Question about Sewing Machines

1 Answer

My Mum has an Elna Supermatic - about 40yrs old I think. It suddenly started going on its own as though you had the foot pedal on (except we didn't) Now it needs fixing. It's not the foot pedal as we tried a new one of those. Any ideas on how to get this fixed?

I suspect it is a capacitor near the motor on the bottom. When these go bad the speed will be eratic. Sometimes these can just be disconnected and it will run fine. The capacitor was just for noise reduction on peoples radios back in the day. Yet when they go bad the machine can run full out. You may need a tech with electrical knowledge. Sorry, I'm just saying.

Elna 6000 sewing machine, machine running very slowly and will not speed up when more pressure applied to foot peddle. More details below ?

This happened with my 50 year old Elna Supermatic. It ran a bit slow, so I oiled it and it ran again okay. But then it got slower, and I had to turn the wheel to get it to start and then it would run. But then even that didn't work. No go, period. I checked the foot pedal which had a bit of lint inside but no obvious problems. But the light worked so power was getting through to the machine.
I took it in for service, and the repair guy said that the brushes inside the electric motor (they supply power to the turning part called the armature) were worn out and no longer making contact. $11.00 for new ones, and a service/cleaning charge, and it's running at full power again.

Elna 9000 foot pedal

it sounds like you may have a connection problem with the plug on the sewing machine and the foot pedal, it would be a good idea to have them checked.

The feed isn't working on my Elna

I'd suggest that you join the Yahoo user group for Heirloom Elnas, the members are very helpful and share images of manuals and their experience. You should be able to download a copy of the supermatic manual from here once you've joined up.

Is your supermatic a green model like this one?

tally_girl_10.jpg
or there is a white with blue top supermatic from the Star Series, it looks like this

tally_girl_11.jpg
If its the star series, you'll see above a round knob with red and black numbers, this is the stitch length dial. Red is reverse, black is forwards. The lever just to the left is the stitch width lever and the round dial to left again is the needle position dial.

If its the green model then the dials and knobs are in different places but they work in a similar fashion.

Good luck wiht your machine.l

My very old Elna Super foot pedal does not always start the machine. When I help it along with the wheel it might start going and then maybe not. Is it the motor or the foot peddle that is bad? Can it...

this sounds like the internal clutch drive is worn, it probably is not the foot pedal at all. It may be possible to repair it if you can track down an Elna serviceman. My Air Electronic SU got worn internally and my serviceman was able to repair it once for me.

Extra discs for an vintage Elna Supermatic plus pressor feet.

Try the usual eBay route, but also approach any Sewing Repair shop as they often acquire odd bits from old machines....We had 9 disks for a lady with an Elna SU only last week, all from a machine traded 2 years ago and really beyond resale.

My foot pedal is really hot

Hello,
Based on your description and since your sewing machine is older, the motor inside your machine is probably drawing more current to maintain the same output power and all that current is passing thru the foot operated switch.. What that means is that your motor windings may be breaking down from age and use or the contacts within the footswitch may be getting carbon on them from passing more current than the original design called for and becoming resistive ( which equates to it getting hot). I suggest you discontinue using it until you have it maintenanced to make sure you aren't risking a shock or fire hazard. Sight unseen, it's difficult to draw any other conclusion.
Regards,
Rick

1967 Elna Star series Supermatic

i have an elna model 62C supermatic purchased in 1972. on yours, do you mean the motor won't run at all? or does the electronic foot not cause a response to sew? after 30 years, in 2002, my electronic foot quit working. i opted to purchase the internal electronic module, and replaced it into the original housing (did it myself). the two weak spots in an otherwise amazing machine are the two plastic gears--rotary hook gear which works your bobbin, and the camshaft stack gear which works cams/zigzag/etc. i have replaced both in the last 5 years (again, did it with my husband's help). i'd say the Elna is pretty awesome sewing machine with the couple of million hours i've used it (no exaggeration!) and the minimum of repairs it has needed. an excellent source of parts is www.whitesewingcenter.com. parts are reasonable, and authentic. Raymond White is extremely helpful and knowledgeable. good luck. jeannie
