Unfortunately for you, YES it is true. Trial SW is for a limited period and once that expires you either purchase your COA or whatever you call it and continue using it or you stop using it.

Unfair but true. How about a legal alternative that costs zero.
Do a search on Open Office by Sun Micro. It is an Office suite like MS, can open any MS file and costs nothing. I switched about six month ago and had no need to look back.
