How do you remove the pump on a maytag sav515deww, there is no clearence to remove the 3 scews to remove the pump to replace the belt

I'm pretty sure you don't need to remove the pump to replace the belt, the motor should have enough play on it's carriage to allow you to get the belt around. Otherwise simply tipping the washer onto it's back should allow you to get to the pump screws.

My washer wont spin or agitate and there was a burning smell

Older top load washers use a belt to drive to transfer the energy from motor to drum. However, if the belt slips, stretches, or breaks, it can cause friction and a burning smell, most likely a burning "rubber" smell. The belt is located either from the back access panel or from the underside of the washer. The solution is to replace the belt with a new one. To replace the belt you can open the back lid of the washer
To replace the belt carefully pry up on front washer top to release plastic keeper pins, remove 2 Phillips screws from beneath lower front washer panel, slightly lift upward on panel to release. Now remove old broken belt, push new belt beneath large tub pulley and put belt on small motor pulley. After this push back belt tension /idler arm, start belt on large tub pulley, turn tub pulley by hand to run belt on, release tension on idler arm. Replace front panel and lower top.
Hope this helps... Please post back if you need more information.

Model SAV515DEWW will go thru the complete cycle but does not spin out the water. If we go back to the extended spin spot it will then spin it out. Is it the selector/timer?

Yes, it is the timer. I decided to not repair mine because it was 6 years old and they wanted $100 for the new timer plus $130 to install it. This line of Maytags is very problematic. My brother had the same model (3-4 years) and his bearings went out in the spin cycle. The whole tub full of clothes and water crashed to the floor, gouging a big whole in his concrete basement floor. It kicked off the circuit breaker and threw soap and water all over the place. We learned that these two problems are common with this washer.

How to replace a belt on a washer

On some washers, mostly older models, a belt is used to transfer power from the motor to the transmission and pump. If that belt breaks, the washer will not operate properly but it will make sounds like it is doing something. If the belt slips or is loose, the washer may operate sporadically or erratically. It may make loud squealing noises and there may be a burning smell. Some models use two belts, one for the transmission and one for the pump.

To replace the drive belt, you will need to open the access panel or in some cases tip the washer onto its side to expose the belt on the bottom. Start by removing the back cover, and look for a belt. If you do not see a belt (or a place for a belt - the belt itself may have broken and is hidden from view) and you can see the floor then your washer is a direct drive model that does not use a belt. If you cannot see the floor because there is a steel floor in the washer, locate the motor and determine if it extends through the bottom plate. If so, then the belt is accessed from beneath the washer.

If you have to tip the washer over, place a large piece of cardboard on the floor to protect the floor and the washer's finish. Because a washer is pretty heavy, you will need an able-bodied assistant to safely tip the washer onto its side. Also, there will be some water remaining in the washer, so have sponges and towels ready to clean up any spill.

To remove the old belt unscrew the clamps securing the pump coupling ( a leathery or rubber flexible part that connects the motor to the water pump). Remove the pump coupling to slip the old belt out. Some models instead require you to loosen the motor mounting bolts and shift it inward to relieve tension on the belt. Remove the old belt.

Place the new belt over the transmission pulley first then place it over the motor pulley. If it is too tight, place the belt over the motor pulley's nearest edge and then slowly turn the motor pulley to pull the belt around and into the pulley. Replace the pump coupling or tighten the motor mounting bolts. The belt should deflect no more than one half inch when you press on the longest straight run.

Replace the cover and test the washer for proper operation.

Thanks for using fixya

My Maytag Legacy SAV515DEWW does not drain and spills over..

Well, turn the water off, install the old brakes (or wait for the new), and run the unit through a cycle (without clothes) to pump all the water out.

With the new brakes installed, and the drum empty of water, turn the water back on, run the unit through a cycle to confirm all works properly. If not, make the additional needed repairs before proceeding. If it works fine, then your good to go and start washing clothes again.
