Question about WYSE WY-150 AMBER 80 (90098307) Network Terminal

I work on Wyse terminals, I have had one big problem with the wy-150, the horz. drive xistor overheats and the screen shifts to the left, i have replaced the flyback, horz. xixtor , and some caps in the sweep circuit, this seems to be a problem on about 1/3 of the units out there and i have spents houres and houres trying to find a fix for this. Any one knows how ti fix this? Bob

The horz. output transistor on the Wyse 150 part # 2SC2898, overheats and not the horz. drive. and screen shifts to the left.

  • robert neilson Sep 11, 2009

The transistor that over heats is the Horz. Output transistor(2S2898) and not the drive transistor, need some one that has had the problem on the exact same model, to tell me what parts to replace to fix the problem. Bob

Solved the problem, I replaced the MC 1391 Horz., TV IC, and the problem went away...Bob

Hi,

1) you're problem might be on the horizontal deflection circuits

a) possible fault might be the diode that is parallel to the horizontal deflection output transistor. ( they are in series with each other if there are available)

b) possible fault might be the supply of the horizontal output
transistor is a little bit high.

c) possible fault might be the HDT transformer is partially shorted
just a possibility due to horizontal drive xsistor overheating.

d) the screen shifts to the right can also be caused by the horizontal
oscillator circuits, maybe a changed value Mylar capacitor.

e) can also be caused by the electronic controls controlling or aiding
the horizontal oscillator circuits

f) the solution to these problems can be an actual replacement of
the said components, if you don't have an ESR tester or any equivalent good quality capacitance meter

g) try trimming the power supply output that goes to the pin of the
flyback transformer that goes to the horizontal def output transistor.

h) try also lowering the screen resolution from the video card of the computer, try 800 X 600 just for testing, eliminating the possibilities

i) if there seems to be a fold-over on the raster then still in the oscillator circuits to the driver stages.

j) might try also to put temporarily a bigger heatsink for the said
overheating horiz drive xsistor while still on the process of trouble-shooting

k) try also to note down the supply voltages of the horiz out xsistor from the pin of the flyback

l) the supply voltage of the HDT transistor, before and after the series resistor.

m) you might need also to plug the unit to a lower AC input supply
when having to troubleshoot the problem.

please note that horiz drive means the one driving the horiz out transistor.

just don't forget to unplug the unit when extracting electronic components, and be careful on the flyback area.

hope i have helped you, thanks for using Fixya!

there are also some possible causes why the horizontal output is having too much heat

    a) may not have the exact replacement of the flyback transformer

    b) may not have the original output transistor

    c) the output transistor is overdriven, try having a 19 ohms shunted on the base and emitter of the

    horizontal out

    d) try doubling the horizontal output

sometimes it heats too much due to the loads

    a) check the supply that goes to the video outputs maybe about 180V , check the capacitor

shunted to it, replace if necessary.

    b) sometimes it is on the series capacitor that goes to the yoke

    c) sometimes you have a slightly higher supply of voltages on the flyback section

    d) you have a high G2 voltage

have a look also on the 2 series diode that is parallel to the horizontal output

nice to hear you made it, it is inside the IC, congrats

    d and e possible causes

Click this link for why horizontal transistor gets hot and shortedhttp://www.repairfaq.org/sam/reppic/horiz-tv.pdf ---------------- and for more information horizontal transistor is a power transistor.if its getting short that means power board is having power supply issue.the board has to be checked to locate the faulty component that is making the horizontal transistor short again n again. ----------- thanks.keep updated.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

A few ideas you may want to consider/try:

  • modify/replace (with a slightly higher value) the dropping resistor supplying the horizontal drive transistor through the HD transformer;
  • substitute the HD transistor with a higher rating/capacity;
  • select a substitute HD transistor in TO-126 packing that would allow a small heatsink to be attached.

Unfortunately, no available schematics for the 150 on my end, but on others that use a 2SC1213 as the HD transistor, replaced  the 39 ohms dropping resistor with  47 ohms

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

Wyse S30 power settings

You can check the settings in the bios (password will be "Fireport") I dont think there is anything in there that would trigger this.

Is there a screen-saver option in the control panel for the device? If so, see if it is set. If not, then try using the Wyse website to update the terminals OS to the latest. This will hopefully solve the problem. It might just be an incompatability with the older OS version.

The wyse 50 terminal does not work properly

Hello,

Wyse 50/60/150/160 monitors were my specialty!

From what you were explaining it seems to me that you have a bad internal battery and it needs to be changed and a factory reset/ calibration needs to be performed.

I can repair wyse terminals at my facility if you like. The repair cost is not that high and we can also perform the regular repair and adjustments on all wyse monitors if needed.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Thanks

Do you have a print screen button, sometimes abbreviated PrtScr on the keytops. I would get the contractor back on site and have them setup the machine so you can print, they left the job unfinished and I would emphasize that when you call back.
