It is a brand new cd. When the laptop powers on it says DEll and bar goes across the screen. then black. then windows xp comes on and a bar goes across the screen too. then a blue screen that says setup is being restarted. after that: black screen then, it goes to another blue screen with 5 check points to the left of the screen.
    1 collecting info
    2 dynamic update
    3 preparing insulation
    4 installing windows
    5 finalizing instillation.
it stops at #4 and a screen pops up to insert CD and hit OK. when i do the progress bar starts moving and then after a few minits it starts all over again from the windows XP opening screen. I have tried to remove the disc and shut down and it keeps going back to the same thing. I cant do anything on the laptop except power it off on and on. please help

The setup program is stuck.

The two most common causes at the 39 min mark are
1 It's having an unresolvable problem with a device.
Disconnect everything that is not needed to setup windows. ie. USB gadgets, printers, scanners, extra monitors, network cards, TV cards,- whatever.

2 the install fines cannot be read because the CD/DVD or the reader is defective.
This sometimes generates an error but not always.
Try cleaning the CD. It's a long shot - but sometimes works.
When the install gets stuck, just remove the CD & give is a wipe or wash,

If you have another PC, try to clone the Windows install CD. NERO, Anydvd or any good burning software will do the job.

If none of this works, all is not lost.
There are several other ways to coax an install into behaving, but first see how all the suggestions you have so far work. from me & the others.

Keep the setup running and when the setup does not seems to proceed eject the cd take out the cd and then insert it again wait for a while and if the installation process resumes and get past 39min than problem solved if not then you will have to install from a different CD or just clean your CD.
don't forget to vote if i solve your problem.

This is most probably due to damaged segments on the OS disk..If you are speaking about software installation on XP , provide details

Some laptops come with made for vista BIOS .. At the product page does DELL provide drivers only for vista. then it is more likely that bios creates problems with installation.. I had same problems on CQ40 144TU(Compaq) and finally I ended up installing Windows7 to it.
If there is some option like Legacy OS support = ON, please make it off..
"brand new" - It's ok doesn't mean that there should be no corrupt segments.
Is it a genuine disk ? - If not try downloading Ghost XP(DOESN'T FOLLOW STANDARD INSTALLATION) installs in less thank 4 minutes.
If you manually burned a disc, try burning again at speed of 4X.

How do you reset a lost windows XP administrator password?

This tutorial will only work in windows xp.

On start up (before Windows loads),Immediately press F8 simultaneously.Click on "Safe Mode".When you are asked to log in, log in to "Administrator" (shouldn't have a password).Go to "Control Panel" by clicking on the START button.Go to "User Accounts".

Look for the account and either delete the password or change it.
step 2:
insert xp cd and boot ur system in bootable xp cd
then go to second repair option .After system restart 39 min remaining At the press shift f10 .At the prompt, type NUSRMGR.CPL and press Enter. Voila! You have just gained graphical access to your User Accounts in the Control Panel, change the password and run the repair setup. Now your administrator password changed

Follow the steps below to quickly find the administrator password on your computer!

1. Try leaving the password blank. More often than not, the Administrator password doesn't exist at all! Just press Enter without typing anything when asked for it.
2. Enter the password to your account. Often times, depending on how Windows XP was setup on your computer, the primary user account will also be the administrator user account.
3. Recover Windows XP administrator password using Windows Password Key. Windows Password key is a program reset any Windows password without reinstalling the OS.
4. Perform a clean installation of Windows XP. This is a last resort option. This type of installation will completely remove Windows XP from your PC and install it again from scratch. If you're just curious about your administrator password, I wouldn't suggest this extreme solution.

However, if you're needing the administrator password to access diagnostic tools and this is your last effort to save your PC, performing a clean install will work. Keep in mind that it is a time consuming process due to the fact that all of your data must be backed up and then later restored.

Hi,

The set up says it couldn't find the harddisk because you need to slip stream the harddisk driver into the windows xp cd where as in the normal setup cd's it is not present.

You need to download the SATA AHCI controller driver and slip stream it in to your windows xp setup ..

You can find the information in detail on how to slip stream from the website below:

I hope the information helped you

I have ask you already how to install the dual boot os(Windows xp and Windows 7 ), but i don't complete yet .Can you explain to me again step_by_step in great detail ? because when i install windows xp...

Hello, this is how I dual boot my laptop with windows xp and windows 7

1. Backup all you important files, use an external hard-disk if possible
2. Make sure you have two drives or partitions: usually drive C and D
3. Insert your xp cd, do a quick format of drive C and install
4. Boot into windows xp and format format drive D if necessary
5. Insert your windows 7 DVD and follow the prompts. When it asks you to upgrade or new install, choose new installation
6. When you are asked to choose a location choose drive D
7. Complete your windows 7 installation
8. Thats it, you can now install drivers and programs

When installation is complete you will see both os options: windows 7 and previous version of windows (i.e xp)

I have done this numerous times without the need for any other step or software. The only rule is to is to install xp first, then windows 7.

All the best

Not able to complete windows xp setup

First let's try to "flash" the BIOS to correct the erroneous data crashes. Here's the link for the motherboard:

http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=P4VM8

After flashing go back to the BIOS and setup the appropriate settings, after that reboot and try to load Windows. If this fails then possibly you may have faulty memory modules or they are not seated correctly in the motherboard, try swapping them, hopefully they are the same. I hope this helps.

Windows. file missing or corrupt system32 config

If you're running XP, boot to the XP cd, if available (if not, mail me and I can send you a dell XP disc)
Pass the first repair opportunity, press f8, then it should allow you to do a windows repair. Do that. You will keep all your files, but windows will be completely reloaded. Will need to get updates, but that's it.
Good luck
