it's possible your answer is correct. i have run diagnostics before with no problem showing up. i will run again. i think the issue is different than anything you are suggesting though. already had my corporate tech guy also check the seating of the cable and all that looks fine. i thought the keyboard might have a tab cord to pull to activate but that's not the case. maybe the keyboard requires a new driver but that shouldn't be the issue either.
the computer recognizes the keyboard yet the keys don't work. maybe the controller is not communicating with the motherboard but not sure how to fix this. thanks for the input. more welcome.

Not trying to insult your intelligence but are you sure you plugged the keyboard cable all the way and even into the slot and locked it in place. I have had issues where the contacts were not all the way seated in the slot and not fully locked in and the computer knew the keyboard but I had lost partial function. Below is the Dell diagnostics manual for running start up test on your laptop. If your installation is the original it should have a diagnostics partition on it. These steps will show you how to access and run. Just copy and paste the below in your internet browser address bar, hit enter, you can also print it to follow along when the laptop powers down. I hate to say it but I think you got a bad board from Dell, try getting another off ebay or something different and try a different route than the Dell way.

Dell AQ6-7D20 Keyboard SPACE BAR NOT WORKING

Hello,

Try booting to safe mode and try it from there.

Here's how to boot to safe mode.

Restart your computer and tap F8. Once you see safe mode. Use the arrow key to highlight that and press enter.

Once inside safe mode, then check if your space bar works. If not, then you need to reset your keyboard (you can find tutorials in youtube). If it woks in safe mode, then do a system restore.

How to do system restore:

Click on Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

Select a date or restoration point which is dated before the problem occurred. Launch it.

Please drop me a line if you have any questions.

Both my space bar and M key are off. I dont know how to fix it.

There are multiple different designs for laptop keys - so the exact procedure may vary from one machine to another. A good source for instructional videos is:http://www.laptopkey.com/installation_guides.php#modnum

In your case, I would order and replace the existing keyboard, and keep the old keyboard for parts should a key come off in the future.

If you've never replaced a laptop keyboard before, the procedure isn't difficult, but you need to exercise extreme care when disconnecting/connecting the ribbon cable to the motherboard. If you break this connector, you'll end up having to replace the motherboard.

You can find replacement keyboards, and instructions, easily by typing in "Inspiron 1420 keyboard replacement" in Google.

Good luck!

Where is the enter button on my keyboard

The enter button will be located to the right of your keyboard. under back space and above shift. The enter key will have an arrow pointing left on it. Usually 3rd button down at the far right of keyboard.

Hope this helps and please rate thanks
