Usually the cable being referred to is the ethernet cable that runs from your modem or router to your laptop.
If you have xp, please consult the articles for network setup here and here.
If you're on vista, this page has a lot of articles that will walk you through the process of setting up your network and internet connection.
Just take it one step at a time and it should work out.
If you have problems, write back and let us know the following: your OS, the make and model of your router, your ISP provider, and what steps you have taken to set up the network connection, any error messages you receive.
You might also wish to check at the online support site for your router's manufacturer, or your ISP site. Normally both will have articles to explain the details of installation and setup.

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take just a moment to rate this post....thanks!

Hi there,

first of all, check if u are accessing the net via router or are hooking it up to another computer that already has internet connection.
in first case,
do make sure you use an dsl-cable with the router.(similiar to eithernet cable but all the poling is other way round.)
in second, do get an ethernet cable or dsl cable plus cross adaptor.

replug everything, make sure u enabled the network outlet of the laptop on the software side, disable the internal windows firewall or any other firewall u are using,
then try accessing the router's setting by webbrowser or the software provided with it just to ensure the laptop can reach it through the cable.
do not change anything here, just shut down windows system.

now toroughly check all the connections, make sure you have paid your provider's bill and that the router can access the Internet Service Provider's access point (run a selftest of router without the computer, see it's manual for that)
O.K.?!
Now replug everything, boot up and try accessing the internet.

if all that did not work, please come back with more details on Win-version, router, cable, Internet Provider, browser
and any errors in detail and do tell what u made beforehand(:-)

good luck

Are you plugging the cable into a router or directly into the modem? Sometimes the cable that you use to connect to the modem is different than the one for the router. They will look the same but are actually wired a little different on the end. The cable that is used to connect from the modem to a router may not work from pc to router or pc to modem. Also check and make sure the cable you are using is not bad. Check and make sure that you do not have any bent or broken contacts on the ports also.

Try to check the other end. It could be a loose ethernet cable connection. Make sure you hear the click sound. That means the RJ-45 connector is properly inserted. If you have a spare cable, you can try to change it also.

What wireless adaptor would you recommend for Acer Travel Mate 212TX

SETTING UP A BROADBAND CONNECTION
First you need to decide what type of broadband and Internet service you require and these are -
1. DSL that uses your existing telephone line.
2. Cable that uses a cable service and can include a cable TV service.
3. A USB wireless adapter uses the same 3G mobile/cell phone network and can be separately or combine with your cell phone account. This type of Internet connection uses a wireless device shaped like an USB memory stick.
Note - Combined services generally offer discount pricing and may include a modem/wireless router.

If you use a wireless router with a DSL or Cable Internet service then your laptop with a wireless card can then connect to the Internet. You can also connect to a free WiFi hot spots like McDonalds, Star Bucks, the Airport etc. using the wireless card in your laptop.
If you use the wireless 3G wireless broadband service, then you can access the Internet anywhere where your ISP has 3G wireless coverage. You need to check the service coverage area where you need Internet service.
Once you decide what type of broadband your require, then you need to check with the various Internet Service providers to see if they can offer and the cost of the various plans.
Note the download limits and the associated additional costs if you exceed the monthly download limits. Once you sign up with a Internet Service provider, their documentation will include setting up instructions and/or installation CD. http://www.fixya.com/support/r6165994-setting_up_broadband_connection

I can not connect to the Internet. I have WiFi connection but can't do anything else

Plug your computer/laptop directly into router. Can you get to the Internet then?
If you CANNOT get to the internet when your computer is plugged into the router, reboot your router. If it doesn't have a power switch, unplug it. Leave it unplugged. Next, you need to figure out if you have another modem for DSL or Cable. If you do have another DSL or Cable modem, unplug that device to. After 5 minutes has elapsed for both devices being unpowered, plug in the DSL or Cable modem to the power source. Keep the router unplugged from power. After your DSL or Cable modem has powered up for 5 minutes, plug your router into the power source. Wait a few minutes. Reboot your computer/laptop. Try the wireless connection again.
If you CAN get to the internet when your computer is plugged into the router. Reboot your computer. Try to connect again. If you cannot connect after rebooting, make sure you are connecting to YOUR OWN wireless access point and not someone else's.
Do you have other computers/laptops/wifi devices that CAN/CANNOT connect to your wireless / access the Internet?

The system didint recognize the router during the setup proces we verified the conections and stay connected but during the set up process the system didnt recognize again 10 timess

Router setup
If you are using the cd that comes with the router, that is the problem. You do not have to use the cd. Go to the control panel and un-install the program that the cd installed. then:
Shutdown your PC. Unplug the power from the router and the cable modem.
Wait 30 sec. then plug in the power to the cable modem, wait 30 sec. then plug the power to the router. Wait till you have "Internet" light then restart your PC. The PC should pick up an IP address and you should be able to get on-line. This is if you have a cable service provider. If you have DSL, the router needs to be configured with PPOe.
