Replacement of ice maker solenoid in door

My in door ice maker solenoid needs to be replaced. I have the part (appliance guru), but I'm not sure how to access and remove the current solenoid. Is their a manual showing how to access the old part in trhe side by side freezer door?

I am looking to access the solenoid that is in the freezer door, in other words, I need to either open the icemaker control panel (crushed, cubes, water) from the exterior of the door or the interior of the door. The solenoid and plunger that I need to replace are located there. I'm just not sure if I have to take the entire stainless steel exterior cover off to access it, or if there is some easier way.

Go behind the ice box and look for the water line going in. The water valve will be connected to the line. Be sure to shut off the water before attempting to do anythang.

Would the ice maker water valve if it quit make the ice maker make ice and just quit even if the water in the door still functions

those are two separate valves , if your ice maker stops and starts then id bet its rust on the drive shaft of the clock time motor inside the ice machine , motor doesn't have enough power to overcome rust all the time (some of the time only)

2014 Kenmore side by side refrig. Water comes out of the door fine. Will not make ice.Tried the reset button on the left by the bucket, took top of door apart to see if mechanism was froze up.

Hello Rhonda Cornett,

Okay... water at the wall is connected... good...
but now you have TWO solenoids at the ENTRY POINT...

It would have been nice to know if there is water in the tray...
or if it EVER WORKED... but whatever.

If you are NOT getting water in the ICE TRAY...
you need to check that wire is connected to ITS OWN SOLENOID... (ELSE: solenoid might be bad)...

You might be able to TEMPORARILY REVERSE the water valves
to see if the door service still works with the SUSPECT VALVE..

Still works ... Ice maker trouble...
Fails solenoid trouble (bad valve) replace!

Then restore EVERYTHING... (take pictures ahead of tampering).

That click (or thump) you hear whenever you fill your water glass.

Every ice-maker I've ever tampered with has an on/off switch..

Fill controls... and firmness settings of some sort...
Check'em all out before getting DRASTIC.

Ice maker water will not shout off Model WRS965CIAE it just runs till the tray overfills

Hello Andy;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service appliance technician.

You have one of two problems.

1.) Ice maker module - Part Number 821515

Fortunately, your ice maker is repairable. The module is like a little computer. It has a circuitry, a motor and a rotating gear set. The module tells the water solenoid valve when to turn on and how much water to fill the cube tray. Then it reads a sensor telling the module that the cubes are frozen. Then it turns on a heater under the cube mold. After a period the module tells the motor to turn on and harvest the ice cubes. It also has a lever arm on/off switch.

Watch the video. Remove the module from the ice maker. You may need a small flat head ***** driver to pop off the cover to get to it. Inspect the circuitry for any burn marks.

You will need to jump start the ice maker after reassembly and if you decide to just buy a new one.
1.) Insert a piece of 12 or 14 gauge jumper wire into the two holes on the face of the module marked: "T' and "H".
2.) Hold in the door light switch.
3.) After the module starts wait 5 seconds and remove the jumper, while still holding in the door light switch, until the ice maker has completer it's cycle and fills with water.
This will not solve your problem. This is how to start the icemaker - not shown in the video

Module Cost: Sears $98.56 + Tax
Ebay $25.00

2.) Ice Maker Water Solenoid Valve: Part Number W10341320.
If your ice maker is filling with water, then the solenoid is working, but the spool valve may be sticking and not closing quickly.

See general replacement video.

Solenoid Valve Cost: Sears $80.00
Search the internet for best price including used.

Go into the Sears website and put in your refrigerator model number. You will get diagrams and component part numbers.

No water coming from water line to refrigator

There is a water solenoid at the water inlet in the back of the refrigerator that is operated by the ice maker unit. It is separate from the water dispenser. Make sure the wires at the ice maker are fully seated and not pinched at the door hinge. If the wiring looks good, then the solenoid needs to be replaced.

Why won't ice tray filling stop?

Michael, I suspect that the water solenoid valve needs replacement--that symptom usually causes either a slow leak and an overflowing ice cube tray or no water flow at all. To test the solenoid valve, slide your refrigerator out and view the back cover. There should be a double solenoid valve down near the bottom back of your refrigerator, one solenoid valve for the water serve spout on the front of the freezer door, and the other solenoid valve for the ice maker. I'd swap the clear plastic lines (to the door water spicket and the icemaker, put a plastic cup under the door water spicket and check in a few minutes for water leaking into your cup--if it does leak into the cup, you've found the problem! There are seval excellent videos on the web covering how to replace the valve, see:

That solenoid is controlled by a cam driven switch built into the ice maker motor assembly which can occasionally go bad and need replacement or adjustment, but my experience points to a leaking dirt plugged-open water solenoid valve. Replacment solenoid valves are easy to replace at a cost ranging from $20 to $78 with free shipping to your doorstep--check ebay!

My ice maker quit working.

Ice not being dumped out because the heating element designed to slightly melt ice so arms can push it out is non functional and needs replacement. Cheaper and better to replace entire unit at nominal cost.

Water does not come to ice maker

Is this the reason you replaced the solenoids and ice maker? If so please see suggestions below.
Is the replacement ice maker an exact replacement? Non exact replacements may not work.
Ice maker may not be cycling to call for water, ice maker fill tube may be frozen, bad connection from ice maker (at the ice maker connector) to solenoid, or open wire from ice maker connector to solenoid. Ask for details for the above possibilities.

Stopped making ice

if the water dispenser on the door still works. the first thing to check is to see if the ice maker is running. check that the arm is down. if it is, attach a peace of scotch tape to the arm and to the case of the ice maker.(make sure that it is just barely attached) if the ice maker works, the arm will raise approximately every 45 minutes, dislodging the tape. if not use a voltmeter set to the 12 volt dc range to check that the ice maker is receiving power. if it is, you will need to replace the ice maker (or at least the timer) if the water on the door does not work, then the most likely problem is that the water solenoid valve needs to be replaced.

replacement parts can be found here, good luck :-)
