Hi everybody i had the same
problem as everyone else here my ps3 stopped reading disks but i got a fix first

fixya and now the is problem fixed. HOW? Easy i
phoned sony told them what happened told them i had opened it he said that i
shouldn't of BUT they will still fix it its the 5th
on nov they're picking it up on the 13th and it
should be here within 10 days free of charge plus what i forgot to mention my
warranty was out of date but they said they are extending EVERYBODYS warranty to fix this problem plus when it
returns it will have 3 month warrant so do as i do and phone sony
08705 99 88 77
my ps3 wont read any games whats wrong with it
i was just on Call of Duty 4 , i was shooting my gun and there was no sound at all then i turned my ps3 off and now it wont read the disk!!
I had the same problem twice with my playstation 3 and this is what I did I contacted the bbb and filled a complaint with them about sony. Then I paid the 150.00 for the second time to get it fixed again and then three months later I was contacted by sony and they gave me a check for 300.00 and also sent me a new playstation 3 the 80gb and told me if there was ever a problem with it they will fix it for free.If your having a problem with your ps3 not reading desk make sure you contact the bbb because paystation is trying to say that this doesn't happen alot and if your like me and looked online and I found thousands of people with this same problem so make sure you contact the bbb because the more complaints they get about this they will be forced to fix the problem like Xbox did.
i had this problem too. i found out that i was turning the ps3 off from the back.doing that crashes the hardrive making it not able to read the disk. call the PSN and ask for a new one. when u get the new one you should start turning the ps3 off by holding the ps button then hit "turn of the system". when the ps3 "beeps" and the blue and green light turns red, then turn it off from behind............the ps3 is just like a computer if u turn it off on the pc it will crash the hardrive. hopefully this should help.
PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE SENDING YOU PS3 FOR REPAIR
I had the same problem with my PS3 but found a simple solution.
With a game already inserted start by selecting a playable demo (I use PES 2009) then once it has started to load press the PS button and the disc icon should appear below quit game icon. Then simply select the disc icon and the game will play.
This has saved me a lot of money and I hope it works for you!

If your PS3 is starting to freeze, lag or won't load any game that means the hard drive is dying but don't be alarm its very easy to fix and at the same time you would be able to upgrade it. here is what you do.
1. first you need to have a SATA hard drive ( If ever you have an old laptop and have that SATA Hard Drive it would work if not just get a new one)
2. backup all your PS3 files from your old Hard Drive but this is not necessary in order to replace a the Hard Drive just for your game save files and etc.
3.after the backup or if you decided not to back up your files unplug the PS3 and open the plastic cover at the bottom of your PS3 and you should see 3 screws. un-screw the 3 screws and slide the Hard drive casing to the right and pull it.
4.and finally unscrew the hard drive and place the new one in .
5. once you have the Hard drive out of the casing you can now placed the new hard drive in and screw it back and placed it in to your ps3
6. once you have the new Hard Drive in place you can now hook up your PS3 including all the video cables.
7. once you turn it on it will ask you to reformat your new Hard drive just click ok and full format and thats it. you can now play again and enjoy your upgraded PS3.. ITS SEEMS ALOT BUT IT WILL ONLY TAKE YOU 5 MINUTES TO REPLACE YOUR HARD DRIVE. THE LONG PART IS THE FORMATING BUT ONCE ITS DONE YOUR BACK IN BUSINESS. HOPE THIS HELPS THANKS.
the ps3 has the disk drive on the top where dust and smoke can get into it when you leave it in vertical postion so the best thin to do is to leave it in the flat horizontal position. Now to fix the reading problem I tend to switch the back power button not the front green power button when the ps3 is still on. If you do this right the controller lights should be flashing, after you turn it back on it should read the disk now or if not just try again remember its the power button on the back and only when the ps3 is still on. You could go to system settings and put restore your ps3 settings but this might lead to you data being deleted. This problem occur because you put the disk in too early or you played on the system too long the previous time and also due to dust and smoke the builds up in your console. You should cover it with a grocery bag if you have it on vertical or uses a fan in your room. this will prevent dust entry

Lots of people are having this problem for lots of different reasons. It is a problem with the disk drive. Call Sony Customer Support on 08705 99 88 77 (this is a UK number and always check here first for latest numbers: http://uk.playstation.com/contact-us/). Sony will want the serial number (on the back of the playstation under the bar code). In my case I called on a Friday morning and they have arranged a replacement system for the Monday between 8am - 6pm.
I'm sure Sony has similar arrangements in all other regions.
Good luck!
How do you save your game data before you transfer it to your USB Flash Drive so you can restore your PS3 defaults?

my ps3 says cant start .connot find hard drive
Hey everyone. I of course had the same problem where my PS3 did not read disks anymore....WHAT A STUPID PROBLEM, HUH!! I HAVE THE SOLUTION THOUGH! You will need a USB Flash Drive so you can save any data that you want from the Hard Drive. First, go into your saved material and copy anything that you will want to the Flash Drive. If You have Multiple Users that played the game and have multiple saved characters for example like I have for "Sacred 2" you will need to transfer one to a made folder on your computer before you save the other one because even though you are saving different characters and games entirely, it is called the same thing and thus will only override the last save. Once you have everything saved you need to go into "Restore PS3 System" in the System Options menu and resore it. Crappy part is that this will take around 2 hours....lame I know but it's worth it. Once it restores, plug the USB Flash Drive back in and copy the saved material back onto the PS3. Remember if you have multiple saved things from one game you might have had to put them on your computer and so you need to delete the save on the Flash Drive that you put back on the PS3 (example: one character for "Sacred 2") and then hop on your computer where you put the other save and transfer if back to your Flash Drive. Then plug it back onto the PS3 and copy that data. (example: the 2nd character for Sacred 2") Once I did this my PS3 has worked great! It reads games, movies, music, you name it. I hope this helps you guys because no one should have togo through this mess when shelling out big bucks for this kind of stuff! Let me know if you have questions as I will be monitoring this post to see what people think.
Stew, try resetting your ps3 to default, it works. Regards Val

My son had the same problem all of a sudden it stopped loading the games and because I couldn't find the receipt when I contacted Sony they said it would cost £180 to get it fixed but I HAVE THE SOLUTION> Set your box back to default. Wipe out everything as though you had just bought it from the shop. It works. We tried it by fluke and my son is playing as I type;

Hi guys, had exactly the same problem as every1 on here, if u live in the UK phone 08705 99 88 77 and explain then problem , its the sony customer support line, they dont need a reciept and they will collect your playstation from the desired address, repair or replace depending on the size of the problem and return within 10-21 days. They do advise to backup all save games and any other files on there you want to keep just incase they replace. DO NOT OPEN CONSOLE AS THIS IS A VOID OF WARRANTY and they may not repair . ---- Thanks.
how do i get my ps3 to start reading the discs again
With my PS3 on it's way home back to Sony for the disk reading error, I'm left wondering how long the whole process will take and how often I'll have to continue to send it back. So I hunted down a refurbished xbox360 with a 60 day warranty. I figure if I'm going to be continually sending systems in through the mail, I might as well have a backup and hopefully they'll never die at the same time.

I got back the PS3 with the $160 charge for the repair. Coincidentally it arrived the same day as the xbox I just purchased. I guess the point it that Sony is actually very quick with the whole process. They provide tracking from their site, UPS tracking both to and from their facility, and UPS was much more thorough with updating their tracking info and actually calling me to tell me it would be here the next day. Overall turnaround time was only about 2.5 weeks. I think it was like 5 mail days to ship it from southern cali to texas, 3 days for diagnosis and repair, and 5 mail days to come back, plus the weekends in between. I put my old hard drive back in, had to do a system update, and had to reestablish my login, but after that, everything worked great and my old COD4 account was back just as it was except strangely my customized class names were blank. The Xbox360 on the other hand required me to figure out how to synch the controller to the system, has no way to charge the controller (premium version), and no direct hdmi input (again premium version), and of course you have to pay extra to play online with the xbox360. So, we've so far learned the xbox360 is initially cheaper, but is barely functional with additional investments and is significantly less stable as a system. The solution to this thread: Keep your system well ventilated and treat it kindly because it is pretty unstable and will most likely eventually fail and need new hardware for about $160 if out of warranty.

If your ps3 fails in the first year, you can get it fixed for free. It takes about five weeks or whatever I reported here earlier. I haven't had any problems since I got my system back from repair about 5 or 6 months ago.
As for the ps3 working on one tv with hdmi, but not on another with either cable, that makes no sense.
I can tell you that if you go from hdmi back to non-hdmi, you have to hold down the on/off button to make your system reset in order to get the signal back. Going from non-hdmi to hdmi, the system is smart enough to ask you if you want to change modes automatically.
I think these systems do have drive issues, but so far it has only happened to mine once out of like 4 or 5 years that I and the guy I bought it off of have had it.

mines just died after two months of intensive playing, same problem as you guys,i was playing call of duty 4 when it froze,i tried, reseting the console but nothing,i could play dvd and cd but no ps3 games, and yes i called sony and it still under their 1 year warranty,if i send it in with the recipt,it would be free of charge,if not, theres a 169.00 dollar fee,i know it kinda sucks spending more money on a system thats allready expensive, but i guess it beats spending another 500 bucks for another one,but if it comes down to it i will,i dont know about you guys but i cant live without my ps3
omg same problem has happened 2 me yesterday.
i bought call of duty 4 yesterday morning got home and went on it after a few hours the sound went, so i quit the game but the screen went black, i turn of the console and restarted... know its not reading any games.
so i'm going to get a new ps3 and burn call of duty 4.
mine just went aswell, not showing or reading any discs allthough i havent been using call of duty so i wouldnt blame that game for the problem, who can say why the drive should be such poor quality for so many people to be having the same problem.
i called sony this morning though and they said they'l have a new one sent to my doorstep tommorow which is pretty good customer service i'd say.

ps3 consoles have been designed to only work with genuine ps3 games and blu-ray discs
Call Sony Customer Support on 08705 99 88 77 they fixed mine for free even when my warrenty was over because its such a common fault and gave me 3 months free warrenty on top incase of any other problems .
Hi guys, I had the same problem and they have exchanged my PS3. Now I dont use PS3 to see regular DVD s. Just using it for Blue ray movies and games. Looks like its working without a problem for now.

I had to take back my first sytem out of the box it did this. I have had my new system since Nov 07 and now it is doing the exact same thing as everyone else on this page! I guess the solution is to contact them and prove you bought it and hope they send a new one what did you guys do about your memory files??????
Hi.
I already posted my account of the same problem, so this is one of the resolution.
I took the PS3 to the shop I bought it from. The guy said that he'll check it and get back to me in a few days and that it might cost me, seeing as to how the warranty of 1month he had given me only covered the motherboard. When I went back to him he said that it's the lens(or perhaps the blu-ray diode as others have said, but from what I remember, he told me it was the lens).. and replacing it would cost me 15KD which is around 30 pounds sterling, and around $56 at the current exchange rates... that's after discount apparently... I asked about the guarantee he'd give me, he said 2 weeks... I asked him about what happens if it should fail after the 2 weeks, he said that would be impossible..
Anyways... it's working fine and smoothly now, no problems so.. far...
Had my ps3 3 weeks wont read any discs, called sony on monday will be bringing me a new one on wednesday lets hope its the only one i have, my friend has had 3 from them now all the same fault, not reading discs.
uk based owner Christamas present failed 'disk read error' after 2 weeks have returned to Asda's for full refund. Shame but now unsure wether to buy another one at this time only to have same fault......is it a batch from a certain origin ie. asia or europe bloggs seem to suggest ramdom pattern from all over. add your general location and where you bought might be a pattern.
Nope circut city is only a 14 day return policy. lol Looks like your getting another ps3. My sons laser crashed on his yesterday he has played it 2 weeks (he was playing call of duty 4). To the person asking about how to contact sony. Go to Sony.com and com and somewhere will say support and contact us. The number will be there. There is no fixing it and if its under 90 days its a new replacement. If its over 90 its a refurb. So better hurry. They will send you a new box w/ prepaid shipping and you send it back ups (tracking) Then your new one will come. Sucks you have to wait for it but hey at least they are sending out new ones no questions asked.. hope this helps...
BluRay Diode dead , solution warrenty to sony or send it in for service

OMG... My ps3 stopped reading disc. It's a 1st gen console, 80 gig that I purchased back in 2007. I tried almost eveything. What should I do now?
Please help, alegend231@yahoo.com
i had similar problem and i just fixed this with the help of ps3 repair guide.
It was the cable that went from my bluray drive to the console that was
being pushed. I removed the cable and reseated the cable (be damned
careful if you try this DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REPAIR WITHOUT THE PHOTO
ILLUSTRATED GUIDE.. You have to lift a plastic flange and slide the
cable out. I broke this flange and figured out that it holds the cable
through compression and wedged it back on. So try not to break yours
Here are a few things you might like to try to get your games working again:
- If you notice that it is say one or two particular games that don't work, then you may have a dirty or scratched game disk. Use a microfiber cloth dipped in lukewarm water with a little bit of dishwashing detergent, clean the disk, then leave it to dry.
- Sometimes you may experience a dirty laser lens; clean it using a cotton bud dipped in rubbing alcohol.
- More often than not it is actually a problem with your Blu-Ray drive that is causing your PS3 not to read games properly. You may have to replace the laser lens in your drive in order to get the drive working again correctly. Visit the following link to see a video about how to test your Blu-Ray drive to see if it's working, as well as how you can fix your drive in the event of it being broken, with an easy PS3 not reading games fix.
HAS ANYONE TRIED OTHER DISC'S LIKE A DIVX MOVIE OR DVD. IF IT READS THESE ITS NOT THE BLUE RAY DRIVE IN THE PS3 ITS A MEMORY ISSUE CORRUPTION. IF SYSTEM NOT SHUT DOWN PROPERLY AS IF JSUT FLIPS SWITCH IN BACK OR JUST UNPLUGS OR EVEN UPDATES NOT FINISHING CA CAUSES UPDATE.. COMPUTER SCIENCE DORK.. SO ANYWAYS MY BROTHER HAS A 40 GB JUST DID A FULL SYSTEM FORMAT AND SYSTEM RESTORE FIXED THIS ISSUE FOR NOW.. TRY THIS BEFORE SENDING TO SONY!
my PS3 80g won't load or read the games

I had my playstation 3 console in march 2008 it is a 40gb version and then in december after one night of playing gta iv the next day when i turned it on it owuld not load up the discs so i phoned sony and they DO NOT SEND OUT NEW PS3 CONSOLES they send out reconditioned consoles which are about the same age as your ps3 console i have now had my ps3 refurbished console for 36 days and no problems at the moment so if it dies again on me then i will be leaving sony and going to microsoft
I just posted this on the have the same problem page - my solution is easy. I had the same issue, wouldn't read any games. I ended up sending it to www.videogame911.com and they fixed it no prob. Haven't had an issue since.
Had the same problem after updating to firmware 2.60 and playing Call of Duty World at War was very close to sending it to Sony with their $150 service fee (not covered anymore by warranty) So I had to tinker a little first I removed the 80GB hard drive and placed it in my laptop as a secondary disk drive went under disk management (running VISTA) and turned it on line then long formatted it using NTFS. FYI the PS3 can't use NTFS so after the format I removed the NTFS partition and left the drive in the RAW format and placed it back in the PS3 again. conduct a hard reboot by holding the Power Button down for 10 seconds (til it beeped and powered down again) turned it back on and I back to playing COD again
Side note I have 2 PS3's and after firmware update 2.60 and playing COD WAW they both died as I write this I am formatting the HDD for the 2nd PS3 on my laptop. If it works again I will try to install a 340GB hard drive in one of them
my ps2 did tht so i tore it apart and found out that the plastic circle thing was stuck and wasent holding the disk aging the spinner it had nothing to do with the laser
go to gamesal two games freeadditiontop and replace the system with a new one for free and youll get and
put in a lazer lens cleaner the same prblem happended to me but when i put my lazer lens cleaner in the playstation t read the game
OK this isn't a guaranteed fix by any means, and my lack of hardware safety paid off, but I wanted to give my account as to what happened to me tonight (11/6/2008). I have had the same problem as everyone else (i.e. system stopped reading disks with the little swirl in the upper right corner with no game load) - full access to my downloads just no disk reads. anyways, I called Sony and they gave me the whole line of sending it in with receipt proof of purchase date. Well, my wife purchased it in cash for xmas in 2007 and I have no way of finding the receipt (no credit card or debit card history to track it at Walmart). I decided to browse through every posting I could find to try to locate a simple solution, but they all seem to say i am screwed. I figured if i was this far up the creek with my newly formed 'paperweight' of a system I would try some risky things out. I figured I had a dust problem (mowed my lawn with the windows open - dirt ***** outside my media room - this summer and I recall the whole room being full of S#$% when I was done, so i could only assume my noobness led to a system full of dust). Tonight I blew into the cd bay (no dust can all manual) and used a Q-Tip and just moved it around the inside (risky I am sure so don't do this unless you are sure you want to take the full risk; I am not a hardware safety guru by any means- i would only suggest don't just jam the q-tip in violently - be gentle). No real dust appeared, but I figured what the heck, it is broken anyhow at this point. At this point I shut system off completely from the back. I turned the whole PS3 on it's side (standing vertically) and restarted it. I inserted Star Wars TFU and as honest as I can possibly be on a forum...it is workign again!??!?!?!?! I am true when I say it has been a whole week now since it stopped reading disks, calls into SONY, hours reading through forums at night, and close to either dropping $150 to SONY or just going out to buy a new system for $400, but the risk I took of sticking a q-tip in, blowing into the cd bay (old school NES trick) and turning the system verticle with a full shut down and restart worked. I am not saying this is the end all solution but I wanted to share with everyone that it worked for me...maybe it will work for you...even just one person. REMEMBER this is a complete idiot risk I took and it could have turned my PS3 into a completely destroyed piece of hardware, so again do not try this unless you are sure you can cope with an entire loss if if doesn't go your way. I just figured trying a very manual and simple process of risky cleaning with success may save a few of you a few hundred dollars. I mean if you send you PS3 to SONY and they charge you $ to blow dust out - that is like an electrician charging you a high cost hourly rate just to twist a light bulb on a socket you thought was defective because the bulb was loose. Ok enough of my rant...good luck to you all and I hope this helps anyone.

Your blue ray lens needs either cleaning or replacing, maxwell as brought out a blueray lens cleaner disc recommended for even ps3 consoles. If that doesn't work though you have to send it to sony or approved sony repairs centres. Search on google for ps3 repair centres near your area.
yeah you can by getting an external HDD. transfer the files from the 40GB to the external HDD and then plug it into the 80GB. and then just copy all the files from the external HDD to the 80GB PS3.
(yeah takes time but its the only solution since they don't allow the consoles to connect together.)

It has to be the laser or the drive itself. We are listed on this site for repairs. If intersted email us for an estimate. xbox360fixer@verizon.net
