For safety reasons must I replace the door of my Sharp R-1490 above range microwave when there is a crack that is on the front panel of the door that is 3" in length and runs from the bottom left of the frame panel to the corner of the visible glass window of the microwave door? The cost online for a door appears to be about $150 with shipping. An installed over the range microwave would with installation would probably run me $300-400. The microwave was made in 1999. What are your thoughts and things I should consider on this matter?

I advice you to take it to a repair centre. There should not be a micro wave leak after replacement. leak is harmful !

The microwave oven is not safe to use, the fire has compromised the interior of the oven, if you run the microwave it will start to arc and eventually short out the magnetron, because the white enamel paint has been burned away. If you have holes in the ceiling there is danger of radiation leakage, for safety reasons the oven should be replaced.

This is happening due to either the magnetron, or the Power Diode, or both, is breaking down, under load, then the unit detects the fault condition, & then, for safety reasons, to avoid a fire or explosion, shuts down the system. You need to take it in to be looked at please obtain a "Quote" before proceeding with any work. This way you can decide to repair or replace.

Front doors are attached inside the microwave at the top and bottom of the oven cavity. Top case has to come off using, likely, security torx screw drivers.
Remove the top hinge.
Remove the bottom hinge.
Door falls off.
Replace the front panel of the door.
Reinsert the lower hinge with the door, close and latch the door.
Holding the door firmly to the microwave, tighten the door hinge. Replace the top hinge.
(On some units, both hinges need to be installed at the same time. Use masking tape to hold the lower hinge - makes it easier.)

Here's a link to the instructions for mounting the unit on the wall. Take a look at the section that shows 2 arms protruding out into the microwave where the microwave is secured by a bolt. Have you removed these bolts? If so, the microwave should pull out. Here's the link to the guide:

Hi. I would suggest checking out the door switches. There are usually 3. If one of those has failed then the microwave won't operate because of safety reasons. Best to replace all three. If the display on the unit is still fully operational I'd say go for the repair.

Obviously there was a serious short circuit in this unit which is not normally serviceable by anyone but a factory technician. Since this would not be cost effective, I suggest you replace the oven. New ovens are quite reasonable and have many great features.

Is it making a louder than usual; buzz or hum when you try to cook?

If so, I would suspect a shorted high voltage diode ore a bad magnetron.

The latch head (the assembly with the hook-like parts sticking out) also has a spring which secures it to the inner door panel. The inner door panel or latch head has a broken spring mount. To repair this, the door panels will have to be separated.
