I have the same problem. It had been working fine for 7 months until yesterday morning. No damage like dropping on the floor or anything like that.

I can insert into and eject out any disk, game or dvd, but none is being read. The drive "clicks" just once and stops moving. Not sure it's a hardware failure or a driver crash.

I have purchased a 60 GB 2 Games Bonus Pack from Dubai Duty Free 5 weeks ago. Today while playing a game,it suddenly froze and after a reboot not reading any type of discs.I have made a quick search on web and noticed that there are a lot of people gaving the same problem. Formatting the system is also not a solution and it seems to be a hardware failure.

  • alperts Dec 26, 2007

My 60 BG brand-new (a few weeks) PS3 console froze during a game and after a reboot not reading any type of discs. I have made a quick search on web and noticed that many people are facing the same problem. It looks like a hardware problem.

this will be my second ps3 w/ cd drive problem not reading disks

  • jlmeredith13 Jan 08, 2008

My PS3 consol froze in the middle of game play, yet there was still sound but the game was frozen. Then as I tried to reboot the game consol, the consol would not recognize my disc, so I tried another video game, but it still was not recognized. I then put in a DVD and then a CD and neither was recognized.

  • archangelgtr Jan 10, 2008

I start to have the same problem 2 moths ago, at first it was rare, but lately i even had to tap with my fingers on top of the Disc Drive area for the blu-Ray Disc to load. And is only blu-ray, it reads CDs and DVDs just fine. I did notice that it makes a continous Clicking sound until the Loading bubble in the screen goes away. Just sent to Sony for a PS3 Replacement.

  • Gav_Jones Jan 11, 2008

Started last night when my son was playing Juiced. Game froze. He rebooted the PS3, and since then it doesn't read any disk (except occasionally reading music CDs). Tried formatting the system. Made no difference. This was an Xmas present so only a couple of weeks old now.

  • Sandbagger Jan 12, 2008

We were playing rock band and were selecting a new song when we got a disc error message. The dvd has not worked since for blue ray or any games. I am waiting to hear from Sony (they promised a response withing 72 hours). Only had it since Christmas stopped working January 9, 2008. I updated the software, as Sony website suggested, no real change.

  • Anonymous Jan 14, 2008

Same problem, will not read disk, just stopped; reboot no help....stuck. Searched web, still no fixes and no word from

    Sony.

hi, when u send in yr 40gb for repair and its under 90 days, do they send u a new console? In canada?
    thnx

  • Anonymous Feb 05, 2008

I had my 1st PS3 since march 07, it stopped reading PS3 games before xmas, it still played Blue ray discs. I called SONY who were happy to exchange the console as long as I faxed Proof-of purchase to them. Unlucky for me I couldn't find it. I went back to Tesco with the console and no proof-of-purchase & Tesco said they couldn't do anything without the receipt!!

By law they are in their rights to do this.

I went home & only played Dvds on the PS3. On January 29th, I called SONY again and asked if Registrating the PS3 was proof-of-purchase, and it is not! Then the man at SONY looked on his computer & gave me the answer I was looking for.

It turned out that for SONY to send me a new console all I needed to provide them with was a land-line number & this doesn' have to be your own number!!

So Happy Days the courier knocked my door 2 days later with my new PS3, in exchange for my faulty PS3.

I have now registrated my new PS3 & everyone at home is HAPPY!!!!

I am located in Turkey and have purchased my ps3 two months ago from Germany. I had to give my invoice at the customs to be able to get the tax free back.

2 days ago my ps3 suddenly stoped reading any kind of disks after playing several Blue Ray Disks. I also read several posting on the internet with the same problem, I would appreciate if you can suggest me a way out of this,

my ps3 does nt read disc???????

  • mojoasnore Feb 20, 2008

I'm located in atlantic canada. i've had my ps3 for 50 days. I was playing nhl 08 and a disc read error came up. not it won't read any games blu ray movies, etc. contacted sony the said to get the new update 2.10. will that work?. from what i've been reading it will probly make it worse. just wondering if someone has found a way around this issue without sending it back to sony. i've also seen there that some people who have had this issue happen with the ps3 before 90 days that they received a new one straight up insted of a refurbished one. also has anyone had this problem resolved in this part of the country.

    thanks

  • corie lai Mar 09, 2008

just got a loan of my friends ps3 in 60g model last night. Played Oblivion for about three hours before it presented a read error. Then the dashboard comes up but no discs of any kind will read.

  • Sick-o-sony Mar 09, 2008

I have the same problem (sorry for the me-to's but it may help in the class-action lawsuit). Bought it at costco. The first one worked for 6 days. It died while reading a music file in Rock Band. I took it back to Costco, and got it replaced. Now this one lasted 6 days and died again -- also reading a new music file in Rock Band. I wonder if rockband is the cause, or just a coincidence. At any rate, I smell a 'suit brewing. Watch out Sony, the bad publicity is coming...

  • Anonymous Mar 09, 2008

    WILL NOT READ ANY DISC

  • jwlynas Mar 10, 2008

Ok, just to show the variety of games it does this with, Mine died while i was playing Dynasty Warriors 6. Not COD4, not Ratchet and Clank...

gah, I got a PS3 because this kind of thing wasn't supposed to happen...least my 360 lasted a year before it had a meltdown...

Have had this console two months...

I have tried various games, cd's and blu-rays, resetting, vacuuming the vents (an option it gives in the help manuel) in case the disc lens was just dusty...Nothing.

I was playing Army of 2 when the game froze. I pressed the Ps button and to go back to the main xmb menu and noticed the Army of 2 disc icon was not showing. I ejected the disc and re-inserted it to no avail. I proceeded to put in movies, music cd's and still no icon. I called Sony and he instructed me to "hard reset" by turning off the power in the back of the system and turning it while holding down the I/O button. It went throught thte hard reset menu but still, no disc. He then asked me to hold down the eject button for 10 seconds. This apparently resets the blue ray drive, that didn't work either. This is extremely dissapointing as my ps3 is 2 months old!!!!

Well, they are sending me a box, i.e. rlod for my 360, to package everything up and send it to them. This sucks because I am having trouble backing up my purchases from the online store. I think we are experiencing a "New DRE" I guess the $100.00 I saved on this unit was applied towards a cheaper internal blue ray player ugh....

  • dcostinett Mar 16, 2008

Same problem with the PS3 not reading any discs. In the middle of playing Star Wars The Complete Saga the player rejected the Blu Ray disc and it now won't recognize any discs at all.

  • GRANNYTRISH1 Mar 19, 2008

yes i bought this game for my 7 year old grandson for Christmas at Walmart he played it once and it haven't worked since say it cant read disc . who would think that sony want help say i need my receipt hell i don't know where i put it it brand new in the box and came with a blue ray movie so i stuck with this 400.00 dollar game and games that don't work. i end up buying the wii game and he loves it but if anyone knows how to fix this game without sending it to sony for 150.00 which they should be ashamed of themselves. with all the people complaining with the same problems help me if you can thanks grannytrish.

  • Moneyxl Mar 21, 2008

Same here, I was playing Rainbox 6 Vegas 2 and it said something like "the disc you're using is dirty, pls press the PS button" this was weird cause I had not taken the game outta my PS since I bought it 2 days ago, no finger print no nothing, I decided to try other games and they didn't play even though everything else works, I'm gonna call the store tomorrow, my PS3 is just 7 weeks old.

  • DJ312 Mar 22, 2008

I was playing college hoops 2k8, it froozed then when i restarted the game it didn't read any of my dics anymore... how could i fix this

  • Moneyxl Mar 27, 2008

Update, I took my PS3 back to the store and got a new one but I had a receipt.

  • Anonymous Mar 28, 2008

I have the no reading problem as well.

    Here is the solution.

Go on every site you can, (amazon, best buy, etc.) On the comments page tell what happened and plead people not to buy PS3. It's the ONLY way to fix this. Sony will learn not to put out such a bad product.

  • Anonymous Mar 31, 2008

I got a 40GB PS3 for Christmas, and a couple weeks later it stopped reading any kind of disc. I read on a message board that a screw inside could be loose, so I took it back to Target where it was purchased (my boyfriend purchased a 3 year warranty for it) and they swapped it out for me in just a few minutes.

Well now I'm having kind of the same problem again... a couple nights ago the system stopped reading games, or when it would it would give me the startup error. I was lucky if I was able to play. But every time I turned my system on I would have to go through the same thing: restarting the system, ejecting and reinserting the game until it finally read. Well now it won't read PS3 games or Bluray movies at all. It reads DVDs fine (but I haven't tried any PS2 games). It must be the Bluray drive this time but I'm tired of trying to find ways to fix it myself, so I'm taking it back to Target tomorrow for them to exchange it.

  • George Manu
    George Manu Apr 03, 2008

Update: Well it took 3 weeks to get my PS3 back because the 40gb was on back order. They sent me a brand new CECCH01 (Japanese Version with different motherboard) They also gave me a 90 warranty on the new replacement. From the looks of of it, people are having issues after playing for extended periods of time. I plan on "burning in" my new ps3 I got to see if I have any disc reading problems. I hope not, otherwise I'll have to pay $150.00 to get it fixed after the warranty.

If you have this problem, please keep a copy of your receipt!! I begged Fred Meyer to give me a copy and they complied. If not for them the cost would be 468.25 + 150.00 for repairs-$618.25 for a 40gb PS3? Yikes

  • Anonymous Apr 06, 2008

  • TOEKNEE47 Apr 16, 2008

ITS NOT DIRTY , IT HAS TO DO WITH 2 THINGS
FIRST IS THE WEAK BLUERAY DIODES THAT SONY PUT IN CHEAPER PS3 BY CHEAP MAKERS, THE SECOND AND ITS RUMMORED IS THAT A FIRMWARE DEFECT CAUSED IT,,, SONY IS CURRENTLY LOOKING AT THIS ON THE DOWN TO NOT INCITE LAWSUITS BY RECOGNIZING,, IF U ARE UNDER WARRANTY CALL THEM TO REPLACE IF U HAVE A RECEIPT ,,IF NOT THE DRIVE IS REPLACEABLE TAKES AVERAGE g 30MINS,,, PART# KES-400AAA ON EBAY 60$ LOOK IT UP.

  • alex416 May 11, 2008

40gb ps3, stopped reading discs today, was working fine yesterday...
was playing GTA IV, now i put in a disc and it just makes some weird sound every like 2 seconds like its trying to read the disc. other than that the ps3 is working okay...what can i do about this ?

  • ToNySTeChNo May 18, 2008

i was playing guitar hero when all of a sudden a message popped up saying disk ejected please reinsert disk. The disk was not ejected so i restarted the ps3 and since have not been able to get any disk to read. Does replacing the hard drive fix this problem??

  • Anonymous May 20, 2008

Yup same thing happened to me. It's the 80gb model and it was made in july 2008. I got it as a gift last christmas and not even five months in, it stopped reading any disks. I was playing COD4 when it just frooze, I tried pressing the PS button, nothing. I've then tried pressing and holding down the front button on the PS3, again no reponse. I then had no choice but to turn it off by switching the main power in the back, I know it said this in the manual not to but like I said I had no other choice. From there on, it didnt want to read any disks. Even tried reformating it with no avail. I really lost faith in the brand SONY. What a overhype, overprice, underminded product.

  • 1Laith Jun 11, 2008

    Hi,

just adding my case to the list of others...

    PS3 bought on 25/05/2008

    80GB, NTSC-J, CECHE06.

Only opened it early yesterday 11/06/2008.

Inserted Folklore, played for a couple of hours after installing update and game data... beautiful.

the update provided the theme feature, so we used a usb flash disk and an sd card to look at some files and set up wallpaper.

that all worked fine and continues to do so.. but we noticed later that discs won't load. The disc loading icon (the one that looks like the Ubisoft logo) appears on the top right corner.. and stays there... but the discs are not read...

We tried, switching off/on, even leaving it unplugged for hours, ejecting, holding eject for 10 seconds, holding eject longer than 10 seconds, inserting different types of discs, changing different settings, Quick Formatting, full formatting (which took around 5 hours), inserting disc after pressing the PS button, connecting usb flash disk, inserting an sd card....

Everything works fine, except loading discs...

Note: the update was not removed after the quick or full install. The game had also worked fine after the update... but does not do so anymore.

The discs are all perfectly spotless(and scratchless).

    The disc loading problem persists...

    My detailed account..

  • Golfdog12 Jun 16, 2008

yah, I got my 80 gb PS3 in january and a couple of days ago while playing Skate, the game just froze. I restarted it and from there on out my PS3 will not read any disks whatsoever. I payed 500 bucks for a system that should not do this and look what happened. Sony really disappointed me.

  • juiceman11 Jun 16, 2008

I was playing MLB 2008 and the game froze, I restarted it and the network icon is in blue but no game is read when I insert the disc into the drive, movies also...what's going on?

  • Ben_Wraith Jun 18, 2008

I was watching a Blu-ray disc when my 20GB PS3 froze playback, and now it doesn't seem to be reading any disks at all. I thought it might might have been due to leaving it on running Folding@home too much but other people seem to have this problem....I've tried restarting and resetting a few times.

  • Ben_Wraith Jun 19, 2008

Did I write 20GB in my post? What the hell was I thinking, I meant 40GB too.

  • Anonymous Jun 19, 2008

Just playing Metal Gear 4, during the 3rd act it starts doing this disc sign/question mark thing and freezes up, and now it won't read ANY disc. I wouldn't mind, but the console isn't even mine! And I can't finish the game now either! ARGH I'l try the re-set of the laser thing but failing that i'll have bad news for the owner

  • Anonymous Jun 21, 2008

I had to take back my first sytem out of the box it did this. I have had my new system since Nov 07 and now it is doing the exact same thing as everyone else on this page! I guess the solution is to contact them and prove you bought it and hope they send a new one what did you guys do about your memory files??????

  • Anonymous Jun 23, 2008

was playing mlb the show on my friends ps3 and then it did not load up properly the next day. Took the disc out and then put it back in, finally loaded.. played for about an hour, then went to quit and it shut down funny. now it won't recognize any games/cds/any discs.. something possibly with the laser eye?? i'm not sure

  • Anonymous Jun 28, 2008

I got mine last christmas and after 6 months it stop reading discs. Sony pissed me off for this one. I just got the coffin for my ps3 last week, so I should be getting my replacement soon. I guess the batch of 40 gb ps3s had bad blu ray drives. Sony doesn't feel sorry for us because they lost 3.3 billion dollars. The reason was because the first ps3s launched were sold below production cost. Sony tried to sastisfy us, but no cigar.

  • Anonymous Jun 28, 2008

The exanct same thing happened to me. Enerything works but when a disk is inserted, nothing happens. I spoke to sony and they said that the Blu-Ray Ioide broke because i don't put it on stand-by when i am turning it off.

  • godrich730 Jun 28, 2008

everytime i put in a game the ps3 console says "an error occurred during the start operation" (80010514) put bought in christmas gift of 2007, i also put a new game in and it said the same thing with the error.

  • Anonymous Jul 10, 2008

Playing MLB the 08 the show. Froze on me. turned off back on doesnt read anymore. I am very very disappointed and will never buy sony again.

  • sharkzor Jul 11, 2008

I got a 40GB ps3 for christmas, and it worked fine up until about 2
weeks ago, and now it wont read any disc at all. Some bogus error pops
up every time. I've tried turning the system off on the back of the
system, unplugging it, turning it on and off, turning my router on and
off suspecting it might be the internet connection messing with my
system, who knows. I was also playing COD4 like most people on here it
seems, but it also shut off when i was trying to watch 30 days of night
on blu-ray. I don't know if my dad still has the receipt, highly doubt
it, but it is less than a year old, so hopefully they can do something
about it at sony. This one was bought in Canada at a Wal-Mart or something.

  • Anonymous Jul 11, 2008

ya same here! was playin the show 08. the announcer went silent then @ the loading menu. it froze! after that i turned it off from the back, then it would start off but didnt read a single disc!
    terrible!

  • Anonymous Jul 11, 2008

My sons PS3 stop reading PS3 discs a couple of weeks ago, ok with standard dvds. Rang Sony Helpdesk was given an exchange date, two days before the exchange date, received a call to say they had no replacement consoles, I was then given another date for the exchange, my friend stayed in all day waiting for the the courier (08:00 - 18:00), when I rang Sony heldesk again at 17:50 I was informed they had no consoles and we would have to wait until the 23rd July although this is not guaranteed. Sucks....,

  • Ashnosferatu Jul 14, 2008

Yep Mine has done the same, was playing GTA iv last night when it froze, I tried to quit the game and the screen went blank. I managed to turn the system off via the switch at the back, but when I restarted the console, it would not read any discs at all. I think this issue might be due to an over heating problem with the disc drive, as admittedly the system had be on for a while as it was doing the whole folding@home thing. I think the problem is more specifically to do with the actual laser within the disc drive, as the system seems to understand the a disc is in the drive, as the little loading bubble appears at the top right hand corner of the screen, but the drive fails to read the the disc. it just sits there with the little bubble flashing. If I was to take an educated guess at as to what has happened, I would say that the disc drive has got to hot and melted one of the wires attached to the laser, but with out taking it apart i cannot say for sure, and being that I have only had the console for less then month, and it is still in warranty, I don't intend to. my advice to anyone with a similar problem would be to take your console back to the store where you bought it, and either get a refund, or let them take it back for repair.

  • dbrunodna Jul 21, 2008

Why the hell doesn't sony fix with issue with some official press release?? Furthermore, I can't believe that magazines and game news shows aren't reporting on this problem (X-play anyone??) They were all over the firmware issues with version 2.40. Mine just started doing this. I have had mine since launch and it's very discouraging to have to shell out more money and wait weeks just to get this fixed! Bad Sony, just BAD! The console isn't even 2 years old and already it needs to be fixed? This is a complete ripoff to the consumers which amounts to FRAUD! THE PRESS NEEDS TO BE REPORTING THIS BECAUSE THE PROBLEM IS REALLY MORE WIDESPREAD THAN JUST A FEW CONSOLES. I guess I have a $600 paperweight at this point.

  • Anonymous Jul 22, 2008

had the prob b4 too sent it to asda they sent it back and told me there was noting wrong with it even no there was but i only think thet sed that so they could charge me witch they did wa**ers 3 months later same problem with it DOWN WITH SONY

I was playing fifa, and the commentary went, and sometimes, it wont let me get past half time. I switcjhhed it of fat the switch, and put it back on, it has been doing this for a wee while nbow.

Today it let me to the loading screen and just died.

I put a normal dvd in and that worked alright.

Then i put it a blueray disc and it did not read that.

I tried putting fifa 08 back in, but no luck, i bought it in about january, and im gonna take it back to comet and see what they say/give me.

Blimey, what's going on with Sony! Poor quailty internals I guess. My PS3 Just packed up too. It won't recognise any disc that goes in to it. Thanks to this thread, I got Sony's number and called them, the unit is only 4 months old. They were helpfull, I have a replacement unit due to be delivered in 4 days time....... Lets hope that lasts another 4 months! By the way, I'm hooked on Warhawk, its the only game I've been playing in 4 months but as some people have mentioned, its not the game that does it, its just pot luck as to when the unit decides to give up.

ya about 4- 5onths after THE SECOND ONE mine wont read discs either ive tried everything save tear it a part how is this solved????

  • Anonymous Aug 19, 2008

Mine packed up while watching a blu-ray film, it froze and now it won't read any of my games either. I've restarted a number of times but it just won't load and no sound will even come from it. I've had it less then 3 months and I'm very very angry.

  • dusty22 Sep 04, 2008

Okay, well i was out at my cottage for a couple weeks, and when i got home, my brother (who stayed home during that time) did an update on my ps3 and now it doesn't read any of my games.

Ive waited to see if maybe an update might come out to fix the problem, but there hasn't been one yet.

What do I do to fix this, ive waited over a month and I don't know what to do.

  • brian328 Sep 08, 2008

start error ps3 cant read disk. waiting to hear from sony. ps3 is 8 months old.

  • firefly22 Sep 09, 2008

I bought my PS3 used about 15 months ago. Before that, I'm guessing it was at least 4 months old. I have been playing COD4 almost exclusively for 10 months. Over the last two days my system has gone from random freeze ups, to audio dropping out and the game sometimes not being recognized, to no blue ray recognition at all but still dvd recognition, to now no disc recognition at all. Discs still eject in and out okay though. I think when the laser begins to die the power drops just like a flashlight dying. It takes the most power to recognize and run blue ray discs and less to run dvd or audio discs. But eventually it totally burns out and no discs will work.

I am sending it back to Sony. Fortunately I have an upgraded hard drive in there, so I'm just going to swap the old one back in before sending it back, so I don't think I'll lose any data.

I did see that there was some site called videogame911.com that claims it will fix my ps3 within 24 hours of receiving it and for less money. Still, I'm not sure it would actually be much less and I'd rather have actual Sony certified parts even though they are probably the same. Anyone else try these guys?

I don't know what you all did but I opened my PS3 for what I thought was going to be a quick cleaning and just put this **** back together and get to playing games again.
When my PS3 did break I try to send it in but I was going to be fined anyways because I didn't have a recite. So I did what anyone would and tried to fix it my self.
Turns out the problem is the blue ray is broken(I thought this **** was state of the art technology) and now I'm stuck trying to find 149 dollars and plus tax to try and get this bull send in and fixed. I really hate it how badly this system actually cam out to be after I spent 600 dollars buying the 80g, I get nothing in return but paying the quarter of the price for a problem that seems to be all to often found.
If anyone knows how to fix this problem with little or no money please post here or e-mail me at
    dusankukic@sbcglobal.net

Was on Call od Duty: World at War , game froze and ps3 would not turn off. I turned off ps3 by switch at the back and turned back on, disc was recognised,I started the game and message popped up stating ' The Start operation could not be done ' . Left the ps3 off overnight , thought it could have been temporary , next morning tried series of other discs and games but system was not even recognising there was a disc inside it.Everything still works fine on ps3 except discs do not read. Currently trying to find reciept then I am phoning SONY and explaining problem. Hopefully the problem gets solved for all of us. I'll message again soon. System is original 40GB ps3 bought last Christmas.

funny the exact same s__t happend to me with little big planet, today. i bought my ps3 march 2007 so warrenty is up, im pissed off, i wont buy another sony product and im selling my stocks i have in sony if the dont fix this

  • BiGuP Dec 01, 2008

Im going to shock everyone now...I HAVE THE SAME BA***RD PROBLEM!!!!!!! i was playing on my Fallout3 last night (30/11/08), first it froze, i switched the system off from the back cos the front button wasnt working, turned it back on, now it wont load up ANY games, ANY dvds and ANY music CD's. i use to get problems with my PSP, i had to replace it 3 TIMES in 1 year!!!! i dont have any problems with it anymore as i sold the lump of turd. - best thing i did. BUT...for a £500 high tech top of the range console to break down in less than 1 year is absolutley ridicilous!! SONY - get a grip man!! i have an Xbox 360 due to the PS3 being pushed back - NEVER had a problem with it!! EVER!!!!!!!!!! - i thought SONY and Microsoft were major rivals?!?!?! Sony's giving it to Microsoft on a plate if you ask me. My mum bought my PS3 in Italy about this time last year, iv asked for the receipt but she cant find it...GREAT!! And even if SONY did offer to replace this one with a new one, why the hell should i accept a reconditioned one after paying all of that cash?!? So you will have paid the full whack to get a second hand one!!! - Not interested pal.

Bottom line... tomorrow morning im going to the papers, i also have an uncle that works for the local news...told him about it and told him that there are SHITLOADS of people with the same problem, he's agreed to put it on the news in hope that "we", the PS3 customers will get some sort of reply from Sony, and get some sort of way of fixing it without having to run around trying to prove that i had actually bought the console and maybe a little compensation for not even warning us of this problem.

For all those in the North West of England, keep your eyes peeled on to the news for the next couple of nights as we may need some instances where this problem is happening to other people, even though this web page is more than enough!!!!!!

    Looking forward to the outcome!!

I have been given a number by argos in the uk. It is a number to Sony and they will run a diagnostics check over the phone first but if they can't help they will come and pick up the console and take it away for repair if it is still under guarantee.
    the number is 08705 998877.
    hope this helps some people.

Today that s**t box froze when it automatically signed me out at the loading screen on Cod world at war and it will not read any discs. I tried putting a different disc in and it did not read that either. I think that im going to go and pick up the x box 360. That is what all my friends have. DO NOT EVER BUY THESE TINGS!!! The x box costs more when you add up game fees and live and all that other stuff but it is worth it in the end.

  • Paul Sisson Dec 22, 2008

You Wont believe this!!! My 80 gb PS3 will not read any disc as of today. It is only 13 days out of warranty and never really used. I got 5 blue ray movies for free with the purchase and have only opened one. I opened the box and inspected and cleaned it but no change. after reading around on the web I see that this an issue. I suggest that everyone here in the states file a complaint with the BBB (Better Business Bureau) at www.bbb.org it is easy and I will be filng mine after this post. when I spoke to sony they acted like my problem was isolated to my case even after asking them about this specific problem. Shame on you sony. I will not buy anymore sony products unless I see this issue resolved.

  • Badger1889 Dec 23, 2008

  • chad131985 Dec 25, 2008

This is Chad from TheHappygeek.com. (I'm a web designer and local geek) My 40gb ps3 broke about 6 months after buying it. The laser stopped
reading. So I searched the net for a repair facility other than sony as
I knew they were overpriced, they’re responsible for a bad system, and
the repair would take at least 2 weeks. I found a place called
videogame911.com. They claim that they fix broken ps3s. I wanted to fix
it and give it to a business partner of mine as a christmas present.
Today is Christmas, he opened it up, and not only was the laser not
fixed, but The $60 call of duty world at war game that I bought him is
now stuck in the ps3. Now, the laser was broken before I sent it out,
NOW THE DISK MOTOR IS BROKEN!!! So now I’m out $130 and my PS3 is
broken even more ON CHRISTMAS. Remember my experience when choosing a
    repair facility. Happy HOLIDAYS!

i hace the same problem too...my baby sis took out my fifa08

and now i am trying to put it bak it nd it wont even enter....normally the ps3

should take it in automatically but i have to push mines in manually and

it wont even read any disc...but if it isnt reading what should do is first have a USb and save any of your important games save or what so ever then go to settings and then system settings and then restore ps3..it should tell

you that every will be deleted but since u had save it on the usb u could get the files anytime...but yea that should work..i am currently doing that to mines and it takes atleast 2 hours nd some mins..but most deffinately

your ps3 should start working...if it doesn't call sony entertainment..then chose the repair ps3 nd u should have ur receipt..i dont have mine and if u dont u will have to pay 149 dollars for them 2 give u a new ps3 or refurbish your...... if u know of any other means for me fixing ma ps3 so the disc to go in..please let me know..lol

  • hard2handle Feb 02, 2009

Hey 2nd post on the prob. Forgot to add that I called sony, as well. They told me that they would let me send it back and that my warranty was still good and they would send me an e-mail with in 24hrs. Three days later it hadn't come, so I called sony again. This time they said that my warranty was void because of time and they would charge me for the repairs if I wanted them. That's BS! It's bad enogh I lose the info, and now they want to charge me?! If anone wants to go in on a lawsuitfordefective products I'm all in. They knew their products are defective and are still sending them out. Just look at this site, there are at least 50 of us on this site with the problem. Sony can go to hell if they think I'm getting a ps4. I just glad to know that I am not alone. Congrats to the one of you I saw that got a warranty extension. The rest of us arejust screwed I guess.

I have the same problem the rest of you are having. I had bought the system a few days before Christmas in 2007 and last night it stopped working, conveniently now that the warranty is out of date. When I talked to Sony, the guy just kept telling me over and over that my warranty was expired, even when I told him that a lot of people seem to be having the same issue! They're ripping people off!

CONSOLE DOSENT READ DISC OR ERROR IN STARTING PROCESS! HELP ME!

  • tiny771365 Mar 11, 2009

I of course am having the same problem as everyone is. I thought the lens was dirty at first so I cleaned it and it worked after that. The problem is that I would have to stick the lens cleaner in first and then the PS3 game in order for it to work. I'm now to the point where that isn't working either. I called Sony and spoke to 2 different people because I do not feel we should have to pay $162 when there is an obvious problem with their systems. The declined to provide me with the numbers of calls they get about the same issue. I've already sent in a complaint to the national Better Business Bureau. I've also sent emails to Dateline NBC, Today Show and MSNBC in hopes that they would investigate this problem.

Everyone please do the same thing!! If we get enough of us complaining to the BBB and these national TV stations, sooner or later they will do something about it. I'm not against paying to get it fixed, but I refuse to pay that much money!!

I have the same problem with this Sony PS3. This is the second issue I had since I bought this thing is Dec07. The first issue was when I opened the unit. Did not work, so I had to send it in. Then I I only played 2 games and watched 1 moive as I lacked a HDTV. All about 40hrs of total play on this unit. That is it. I have not abused this system and now it is out of warranty. I just send it in to have it repaired for $160. BULL!!!

AFTER INSTALLING 2.60 FIRM WARE UPDATE WHICH REALLY IS NOT A CHOICE LIKE SONY SAYS YOU CAN'T PLAY ONLINE IF U DON''T THUS THEY FORCE U TO UPDATE. WELL IT WAS PLAYING JUST FINE BUT AFTER THE UPDATE MY BLUERAY PLAYER WONT READ ANY DISK ANYMORE ITS JUST KEEP SPINNING IN THE UPPER RIGHT CONNOR OF THE SCREEN. WELL CALLED SONY AND THEY SAID DID U READ THE DISCLAIMER UPDATE IS UR CHOICE AND IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO UR PS3 ITS UR FAULT. ITS REALLY NOT MY CHOICE WERE FORCE TO DO IT AND JUST THINK THEY WERE THE ONES WHO WROTE AND PUT THE BAD PATCH OUT THEIR BUT NOT RESPONSIBLE. I LOOK LIKE SONY CREATES THESE BAD PATCHES TO MAKE MONEY BECAUSE ITS MORE THAN A YEAR THAT I HAD THIS PS3 AND NOW THEY WANT 149.00 TO REPAIR IT. MAN THATS ALOT OF MONEY IF THEY KILL 1 MILLION PS3 THEY WILL MAKE 149 MILLION. I FEEL THEY SHOULD FIX THESE FOR FREE. WHAT WE HAVE HERE IS A FAILOR FOR THEM TO COMMUNICATE WITH THEIR CUSTOMERS AND MAYBE WE SHOULD LOOK INTO A LAWYER OR A LAW FIRM WHO WILL TAKE SONY ON WITH A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT TO COMPENSATE US BY FIXING OUR PS3 FREE AND MAYBE MONEY FOR THE STRESS AND LOST OF TIME RIGHT. THEY DID IT TO MICROSOFT WHEN THEY SENT A BAD SOFTWARE OUT AND KILLED ALOT OF XBOXES 360 THEY FINNLY HAD TO CONFESS AND FIX THEM FREE. IS THEIR ANY GOOD LAWYER WHOM WANT TO MAKE A GOOD NAME FOR THEM SELF AND MAYBE SOME GOOD MONEY? PLS HELP US WE PAID TO MUCH FOR THESE PS3 FOR SONY TO DESTROY THEM AND RIP US OFF FOR MORE MONEY. THEY SOULD GO TO JAIL FOR ROBBERY.

    it doesnt read the disk

  • hard2handle Mar 29, 2009

I had the same problem, but it's not the software patch, it's themachine itself. The arm for the blueray reader is prone to breaking. Ihave contacted several repair shops who say it is a common problem. I have been thru two PS3's and both failed to read the discs. The second was a replacement. Now they want to charge me for repairs as well. I agree with the lawsuit plan and would jump on board should one be filed. Sony knew that their product was defective and shipped anyway, now we pay the price. Look at the site, over 200 with the same problem. One here, has been thru 4 Playstations. FOUR! That's wrong. I paid $600 for a paper wieght. They lost my business.

  • lcompy Mar 29, 2009

Out of no where, 2 days ago, my PS3 will not load a disc. All I get is a spinning disc icon in the upper right corner of the screen.

Will not load games or blu-ray discs. What's up with that ????????

  • djang27 Mar 30, 2009

Wow, my PS3 stopped reading PS3 dics and blu-rays as well; leaving me only able to play most PS2 games on a still shiny PS3! And to find sooo many other people with the very same problem in the first five minutes of researching the issue is a huge blow to my faith in Sony. I've been a loyal sony fan since the PSone hit the scene but I have to say my future as Sony's long-time costumer has been hugely jeaprodized by Sony's complete disregard for customer satisfaction!! I'm definitely on board for a CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT. The situation in RIDICULOUS for lack of a better word......

Game has stopped reading ps3 games. You can play games loaded on the hard drive but won't play discs. The lens cleaner disc does load and appears to work however does not correct the problem. This PS3 is just out of warrenty.

Sony PS3 stopped reading PS3 games and Blu-Ray Movies. It worked fine last weekend. We did not use it during the week and suddenly it no longer works

  • joedurkin May 02, 2009

PS3 Sucks. Sony makes good products, but the PS3 is not one of them. DO NOT PAY $150 to have your PS3 repaired. I got mine fixed the first time it stopped reading discs. I had lost my receipt, legitimately, and had to spend 2 hours on the phone proving I bought the thing so they would fix it. Got a one time warranty courtesy repair. PS3 was still within one year old. Otherwise, I would have paid. HOWEVER...guess what...112 days later, same FLIPPING problem...and they want $150.00. I told them it makes no sense. This equates to half of a new game system and more than half the cost of a new PS3, so if I pay...90 days from now...Probably the same problem...and out of warranty again. WHAT A RACKET. SCREW THE MAN!!! Buy a different product.

I have the same problem kinda... I can play FIFA 08 when I get off work. I normaly play once a day. When I get started the system does fine. I turn it on and it works, during the game Andy Gray, who is the announcer for the game, gives his play by play. Then suddenly out of no where Andy Gray just stops talking. I can still play the game until half-time or when the game is over. When the game is over, I normaly want to play again but there is no menu at all for the game. I can't do a rematch or end the game. I restart the system and it tells me that there is no game in the system. It's really annoying. Any ideas?

I had the same problem twice with my playstation 3 and this is what I did I contacted the bbb and filled a complaint with them about sony. Then I paid the 150.00 for the second time to get it fixed again and then three months later I was contacted by sony and they gave me a check for 300.00 and also sent me a new playstation 3 the 80gb and told me if there was ever a problem with it they will fix it for free.If your having a problem with your ps3 not reading desk make sure you contact the bbb because paystation is trying to say that this doesn't happen alot and if your like me and looked online and I found thousands of people with this same problem so make sure you contact the bbb because the more complaints they get about this they will be forced to fix the problem like Xbox did.

I had this problem too. i found out that i was turning the ps3 off from the back.doing that crashes the hardrive making it not able to read the disk. call the PSN and ask for a new one. when u get the new one you should start turning the ps3 off by holding the ps button then hit "turn of the system". when the ps3 "beeps" and the blue and green light turns red, then turn it off from behind............the ps3 is just like a computer if u turn it off on the pc it will crash the hardrive. hopefully this should help.

PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE SENDING YOU PS3 FOR REPAIR

I had the same problem with my PS3 but found a simple solution.

With a game already inserted start by selecting a playable demo (I use PES 2009) then once it has started to load press the PS button and the disc icon should appear below quit game icon. Then simply select the disc icon and the game will play.

This has saved me a lot of money and I hope it works for you!

The ps3 has the disk drive on the top where dust and smoke can get into it when you leave it in vertical postion so the best thin to do is to leave it in the flat horizontal position. Now to fix the reading problem I tend to switch the back power button not the front green power button when the ps3 is still on. If you do this right the controller lights should be flashing, after you turn it back on it should read the disk now or if not just try again remember its the power button on the back and only when the ps3 is still on. You could go to system settings and put restore your ps3 settings but this might lead to you data being deleted. This problem occur because you put the disk in too early or you played on the system too long the previous time and also due to dust and smoke the builds up in your console. You should cover it with a grocery bag if you have it on vertical or uses a fan in your room. this will prevent dust entry

If your PS3 is starting to freeze, lag or won't load any game that means the hard drive is dying but don't be alarm its very easy to fix and at the same time you would be able to upgrade it. here is what you do.

1. first you need to have a SATA hard drive ( If ever you have an old laptop and have that SATA Hard Drive it would work if not just get a new one)
2. backup all your PS3 files from your old Hard Drive but this is not necessary in order to replace a the Hard Drive just for your game save files and etc.
3.after the backup or if you decided not to back up your files unplug the PS3 and open the plastic cover at the bottom of your PS3 and you should see 3 screws. un-screw the 3 screws and slide the Hard drive casing to the right and pull it.
4.and finally unscrew the hard drive and place the new one in .
5. once you have the Hard drive out of the casing you can now placed the new hard drive in and screw it back and placed it in to your ps3
6. once you have the new Hard Drive in place you can now hook up your PS3 including all the video cables.
7. once you turn it on it will ask you to reformat your new Hard drive just click ok and full format and thats it. you can now play again and enjoy your upgraded PS3.. ITS SEEMS ALOT BUT IT WILL ONLY TAKE YOU 5 MINUTES TO REPLACE YOUR HARD DRIVE. THE LONG PART IS THE FORMATING BUT ONCE ITS DONE YOUR BACK IN BUSINESS. HOPE THIS HELPS THANKS.

Lots of people are having this problem for lots of different reasons. It is a problem with the disk drive. Call Sony Customer Support on 08705 99 88 77 (this is a UK number and always check here first for latest numbers: http://uk.playstation.com/contact-us/). Sony will want the serial number (on the back of the playstation under the bar code). In my case I called on a Friday morning and they have arranged a replacement system for the Monday between 8am - 6pm.

I'm sure Sony has similar arrangements in all other regions.

Good luck!

i called sony this morning though and they said they'l have a new one sent to my doorstep tommorow which is pretty good customer service i'd say.

Hi guys, had exactly the same problem as every1 on here, if u live in the UK phone 08705 99 88 77 and explain then problem , its the sony customer support line, they dont need a reciept and they will collect your playstation from the desired address, repair or replace depending on the size of the problem and return within 10-21 days. They do advise to backup all save games and any other files on there you want to keep just incase they replace. DO NOT OPEN CONSOLE AS THIS IS A VOID OF WARRANTY and they may not repair . ---- Thanks.

With my PS3 on it's way home back to Sony for the disk reading error, I'm left wondering how long the whole process will take and how often I'll have to continue to send it back. So I hunted down a refurbished xbox360 with a 60 day warranty. I figure if I'm going to be continually sending systems in through the mail, I might as well have a backup and hopefully they'll never die at the same time.

I got back the PS3 with the $160 charge for the repair. Coincidentally it arrived the same day as the xbox I just purchased. I guess the point it that Sony is actually very quick with the whole process. They provide tracking from their site, UPS tracking both to and from their facility, and UPS was much more thorough with updating their tracking info and actually calling me to tell me it would be here the next day. Overall turnaround time was only about 2.5 weeks. I think it was like 5 mail days to ship it from southern cali to texas, 3 days for diagnosis and repair, and 5 mail days to come back, plus the weekends in between. I put my old hard drive back in, had to do a system update, and had to reestablish my login, but after that, everything worked great and my old COD4 account was back just as it was except strangely my customized class names were blank. The Xbox360 on the other hand required me to figure out how to synch the controller to the system, has no way to charge the controller (premium version), and no direct hdmi input (again premium version), and of course you have to pay extra to play online with the xbox360. So, we've so far learned the xbox360 is initially cheaper, but is barely functional with additional investments and is significantly less stable as a system. The solution to this thread: Keep your system well ventilated and treat it kindly because it is pretty unstable and will most likely eventually fail and need new hardware for about $160 if out of warranty.

  • firefly22 Jan 21, 2009

If your ps3 fails in the first year, you can get it fixed for free. It takes about five weeks or whatever I reported here earlier. I haven't had any problems since I got my system back from repair about 5 or 6 months ago.

As for the ps3 working on one tv with hdmi, but not on another with either cable, that makes no sense.
I can tell you that if you go from hdmi back to non-hdmi, you have to hold down the on/off button to make your system reset in order to get the signal back. Going from non-hdmi to hdmi, the system is smart enough to ask you if you want to change modes automatically.

I think these systems do have drive issues, but so far it has only happened to mine once out of like 4 or 5 years that I and the guy I bought it off of have had it.

Hey everyone. I of course had the same problem where my PS3 did not read disks anymore....WHAT A STUPID PROBLEM, HUH!! I HAVE THE SOLUTION THOUGH! You will need a USB Flash Drive so you can save any data that you want from the Hard Drive. First, go into your saved material and copy anything that you will want to the Flash Drive. If You have Multiple Users that played the game and have multiple saved characters for example like I have for "Sacred 2" you will need to transfer one to a made folder on your computer before you save the other one because even though you are saving different characters and games entirely, it is called the same thing and thus will only override the last save. Once you have everything saved you need to go into "Restore PS3 System" in the System Options menu and resore it. Crappy part is that this will take around 2 hours....lame I know but it's worth it. Once it restores, plug the USB Flash Drive back in and copy the saved material back onto the PS3. Remember if you have multiple saved things from one game you might have had to put them on your computer and so you need to delete the save on the Flash Drive that you put back on the PS3 (example: one character for "Sacred 2") and then hop on your computer where you put the other save and transfer if back to your Flash Drive. Then plug it back onto the PS3 and copy that data. (example: the 2nd character for Sacred 2") Once I did this my PS3 has worked great! It reads games, movies, music, you name it. I hope this helps you guys because no one should have togo through this mess when shelling out big bucks for this kind of stuff! Let me know if you have questions as I will be monitoring this post to see what people think.

I had similar problem and i just fixed this with the help of ps3 repair guide. It was the cable that went from my bluray drive to the console that was being pushed. I removed the cable and reseated the cable (be damned careful if you try this DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REPAIR WITHOUT THE PHOTO ILLUSTRATED GUIDE.. You have to lift a plastic flange and slide the cable out. I broke this flange and figured out that it holds the cable through compression and wedged it back on. So try not to break yours

Here are a few things you might like to try to get your games working again:

  • If you notice that it is say one or two particular games that don't work, then you may have a dirty or scratched game disk. Use a microfiber cloth dipped in lukewarm water with a little bit of dishwashing detergent, clean the disk, then leave it to dry.
  • Sometimes you may experience a dirty laser lens; clean it using a cotton bud dipped in rubbing alcohol.
  • More often than not it is actually a problem with your Blu-Ray drive that is causing your PS3 not to read games properly. You may have to replace the laser lens in your drive in order to get the drive working again correctly. Visit the following link to see a video about how to test your Blu-Ray drive to see if it's working, as well as how you can fix your drive in the event of it being broken, with an easy PS3 not reading games fix.

Had the same problem after updating to firmware 2.60 and playing Call of Duty World at War was very close to sending it to Sony with their $150 service fee (not covered anymore by warranty) So I had to tinker a little first I removed the 80GB hard drive and placed it in my laptop as a secondary disk drive went under disk management (running VISTA) and turned it on line then long formatted it using NTFS. FYI the PS3 can't use NTFS so after the format I removed the NTFS partition and left the drive in the RAW format and placed it back in the PS3 again. conduct a hard reboot by holding the Power Button down for 10 seconds (til it beeped and powered down again) turned it back on and I back to playing COD again

Side note I have 2 PS3's and after firmware update 2.60 and playing COD WAW they both died as I write this I am formatting the HDD for the 2nd PS3 on my laptop. If it works again I will try to install a 340GB hard drive in one of them

Put in a lazer lens cleaner the same prblem happended to me but when i put my lazer lens cleaner in the playstation t read the game

Posted on Nov 17, 2008

OK this isn't a guaranteed fix by any means, and my lack of hardware safety paid off, but I wanted to give my account as to what happened to me tonight (11/6/2008). I have had the same problem as everyone else (i.e. system stopped reading disks with the little swirl in the upper right corner with no game load) - full access to my downloads just no disk reads. anyways, I called Sony and they gave me the whole line of sending it in with receipt proof of purchase date. Well, my wife purchased it in cash for xmas in 2007 and I have no way of finding the receipt (no credit card or debit card history to track it at Walmart). I decided to browse through every posting I could find to try to locate a simple solution, but they all seem to say i am screwed. I figured if i was this far up the creek with my newly formed 'paperweight' of a system I would try some risky things out. I figured I had a dust problem (mowed my lawn with the windows open - dirt ***** outside my media room - this summer and I recall the whole room being full of S#$% when I was done, so i could only assume my noobness led to a system full of dust). Tonight I blew into the cd bay (no dust can all manual) and used a Q-Tip and just moved it around the inside (risky I am sure so don't do this unless you are sure you want to take the full risk; I am not a hardware safety guru by any means- i would only suggest don't just jam the q-tip in violently - be gentle). No real dust appeared, but I figured what the heck, it is broken anyhow at this point. At this point I shut system off completely from the back. I turned the whole PS3 on it's side (standing vertically) and restarted it. I inserted Star Wars TFU and as honest as I can possibly be on a forum...it is workign again!??!?!?!?! I am true when I say it has been a whole week now since it stopped reading disks, calls into SONY, hours reading through forums at night, and close to either dropping $150 to SONY or just going out to buy a new system for $400, but the risk I took of sticking a q-tip in, blowing into the cd bay (old school NES trick) and turning the system verticle with a full shut down and restart worked. I am not saying this is the end all solution but I wanted to share with everyone that it worked for me...maybe it will work for you...even just one person. REMEMBER this is a complete idiot risk I took and it could have turned my PS3 into a completely destroyed piece of hardware, so again do not try this unless you are sure you can cope with an entire loss if if doesn't go your way. I just figured trying a very manual and simple process of risky cleaning with success may save a few of you a few hundred dollars. I mean if you send you PS3 to SONY and they charge you $ to blow dust out - that is like an electrician charging you a high cost hourly rate just to twist a light bulb on a socket you thought was defective because the bulb was loose. Ok enough of my rant...good luck to you all and I hope this helps anyone.

returned to uk asda for full refund after disk error suggest you return to store and request full refund if less than 28days Sony are very helpfull have just had psp replaced by courier, phone call to help desk give serial number etc. 3 days later exchanged on doorstep.
I have now bought new ps3 from 'game' but have taken total of 3years warranty 1+2 apprx £40 accidental and faults not gonna take any chances.

Nope circut city is only a 14 day return policy. lol Looks like your getting another ps3. My sons laser crashed on his yesterday he has played it 2 weeks (he was playing call of duty 4). To the person asking about how to contact sony. Go to Sony.com and com and somewhere will say support and contact us. The number will be there. There is no fixing it and if its under 90 days its a new replacement. If its over 90 its a refurb. So better hurry. They will send you a new box w/ prepaid shipping and you send it back ups (tracking) Then your new one will come. Sucks you have to wait for it but hey at least they are sending out new ones no questions asked.. hope this helps...

Hi.

I already posted my account of the same problem, so this is one of the resolution.

I took the PS3 to the shop I bought it from. The guy said that he'll check it and get back to me in a few days and that it might cost me, seeing as to how the warranty of 1month he had given me only covered the motherboard. When I went back to him he said that it's the lens(or perhaps the blu-ray diode as others have said, but from what I remember, he told me it was the lens).. and replacing it would cost me 15KD which is around 30 pounds sterling, and around $56 at the current exchange rates... that's after discount apparently... I asked about the guarantee he'd give me, he said 2 weeks... I asked him about what happens if it should fail after the 2 weeks, he said that would be impossible..

Anyways... it's working fine and smoothly now, no problems so.. far...

Uk based owner Christamas present failed 'disk read error' after 2 weeks have returned to Asda's for full refund. Shame but now unsure wether to buy another one at this time only to have same fault......is it a batch from a certain origin ie. asia or europe bloggs seem to suggest ramdom pattern from all over. add your general location and where you bought might be a pattern.

SOURCE: can i transfer files from my 40gb ps3 to a 80gb ps3?

yeah you can by getting an external HDD. transfer the files from the 40GB to the external HDD and then plug it into the 80GB. and then just copy all the files from the external HDD to the 80GB PS3.

(yeah takes time but its the only solution since they don't allow the consoles to connect together.)

SOURCE: The Playstation 3 will not read any discs.

Your blue ray lens needs either cleaning or replacing, maxwell as brought out a blueray lens cleaner disc recommended for even ps3 consoles. If that doesn't work though you have to send it to sony or approved sony repairs centres. Search on google for ps3 repair centres near your area.
