The message inbox says I have 1 new message, even though I have deleted all messages and there are no unread texts. It also displays the small envelope icon on the main screen in the bottom left corner,...

go to the mesage tab and click options then search for the option on the sim mesages and when it opens delete all the messages in the sim message box and check whether any messages in the outbox

My home screen shows a flashing envelope icon even though my sim contacts memory is nowhere near full

This icon indicates that the SIM card's own text message storage is full. This doesn't actually cause problems on the 5800 because it stores its messages in the phone's own memory, but the envelope can look a bit annoying.
To get rid of the flashing envelope:

1. On the standby screen press the white menu button.

2. Select "Messaging"

3. Select "Options"

4. Select "SIM Messages"

5. Delete some or all of the messages from the SIM messages folder using the Options menu.
