My dvd-rw combo drive will not read cds any longer. Sometimes it does (i.e. after 200 tries). It will read any DVD and also write DVDs. How do I get it to read CDs again?
1)right clik on my computer
go to
properties
device manager
clik on cdrom
uninstall it then re-install it
after reinstall try using the drive
2)update windows ,use custom and see if it finds an updated driver,if it does or doesnt update windows anyhow.
after you restart the computer try using the rom drive.
if that doesnt work;
go buy a cd/dvd rom cleaning disk at your local electronics store and use it.
if all this doesnt work;
buy a new rom drive
is this a desktop or laptop?
if its a laptop:
is the rom drive held in by a screw? and if so is it present?
other than that a connection may be loose
if its a desktop:
get a new ribbon cable
as far as cd repairs ive tried both disk dr. the crank version and the motorized version ,theyre really not that good. theyre repair ratio is a hit n miss also

I've already tried all this, pluse:
(1) Repairing my game CDs
(2) Cleaning the drive with Canned Air
(3) Reattaching the IDE cable
What I'd like to know is why it works on occasion (i.e. the 200th time I mentioned before) for CDs and works perfectly for DVDs. It seems to have a better hit ration with Audio CDs (i.e. 1 in 50 tries).
Oh, and when I used the CD cleaner, it actually played the CD audio as it was supposed to, but to no avail with any other CDs. I'm assuming it's a software problem if that's the case.
Does anyone else have any suggestions?
It's a desktop. But why would the DVD function work (and the CD function on occasion) if it was a ribbon cable?

My cd/dvd drive used to work but now there's no reading at all. The troubleshooting guide says the drive is missing or damaged. How do I replace it?
