1. Switch on your computer according to the manual. Make sure your headphones are plugged in, or your speakers are plugged in and powered on.


Open the CD or DVD drive tray. Do this by pressing the button next to it.Insert CD into the drive, then close the drive tray by pressing lightly on the front of the tray.


Launch a music player. Open Windows Media Player, iTunes, or any other program that will play CDs, then press play

power down unplug, open case, might need to open both sides, undo screws, pull plugs off, slide out replace, close up power up

open your computer case unplug the cables that connect to the back of the cd rom. plug computer back in power it up. shut it down once it loads. then once it is powered down open case again and plug the cables back in make sure they are connected well. close case and power up the computer.

You must open the case, then check the power cable that leads to the cd-rom drive. It should be pretty easy to identify the male/female Sata power plugs. If the cable is not plugged in, plug it, then start the machine to see if the drive works. If the drive is plugged in but still has no power, you'll have to acquire a new cd-rom drive.

1) Computer on open the CD drive tray. Turn the computer off leaving the tray open. Unplug the computer from power.

Use a can of compressed air for computers, and clean the drive out.\
Break the plastic lock tab off of the nozzle, of the can of air, attach the plastic straw to the nozzle.
Aim in a slightly downward fashion as you spray air into the optical drive. (CD drive)

You are trying to clean, dust, dirt, etc. out of the inside of the drive, but are mostly trying to clean the laser optical eye, located towards the bottom of the optical drive.

Allow a few minutes for any propellant that came out to dry, then plug the computer back into power.
The CD drive tray will shut automatically.

An optical drive is a mechanical device. It's 'Life-span' is rated in hours of usage.
A drive that does not respond with a blinking light is beyond it's Life Cycle.

Buying an optical drive is Much cheaper online, than buying from a large chain store locally, IMHO.

OK, it sounds to me like you have one of two issues going on.

When you clean out dust near the mother board or system board you need to be VERY careful. There are small diodes that stick up from the system board that are very sensitive. So, if they get hit or the small wires that connect them to the board get severed, you system board could get damaged.

From your description, you are getting power to the system board, but there are not signals going from the system board to any of the drives. Inside your computer, there are several ribbon cables plugged into the system board. Make sure that all the cables are plugged in securely at both ends. Also, there is on large collection of wires coming from the power supply that go to a large, white rectangular plug that plugs into the system board. Make sure that this is securely plugged in. There may be another small white square plug that also plugs into the system board and provides power.

If all the cables are secure, check the power cables as well as the ribbon cables, and your hard drive and CD drives are not responding, I would guess that you have a damaged system board.

Do this with the computer powered off and unplugged.

Please check this and see if it makes any difference.

Try this first to get it out of hibernation mode. Unplug the power supply, remove the battery. go hava cup of coffee. Come back, reinstall the battery and power cord. Attempt to restart the computer.

If this fails go to....

Look at the cd drive. Next to the button that normally opens the cd drive is a pinhole. Power up the computer. Using a straightened paper clip, push the paper clip into the pinhole. you should be able to get the cd drive to open.

If you can not get the computer out of sleep mode you should now be able to get the cd drive open and use the recovery disk.

Given all the things that you ahev done, clean the drive with a CD/DVD cleaner and / or air duster. Check the device is enabled in Device Manager and it shows no errors. If it does then read the explanation. If not and it looks OK you will most likely need a new drive!

I would assume that your D drive is your CD Rom Drive. If you go into My Computer and the drive isn't there, Lets assume first that there is a problem with the Drive. If you have power to it and the drive does open to let you insert a disk, then our next step is to see if your data cable running to the drive is connected. Make sure that all power cables are unplugged before you open up the computer. Once opened look at the back of the CD Rom drive to check that the power plug is connected. Its the first set of 4 wires closest to you. The next cable next to that is the CD Rom Data IDE Cable. This cable must be plugged in all the way. Most of the IDE Cables will have a red stripe on one side. Make sure this red stripe is closest to the power cable for the drive. This will insure that you have this plugged in correctly. If you follow the IDE cable from the CD Rom to the mainboard (Motherboard) , you can make sure that this end is also seated firmly to the board. If all this is as it should be, go ahead and plug all your cables back in and restart your computer.

If this still doesnt solve your problem you might want to check your bios and insure that the CD Rom is recognized. It will show up in there if it sees it. If any of these solutions dont solve your problem, I would be leaning toward a bad CD Rom Drive.
