Good morning, doctor-e!
When you get the HDD this full, you will normally experience issues like you mentioned.
Without knowing what you have on this drive, I can only offer the following suggestions:

1-remove any old files, programs or clutter that you don't have any further use for.
2-If you have large amounts of audio and/or video files, back them up to a CD, then remove them from the disk.
3-Buy yourself a bigger drive. (An early Christmas present?)

Basically, you are going to have to clear up some space on your existing drive. The system uses the available clear space on the HDD for swapping files, running the programs and so forth. As the free space gets limited, the system will start having trouble finding enough space to do it's thing.

Restore files

You can have the data removed by a file recovery business, it is costly. They remove the stoarge media and read it directly using special equipment. Unless the hard drive works (you can read it with your computer) that is your only choice

My SanDisk 2 GB Cruzer suddenly stopped working. When plugged in it is still recognised as installed, but indicates that the disk in the drive is unformatted and asks if I want it formatted. The volume...

Windows cannot read the "Table-Of-Contents" from the SanDisk.
So, it "guesses" that trying to write a new T.O.C. will prepare the disk for "first" usage.

So, say 'no' to the question.

Search online for "file recovery" programs -- they try to read through the entire volume, chunk-by-chunk, to see if _any_ of the files can be read, and if those chunks can be "stitched" together to reassemble your files.

Or, spend $9 to buy a replacement 2GB unit.

I have an xbox the first one black with x on top it has just started to come up on the screen in a box saying your xbox need service can you help thanks

In the top left or right corner there will a number, eg 07, which means its a hard drive error which means the xbox is more or less stuffed as each hard drive for the original xbox is specific to the main printed circuit board.
Theres another symtom that tech's call FRAG lights. Where the lights Flash Red And Green, hence the acronym FRAG, if you are getting this symptom, theres a chance your xbox has died.
I hope this helps. Good luck.

If you may have de-fragged the hard drive recently and compressed the executable file for Windows. You can load into your windows back up ur file and reformat with a fresh load of the OS. You can as well try a Windows repair using your restore disk.

Not much memory left in my powerbook

De-fragmentation does nothing to free up space. It only moves files that have been fragmented across scattered sectors into a file running across contiguous sectors. This speeds up disk read operations and is less stress/wear on the hard drive. To free up space... continue what you're doing. Move all non-essential files to an external drive and uninstall any programs that you don't really need.

If this answers your question and provides a solution to your problem then please take a moment to rate this post. - Thanks.

Need patch for free space 2 game to play in windows vista needs to recognize I have 4 gigs of memory

is it not installing, try to browse setup.exe or install file for the game, right click and choose run as administrator..it should be installed w/o any problems,or if you were able to install this and the game just crashes upon playing it,you need to put it to compatibility mode,To do this search for freespace.exe (Probably in C:\Program Files\Volition\", right click and select the "compatibility" tab. Check the box that says "run this program in compatibility mode for" and select "Windows 98"

Drive full??

I think this article may explain it. You may need to break up your external drive in to 200 GB chunks so you can see all of the space: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86178
