Question about Hitachi 50V500 50 in. HD-Ready LCD Television
This is a common issue with Hitachi TVs especially the one that you have. You have a defective light engine and here is what you need to do: You need to call Hitachi's customer relation department at 800-654-7013 and tell them the problems that you are facing and that you think it's a defective light engine. They will initially act like they have no idea what you're talking about but will give you the names of some certified dealers in your area to call. Once you have a tech out from the dealer and they confirm the light engine problem (takes less than a minute) call Hitachi’s customer relation department again and tell them that a certified tech has confirmed the problem. All of a sudden, Hitachi will say they are aware of the problem. Hitachi will call the dealer and confirm this with them and they should send the light engine directly to the dealer and Hitachi will cover the cost of the part (around $1500). All you will pay for is the labor; you can also try to tell them to cover it if the TV is not more then 3+years old. Hitachi knows about this problem all to well and they are replacing the part for free. If you deal with their regular customer service people, they will have you chasing your tell. Hitachi customer relations will take care of you. As far as the spots are concerned, usually cleaning the LCD panels and/or the prism corrects the problem. The cleaning method can be as simple as using clean compressed air or physically cleaning the components with 99.8% pure isopropyl alcohol and a special swab. This is a procedure only for an experienced technician since it involves a fairly elaborate disassembly and cleaning method. According to Hitachi, the overwhelming majority of the optical systems returned could have been cleaned in the field.
