Question about HP Pavilion F1503 15" LCD Flat Panel Monitor
Most of the time in this situation, the problem is due to the backlight going out. However, there are some instances where the inverter cable is bad.
The backlight is the part of the LCD which illuminates the screen. Think of an LCD as having multiple layers. One layer has the image itself on a semi-transparent layer and then behind that layer rests the backlight (usually a florescent bulb) which shines through all other layers to make the image glow and illuminate.

As far as replacing the backlight, I always replace the whole LCD itself, which includes the backlight.
Otherwise, you risk ordering the backlight and finding out that it was the connection from the backlight to the LCD that was causing the problem (very possible) and then you would have to order the LCD anyway.
