Question about Sony VAIO VGN-NS160D/W Notebook

2 Answers

Blu-Ray disc drive will read DVD but not Blu-Ray disc. When I first bought my computer the blu-ray drive worked perfectly with no problems at all, now after 8 months I put in a blu-ray disc and the computer doesn't even read it. I look in my device manager and it says that the disc drive is perfectly fine. It is able to read normal DVD's but still will not read my blu-rays. Any advice would be greatly appriciated.

POSSIBLE solution... (don't shoot the messenger on this one, lol!)

I'm sure you have tried, but have you cleaned your optics lately? The best thing about Blu-ray is that it uses a much narrower laser beam to read the data, so more "stuff" can fit on a disk... however, this leaves far less room for error. It may be able to read a DVD, since the DVD's "grooves" are much wider, and a CD's "grooves" are like the grand canyon compared to Blu-ray...

Using a Q-tip and a small amount of rubbing alcohol, and GENTLY rotate the swab across the lens, rotating it in the opposite direction you are wiping. This should "lift" any dust or grime from the lens. I would also clean the tray with a soft lint-free cloth (using an air-can just moves the dirt around, doesn't solve the problem)

Hope this helps!

Hi,

  1. Go into device manager and uninstall the Blu-ray drive, then restart the laptop.
  2. If that doesn't work, check the firmware is up to date, if not update it, if it is then try to force an overwrite of the current firmware as is maybe corrupt.
  3. Check your mainboard bios is up to date
  4. Last resort is to do a FULL recovery
If you have done all of the above and its still the same, then unfortunately the drive is defective and needs replacing - If its an OEM laptop then this is quite a common problem as the drives are mass produced.

Thanks

How to rip Blu-ray DVD on Mac for Free

Now that Blu-ray players are becoming more common in the living room, so are the Blu-ray DVD movies we watch on them. To rip a Blu-ray disc on Mac, you need an External Blu-ray Writer to enable your Mac read Blu-ray disc, and then downloaded the free MakeMKV beta to extract video and audio files from Blu-ray DVD to your hard drive, preserving the full quality of your Blu-ray DVD movies.

Rip Blu-ray DVD movies to MKV on the Mac

Connect external Blu-ray writer to your Mac and launch MakeMKV, and the software immediately found my USB-connected drive, and let me read the Blu-ray disc inside.

It then will present you with a list of titles, each with a file size next to it. The first title was the main movie—easy to tell because it listed the number of chapters and also displayed the largest file size of the group.

Clicking the disclosure triangle next to that title shows the various audio and subtitle tracks contained in the movie, and let you deselect those you don’t want. Then click the Make MKV button and a MKV file will be on your hard drive when the conversion is done.

Play ripped Blu-ray movies on Mac

MakeMKV basically strips the copy protection from movies and then copies them into an MKV container. The result is a perfect copy of the movie, at its original frame size and data rate, which I was able to play on my Mac Pro using the free VLC media player.

This easy to use Mac Video Converter converts ripped Blu-ray DVD movies quickly, and it provides a wide range of useful presets for iMovie, iDVD, iPod, iPhone, Apple TV, PSP and many popular mobile phones.

We bought the Burlesque dvd and our blu-ray player cannot read the disc? The error messages 'cannot operate this disc and cannot play back this disc. This is the first dvd the blu-ray player cannot...

It's something about the Burlesque dvd. I have the same problem with mine when I try and play it on my Sony blue-ray player. It's the only disc I have that it won't play. Disc is a DVD Video disc but it will no't play in the Sony player. It plays fine on other dvd players and my computer, but not on the Sony.

When attempting to copy blu ray disc message reads disc not detected.(emachine e525)

Although the same shape and size, Blue Ray disks are a completely different format to DVD's and CD's. You drive won't recognise them

You'll need to get a Blue ray RW drive, and it doesn't stop there. Because there a great deal more information on a blueray disk, you'll need several dvd disks to copy the info to a DVD.

Bluerays hold about 25Gb of data, DVD's hold 4.7 GB and CD's hold 700Mb data.

Will not play any disc that it use to play. The DVD reads home after loading and the Blue Ray reads unknown. Sony BDP-S350

I had the same problem with mine and took a chance. it would read dvds but not blu-ray disc. i have done this procedure before with a regular dvd player so i tried it with my blu-ray and it worked. First you must open the blu-ray and take the blu-ray/dvd drive out open it up expose the lazer eye reader (make sure the blu-ray player is unpluged) and clean the eye with cotton swab diped in rubing alcohol.i would recommend using a flashlight when doing so. do this lightly and dry the eyes with the other side of the swab. you will see the difference once you clean it. I opened mine up after cleaning it with a dvd cleaner and the eye was still dirty. the eyes had a light film on it. I seen this on my dvd players that i have cleaned before. the film was enough to make the player not read the bul-ray disc. do not try this if you are not comfortable taking stuff apart and putting it back togetter. i hope this fixes your problem.

No read blu ray disk

Look to see if your system came with a blu-ray dvd player. Cause according to the specs to your sysem it comes with a dvd+-rw drive which means it can play original dvds as well as movies on a dvd+r and dvd-r. Look for the blu-ray logo on the front of your drive. It should look like this:
http://www.pacificdisc.com/images/bd44.png

If it doesn't have that logo then that means your drive can't play blu-ray. If it does have the blu-ray logo and its not playing those discs then you need either a software program that will play blu-ray or your blu-ray dvd player has a weak laser and the drive would nee to be replaced.

Installing blu-ray drive on hp m8200n - dvds not read

Look at the back of both drives, there should be some tiny jumpers located next to where you plug the data cable in. One drive should be set to master and one drive to slave. Chances are you have both set as master. Change one to slave and your problem should go away.
