The scanner unit of my Lexmark X3580 is making a continuous clicking sound so it is unable to scan and/or make copies. I have noticed that, the toothed belt which moves on the gear to transport the scanning light is the one producing the noise at the extreme right where it comes into contact with the gear. Please help me resolve this problem.

If you tried to reinstall, then the problem is not coming from your computer but the unit itself. If it does not go through the motion of scanning, then it is a problem in the power to the motor which is most likely "fried."
Locate the "On" button located on the top right side of the Lexmark 2600 Series Printer Scanner. Turn the unit on by pressing and releasing the "On" button one time.
Raise the scanner unit until it locks into place. Allow the print cartridge carrier to move to the loading position. Wait for the print cartridge carrier to stop moving.
Locate the color print cartridge in the carrier on the right. Release the empty color print cartridge by pressing down on the cartridge carrier latch. Raise the cartridge carrier lid. Remove the empty color cartridge by pulling it straight up. Place the empty cartridge in the plastic bag and set aside for recycling.
Remove the new color cartridge from its packaging. Remove the protective tape from the nozzle and connector on the back and bottom of the color cartridge. Dispose of the protective tape.
Install the new color cartridge into the right cartridge carrier slot. Close the cartridge carrier lid. Press down on the cartridge carrier lid until it clicks into place.
Raise the scanning unit slightly. Release the scanning unit support. Close the scanning unit.

Sounds like the scanning mirror might be locked - during shipping, the mirror is locked to prevent damage. Look around the back or the underside of the unit and look for a slider with a lock/unlock picture on it. Slide it to unlock and the mirror should be free to move.
There is probably a speck of dust on the scanning unit. You can unlatch the glass scanner table and, with the unit powered down and the cord unconnected, gently pull the scanning unit out (or you can start a scan and power down the unit when the scanning unit is in the middle of the table). Opening the scanner table will void your warranty!
Examine carefully the glass "window" of the scanner in the area corresponding to the dark line using an angled light and see if you can spot the dust. You can clean the window glass with a lint-free cloth dampened with alcohol. Do not press hard on the scanning unit since the mechanism is quite delicate. Afterwards, carefully replace and latch back the glass table.
If the dark line does not go away, you might have a faulty scanner, but that's unlikely.
The Windows Vista x64 drivers available on the Lexmark website do not contain the All-In-One Center. They are minimum drivers. Although the scan drivers are shipped with the web package, they cannot be used by the All-In-One Center since it is not included. Please use Windows Scanners and Cameras or Photo Gallery for Scanning.
Please follow the steps given below to perform the WIA scanning:
1. Click on "Start," and "Windows photo gallery."
2. Under "Windows photo gallery" click on "File" and " Import from camera and scanner."
3. Select the "Lexmark X6150 printer" and click on the import button.
4. To begin the scanning process, click "Scan Now."
Load the text document face down on the scanner glass. Open the Lexmark Imaging Studio. Click the Scan & Edit Text (OCR) button (shown below). The All-In-One Center appears with the Scanning & Copying tab expanded.Click Preview Now in the upper right corner of the All-In-One Center. An image of the scanned document appears in the preview section. Click and drag the box with the dotted lines to select a specific area of the preview image to scan.From the Select your text editor: drop-down menu, select a word-processing or text-editing program.Click Send Now.
Right Click on My Computer/Computer if Vista........ Click on Properties then click on Hardware click on Device Manager...... On that list u will see the Printer Name with an exclamation Mark........ Right Click on that click on update Drivers...... Insert the CD to the drive....... Select Browse My Computer for Driver software..... Click on Browse and then Double Click on Computer go to Lexmark X*****.......... Double click on Drivers and then click on scan and then click ok........ Now click next it will say the hardware is ready to use then u can just click on finish and scan..... Thanku
