Use the remote, find Closed Captioning and turn it off. It is in Text Mode which is not used in most areas.

we had a problem with "closed captions" showing the other day.. so this makes sense that it is related. so how do you turn this off? since we never turned it on I can't find anywhere to do this.

With Bell ExpressVu you need to make the changes using the satellite remote, not the TV remote.
Worked for me, anyway.

Zenith TV has a big black box in the middle of the screen.

After reading other postings, we figured out that it was the caption box, went to menu and turned it off.
Thanks for the great site, we wouldn't have figured it out without it !

Good Day,
With black box, get the TV's remote and turn OFF the "closed caption". You are in the text of your cc. Good Luck, big IRISH.

Big black box in the middle of the screen

The black box is there because your closed captioning is on and set to text mode. Some channels send the signal even when there is no actual text to display. You can get rid of it by either turning off closed captioning or changing it to CC1 or CC2 mode instead of text. If you can't find those settings, then restore factory settings as directed in your user manual.

Tv Has Big Black Box

shut off close caption. use the CC button onthe remote or go in to the menu and change close caption to CC1. this box is the close caption in TEXT(1,2) which will put on a black box whenever there is caption present.

Line accross top of the screen with flashing black and white boxes

Thin white dashes on top of screen is PERFECTLY NORMAL. It is nothing wrong with the TV, it is the broadcast. What you are seeing is the very bottom of the timecode running. It doesn't happen all of the time or all channels. It usually happens with old 4:3 commercials predating "Digital TV." This is mentioned in your Users Manual. You should be able to adjust the horizontal/vertical position in the menu settings.
