is this a desktop computer? if it is, you can replace the DVD drive to a new one, they cost around 20-30 usd at

If the current drive or computer is a laptop or is in warranty, contact your dealer for repair.

If you are outside of warranty you can clean the laser lens yourself with a q-tip and alcohol.

Here is a video on the cleaning, the cleaning is done the same way on all optical drives.

This method is better compared to the DVD lens cleaner.

If the problem remains after being cleaned properly, the drive is most likely failing, due to the cheap price its best to replace it with a new one.

Here is a video on how to replace a DVD drive in a DELL computer, I didn't find a acer video.

    But basically.

    1. unplug the computer from all cables
    2. open the side panel of the computer to get inside
    3. unscrew the dvd drive and disconnect the connectors from its back.
    4. you may have to open the other side of the case aswell to unscrew 2 or more screws from the other side of the drive
    5. pull out the drive after it is free
    6. purchase a drive with similiar connectors, if you see 40 pins on the drive back, its a IDE drive, if it has 2 smaller flat connectors, its a SATA drive.

    7. after having purchased the new drive, push it in the case, connect the connectors as they where on the old one.
    8. screw in the drive from both sides

8.b. - at this point you can also plug in the computer and test that the drive is working.

    9. close the case
    10. connect the cables and test your computer.

Now here is the DELL video on how its done.

If your computer has a DVD rom or writer then this problem usually occurs. DVD roms or writers are very unreliable when it comes to reading CD's after some time of use the DVD roms do not read CD's but will read DVDs and then if it is a writer it will stop writing all will write and stop before finalizing. This problem is caused by the lens assembly which misaligns after a long time of use or the lens assembly itself no longer focusing correctly. However if you have a CD rom or CD writer then you must start by cleaning it. The cleaning of CD roms can be easy or slightly complicated if the lens is covered with residue that is moisture related. That is the lens could have accumulated dirt mixed with moisture then dried up. This would need manual cleaning using a cotton bud with some of the liquid that comes with the Disc cleaners you clean the lens until it is squeaky clean. Do this being careful not to scratch. But first try cleaning with the disc cleaner. If it doesn't work then do the manual way. If all this does not work then change the lens assembly or buy a new DVD rom or writer.

My computer does not recognise the disc it keeps on saying i must put in a disc

Please check both of your CD type and CD writer. You may have CD rom with DVD disc cause your computer is unable read the this. If everything is OK, you may have optical lens problem on computer. Please clean the lens with lens cleaner. If problem persist, replace your lens with new one.

My dvd player on my laptop used 2 work but now it suddenly stopped working and i cant get it to work it doesn't seem to recognise that there is a dvd in my computer. i have tried playing it in every single...

You may use any CD/DVD drive lens cleaner to clean the lens as it may be that the lens in the CD/DVD drive is not able to recognize the disc due to accumulation of dust. Next, you may perform System Restore to the time when the CD/DVD drive operated normally. If the issue persists then you may try reinstalling the Operating System.
If the issue persists even after performing all the above mentioned steps then the issue may be Hardware related and the CD/DVD drive may require service.

DVD player and CD player stop reading discs.

try opening the Drive Trays, and hold a hot air dryer about 2-3 feet away for about 15-20 Minutes, Aim the dryer towards the opened trays. close the trays reboot the computer.
If still not working, i,d suggest putting a laser head cleaner in, and getting some more heat for your House.
Computers do usually tend to function much better at Room Temprature.
Hope this solves your problem.
