On whirlpool (all manufacture) dryers the ground wire is linked to the center terminal with the white wire and attaches to the cabinet grounding all metal on dryer since on panel attaches to the next making the entire cabinet have continuty through the neutral/ground wire.
When connecting 3 wire cord connect the two outside wires to red/black on cord block and center wire to white/center terminal connection on block.
For a 4 wire cord red to red black to black white to white and the green to rear of cabinet/any panel near block

Dryer Cord and Wiring Dryer 3 Wire or 4 Wire

Replacing eletrical cord to a four prong cord. there are only three connections. there are no color codes to make it easier. How do I replace the cord

Dryers are 220 Volts AC and the outer connections inside the dryer are "hot" or live legs (black or black and red wires) of the circuit, while the center one is typically the neutral (white) wire.

The difference between a 3 prong plug and receptacle and a 4 pronged one is simply that the 4 prong plug and receptacle has a dedicated ground integrated into it, whereas the 3 prong plug is what's commonly referred to as an ungrounded circuit. There is no dedicated ground in a 3 prong plug and receptacle that makes a separate, grounded connection from the dryer to the receptacle to the electrical panel of the house.

Also, please look at either the back of the dryer for a basic wiring diagram, or look inside the access panel where the dryer cord is connected. There should be indications as to what each terminal is for, as I stated, typically the outer connections are the "hot" while the center one is typically the neutral. If you notice a strap running from one of the dryer's connection terminals to the cabinet/frame of the dryer, that is the neutral. The others are the hot terminals, which are the outside ones.

Look for a green grounding screw inside the dryer's electrical connection section. That is where the green wire on the cordset would be connected/terminated.

If you wish, you can get a free Installation Guide for your dryer at the following link to download and/or print out at:

It will show you the connections for both a 3 and 4 wire cordset.

Hope you find this Very Helpful and best regards!

How do i wire two 110v breakers to make a 220v outlet

very simple!! in all homes there is a breaker box it used to be called a fuse box like in cars of today...there are 2 banks of breakers going from top to bottom both sides. each side represents 110 volts ac. to run a line for a 220 dryer you use # 10 romex wire. the lower the number the thicker the wire. # 10 will work just fine. you need to take the box cover off and you will see a menagerie of wires these mean nothing to you. in the #10 romex you will find 3 wires. 1white 1black and 1 with no coating or bare wire this 1 will be earth ground.. if you look inside the box you wll see where it goes.. the black and white 1 goes 1 on each side. black to the left white to the right.make sure you turn off the main breaker before you put tour fingers inside the box or you will become electrocuted. and still be carefull. there could be residual voltage. use rubber your connections and put the box front back on.. now that thatis done you are going to need a pigtail female socket and a pigtail mail plug.. both with 3 pin. go to your local hardware store or home depot and tell them that you need both male and female connectors..take them home hook them up and you are good to go.... now was that complicated? have a good 1 my freind..

In theory that would work, however, the technically correct way to do it would be to install a 3-wire receptacle and a 3-wire cord on the dryer and make the bonding connection between the neutral and equipment ground (the dryer frame) using the factory jumper inside the terminal connection block of the dryer.

When you connected the new cord, did you make certain to connect the line 1/2 wires to the Line1/2 input's, and the Neutral to Neutral inside the wiring compartment?

Not heating up almost sounds like the heating elements are not getting their full 220 VAC, but then if you had something wired wrong in back, a breaker should trip. Make sure you've connected the new power cord correctly at the input power point. I am guessing this problem occurred between the time that you had it at the old house, and the new house, with the power cord changeover.

Running 10/3 wire and wiring clothes dryer directly. The dryer does not have a ground connect for the bare copper ground. Can it be connected to the white neutral at the dryer?

NO!! use the green screw on back where cabinet ground goes red to red white to white black to black remove cabinet ground wire and connect it up to white neutral on dryer connect bare ground to cabinet ground screw ..but wouldn't it be better to connect wall plug to house wiring and correct cord to dryer? always hate working on hard wired equipment since a lot of breakers are never labeled or relabeled correctly

Wiring 4 wird dryer plug to 3 wire 10/3 for 220 welder

the four wire plug seperates the neutral and ground. the three wire just piggybacks the ground to the neutral. so just get a three wire cord that fits the 220 plug on the generator and install it on your dryer make sure to attach the ground correctly for your three wire setup
