The product key is provided to you by Microsoft and will be on the inside of your vista ultimate edition retail edition plastic box (the one shown in the picture) (Usually this key is 25 characters in length)
or if your operating system was pre-installed (came with your computer) the Product Key will be stuck to your desktop pc case usually on one of the side panels but can be on the rear or top of the computer tower case.
If it is a laptop then the Microsoft certificate of authenticity sticker is found on the underside of the laptop or underneath where the battery is. By removing the battery from the laptop you may find the sticker here.
The activation key is completely different to the product key.
If it is an activation key that is required you will need to complete the following to activate windows.
How to access the Product Activation Wizard loadTOCNode(2, 'moreinformation'); If the Product Activation Wizard is not open, follow these steps to start the wizard:
Windows Vista loadTOCNode(3, 'moreinformation');
On doing this a window will open asking if you wish to activate over the internet, (it is often easier and quicker to choose this option) however you can choose to activate your copy over the telephone. Simply choose your regional location for example United Kingdown and Microsoft will provide usually a toll free (freephone) number for you to call them and activate your copy of Windows Vista.
