear on the screen, and then release the buttons. If the unit shuts down while you are pressing the buttons, release them, and press power just long enough to turn the unit on.

If the printer does not react normally after this, post a reply here.

When the console is turned on there is a red blinking light around the power button

How many red lights?

If it's a full circle, then that means it is the dreaded red ring of death. This means that your console's hardware has had a fatal error and will not work. If your still under warranty, contact Microsoft and they will fix it for you.

For future information, this red ring of death is a very common problem with the 360. This is why; Microsoft made a mistake in the design and basically surrounded the entire internal organs of the systems with an aluminum shell, making overheating a real issue. When your system overheats, the sauter (SP?) holding your CPU (The Central Processing Unit, the thing that basically tells your system what to do) has softens, and your CPU begins to rise. Sometimes this will cause a single red light, which means an overheat. When this happens enough, or if the system gets hot enough, then the CPU will actually lift itself from the connection almost completely, meaning that the CPU is no longer connected. There is no way to fix this without Voiding your warranty, so you have to contact microsoft for them to fix/replace the system.
