I have exactly the same problem.
Switched speakers - always comes out of left channel Switched inputs - always / still comes out of left channel Switched input type - HDMI-back to Digital Optical Input (both inputs Opt 1 and opt 2) has same problem
Then I tried Analog in/Analog out to second amplifier (an Arcam Alpha 1 1985 vintage) and the pass through worked fine
So I have a problem in the 501 for sure, but not sure if it's worth fixing when I can have a r08 shipped to my door for less than $300 all in. and am I OK with a lightly used 8 year old (at most) Onkyo 501 failing on me like this?

Without actually hearing the static, I can't be 100% sure, but you could have digital noise. Try turning off any surround processing and see if the noise goes away. That should bypass any digital processing.

Please update this with the results. That will determine the next step.

Thanks,
Dan

Thanks for the update. One of three things will be required to repair this unit:

    1) Replace the DSP IC on the DSP board.

    2) Replace the entire DSP board.

    3) Track down a possible defective transistor (or pair) in the front end for the left speaker channel.

The root cause here is likely to be a defective DSP IC. This is the portion that processes all surround sound information. It sounds like the result is a distorted channel. It remains to be seen whether the digital stream is faulty or if the channel has a problem in the early amp stages. Without actually seeing the unit and looking at signals on the scope, I can't tell which.

This unit will need to see a service center. It is a decent unit and is worth the repair cost. If the center tries to replace the DSP board in its entirety, it will be expensive. Request that the board be repaired if possible.

    Please keep us posted.

    Thanks,

    Dan

VERY LOW VOLUME FROM SORROUND SPEEKERs

some surround sounds do not put out loud sounds except from the front speakers only. Try using different inputs to see if it makes a difference.

Onkyo TX-SR706; Turntable output only from one speaker

Try some troubleshooting to check whether its the turntable or the the receiver.

What happens if you exchange the output cables of the turntable from left to right. Does the problem shift?
Does the sound changes from left to right speaker?

Similarly try on the inputs of the Receiver.. does the problem shift...?
This way you will be able to isolate the problem, whether with the receiver or the turntable....

Let me know, we can trouble shoot it further....
