Do you have an LCD display? Many LCD monitors have an inverter circuit to power the backlight that will work for a while until they heat up, and then the inverter circuit shuts down and the backlight will go out. If you do have an LCD, look at the screen after it goes dark under a strong light. If you can make out an image of light and dark areas, it's the backlight.

Go into safe mode and change you display setting back to standard.

Ensure your display drivers are compatible to your graphics card.

Videocard not working

Try removing the new card, booting into BIOS, change your video setting the slot of your card: I believe your card is PCI-E, save changes and exit. When it starts to reboot, turn the computer off, install the new card and then try rebooting again. You may also have to boot into Safe Mode\Uninstall the original video driver or disable that video component and then try rebooting your system.

IBM T40 Laptop screen goes black, will not come back

First of all, you have to check whether you can see video signal with surrounding light tilting the screen.
If you can see dim image, all you have to do is replace back-light inverter or fix it. Usually, the fuse is open and you can connect it by simple soldering.
If you can't see dim image, it is another problems.
Give it a try.
