Here is the instructions DIRECT FROM BRIGGS & STRATTON:

This is a relatively simple process, but you have to be VERY careful when doing this. The spring is long, under some tension and has sharp edges.Anytime you are dealing with the manual rewind starter assembly, there is risk of the spring coming out and possibly injuring yourself or others. If you do not feel comfortable performing this repair, I strongly suggest visiting one of our many authorized dealers in your area and have them do this for you.
You will have to remove the gas tank to get at the rewind and blower housing. Remove the entire blower housing and rewind assembly and turn it upside down.
NOTE:You do not have to drill out the rivets to get to the back of the rewind assembly. This is only necessary if you are removing the ENTIRE rewind assembly, (metal housing and all) and are separating it from the blower housing.
You'll need a pair of vise grips or a screw driver, some rewind rope, a long thin sharp tip flexible object (the wire from a coat hanger may work) and a lighter handy.

  1. Take the pulley and start to turn it so that the rope becomes loose.
  2. Remove the rope.
  3. Once the pulley is all the way out, with the most tension, either use the screwdriver between the spokes of the pulley, or use the vise grips to hold the pulley in place; be careful not to place too much pressure on the vise grips, the plastic pulley may break!
  4. Make sure that the hole in the pulley lines up with the hole on the rewind assembly.
  5. Using the wire from the coat hanger, push the rope through the hole of the rewind and pulley. Pull the rope through the pulley and tie it off. Now use the lighter to burn the end of the rope to prevent the not from coming off.
  6. Now, remove the screwdriver or vise grips, while holding on to the pulley.
  7. SLOWLY let go of the pulley and the rope should feed back into the pulley as you do this.

I believe this model has the gas tank on top, so you have to repove it and the oil dip stick and anything else to get to the engine cover, which is attached by for bolts. two in front and two in back, pull up and off and you will see your rope starter cord.

How can I replace starter pull cord?

Hi James:
Replacing any starter cord is usually a matter of removing the pull start assembly, pulling the cord until it is completely unwound, block the reel so it cannot retract, remove the old cord, (remember EXACTLY how it was connected), install a new cord, unblock the reel so it can retract, re-install the assembly.
It may be necessary to remove covers or engine shrouds to get to the pull start assembly. That's part of the fun of "do-it-yourself".
Cheers..

How to put a new pull rope on it How do I put a new pull rope on

It realy depends on what model we are talking about, so i will give a general disciption, remove the four screws retaining the starter to the saw, remove the starter, if the cord is still under tention, pull the starter handle out approx 8", whilst held out hold the pulley to stop it retracting, let go the starter handle and unwind the now lose cord from around the pulley, once enough cord has been unwound let the pulley slowly turn until all the spring tention has gone, remove the center fixing screw, and remove the pulley, pull the old cord away, refit a new suitable diameter cord, knot the end and pull the cord into the pulley so as the knot sits flush into the hole in the pulley, wind the cord fully around the pulley, now refit the pulley to the cover, refit the centre screw ,push the other end of the cord through the cover eyelet and refit the starter handle with a suitable knot, now wind the cord around the pulley a further two times by turning the pulley and winding up the spring, allow the spring to pull the cord in, if required wind the pulley a further turn until the cord is suitably tentioned in the cover, replace the cover on the machine, pull the cord out to make sure it has engaged fully into the pawls before fully tightening the fixing screws.

Yes.Go to a harware store they or at least most sell the cord you need in bulk.Keep the handle as you will need it.Remove the fly wheel cover and the cord attaches to the fly wheel.Tie a knot in one end of the cord and slip it through the handle.Thread it through the hole in the fly wheel cover. Then just wrap it around the fly wheel.Reattach the cover, and you are done.

How do I replace the pull start?

Remove the four screws securing the starter houseing, with the starter removed, pull the cord out, tuck the cord into the cut a way in the side of the pulley and allow the cord to wind in slowley to let the tention off the spring, make sure all the tention has gone, now remove the centre screw, take away the pulley centre and the round spring from behind, note the hole in the pulley and the centre hub for the spring location, now carefully remove the pulley, be aware there is a large spring behind, remove the knot in the end and remove the starter handle, fit the cord back into the new pulley, refit the pulley into the cover making sure to locate into the spring behind, thread the cord back through the cover and reconnect the handle, knot the cord, re fit the round spring back into the locating hole in the pulley, re fit the pulley hub making sure the spring fits into the hole in the hub, re fit the securing screw, now put the cord back into the cut a way in the side of the pulley, wind up the spring, allow it to pull the cord back into the starter, only wind it enough to pull the cord fully back into the cover, re fit the starter.

The start rope line is cut. How do I replace it?

you can buy new starter cord from smallplantsalesuk on ebay ,as to fitting the new cord, don't know your machine but you need to remove the cover where the cord comes out, normally removing the cover means loosening 4 screws ,fitting it thread the new cord through the spool, making a knot on the end, winding on the same length of cord that you take off, threading through cover and back through the handle, and again a knot rgds

Here is a general overview of what you need to do.
1. Get a new cord
2. Remove the old cord from t-handle.
3. Remove cover of starter pully & old cord( pay attention to which way it is wound or mark w/ an arrow).
4. Tie new cord onto pully & wind.
5. Now you need to pre-load the re-winder spring. ( If you need help with this write me a comment & I can help).
6. Holding the rewound spring, thread the cord through the cover and t-handle and tie.
7. reattach the cover.
Hope this helps,

How to repair the pull starter for the WEED EATER Power edge PE5 50 - 22 cc engine the rope pulled out"

NOT SURE IF YOUR STARTER IS PART OF THE COVER BUT IF IT IS IT CAN BE A BIT TRICKY AS SOME MACHINES YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THE STARTER WHEEL TO GAIN ACCESS TO REMOVE WHAT IS LEFT OF THE OLD CORD AND THEN FEED ANOTHER CORD THROUGH THE HOLE. UNDER THE STARTER WHEEL YOU SHOULD HAVE A LARGE COILED SPRING WITH A CIRCULAR HOOK POSSIBLY ON THE END WHICH HAS TO ENGAGE TOO THE UNDERSIDE OF THE WHEEL, ONCE THAT IS DONE YOU HAVE TO PULL THE ROPE INTO A NOTCH ON THE WHEEL BEFORE YOU WIND IT AROUND THE WHEEL, TURN THE WHEEL IN THE DIRECTION THAT THE COILED SPRING END WAS POINTING UNTIL IT STOPS, BACK IT OFF 1 TURN FEED THE END OF THE CORD THROUGH THE HOLE IN THE BODY OF THE COVER AND PUT A LOOP IN THE CORD NEAR THE HOLE TO STOP THE CORD FROM WINDING IN, THEN PUT THE RUBBER PULL END ON THE CORD AND TIE A KNOT IN THE CORD BEHIND THE RUBBER PULLER TO STOP THE CORD FROM PULLING BACK THROUGH THE HOLE.
rELEASE THE LOOP IN THE CORD NEAR THE COVER HOLE THAT YOU PUT IN AND LET THE SPRING WIND THE CORD BACK IN TO THE STARTER WHEEL

Hi, remove the recoil top cover with the recoil attached. ( DO NOT TAKE OUT THE SPOOL OR YOU COULD HAVE THE SPRING GET YOU IN THE FACE)
Remove old cord.
With your new cord lace it through the recoil spool centre hole with a knott on the end.
now depending if the recoil winds in clockwise when spool is facing you wind the cord around it a few times by turning the spool clockwise,
Then put the cord in the notch at the side of the spool & wind the spool & cord anticlockwise about twice the number of turns of cord (this should tension the spring).
Take your end of the cord & lace it through the hole outside of the casing & fit you pull handle.
But hold the spool firmly untill the cord has a good knott on the end of it.
(Sometimes I see the guys here putting a loop in the cord to stop it sliping in while they tie a knott on the end of the handle.)
