Question about Shimano XTR Disc Brake Wheelset

Wh-m965 race replacement

I wonder whether repair of the bearings of this type of shimano wheels is possible. Wear seems important, spinning resistance is important. I know cones can be replaced, but what about the inner side races. Are they an integral part of the hub-body, and can't they therefore not be replaced/repaired ?! Thanks, Jan

Races cannot be replaced. Keep cones and bearings in good shape and you won't have to worry about it for a long time.

What Is a Wheel Bearing? What Is a Wheel Bearing? A wheel bearing is a set of steel balls held together by a metal ring called a race. They help wheels spin fast with as little friction as possible. They are used on all kinds of vehicles, from bicycles to aircraft and cars. On a car, a wheel bearing rides on a metal axle shaft and fits tightly inside the hub, which is a hollow chunk of metal at the center of the wheel. What Does a Bad Wheel Bearing Sound Like? When bearings are damaged and making noise, it's hard to diagnose because you have to drive the vehicle in order to reproduce the sound. Here are tips to help you find the source of the problem: When the seal on the wheel bearing is broken or damaged, the noise starts out very faint and becomes louder over time. It sounds like the noise that your tires make when hitting a rumble strip on the highway, just not quite as loud, something like the sound of playing cards flapping against bicycle spokes
  • While driving down the road about 40 mph, sway the car side to side slowly, shifting the weight of the vehicle from one side to the other. Do not drive crazy or cause the car to spin out, just sway it gently. Notice whether the noise gets louder or softer. If the noise is a little less if you turn right, the damaged bearing may be on the left, or vice versa.
  • Note that tires that are "chopped" or "scalloped" (worn in patches) also make a rhythmic noise that increases in speed. This sounds very similar to a bad wheel bearing. Look at your tires as well if you hear this kind of noise. Why Do Wheel Bearings Make Noise? Most wheel bearings are hardened steel and can withstand a lot of abuse. Its two worst enemies are heat and water. Heat caused by lack of lubrication can destroy a wheel bearing. Water that penetrates a sealed bearing will also destroy it.
    Most wheel bearings manufactured today are sealed. They come from the factory pressed together as an assembly: front race, bearing set, center race, bearing set, and outer race, with seals on both the front and rear. Seals protect bearings from the elements, water, and debris, and they also seal in the high-temperature grease the bearing needs. When a seal is broken or damaged, the wheel bearing will fail and start making noise.
    the Source of Bearing Noise , if you really want to know whether your noise is a bearing noise and you can get the car up on a lift, you can use an improvised stethoscope (actually a big screwdriver) to listen to the sound and find out where it's coming from. Have someone in the vehicle start it and run it at about 40 mph. Using a long screwdriver or stethoscope, rest it on the hub near each wheel bearing. Careful! Don't let the tool touch a moving part, or it could fly up and hit you. Listen through the handle of the screwdriver (or through the stethoscope) for the noise, and I guarantee you will be able to determine which bearing is bad Replacing Your Wheel Bearing Wheel bearings do not fail immediately, and usually give you some time before you need to have them replaced. I suppose if a wheel bearing failed completely it could lock up and prevent the car from moving. Then again, my daughter drove on a noisy bearing for six months and nothing happened except that it got louder and louder.
    You shouldn't necessarily have the bearings on both sides replaced. Just because one fails is no reason to think the others are about to; bearings should last a long time.
    Replacing one is a bit expensive because of the labor involved. There are a lot of parts to remove and get out of the way before you can get to the wheel bearing,

Weel bearing replacement on 1990 vw carevelle

You didn't say whether it has disc or drum brakes on the rear but either way it shouldn't be a difficult job for someone with basic mechanic skills. If it has drums in the rear it is as simple as removing the outer dust cap, remove cotter key holding the lock nut in place then remove the grease seal on the inner side of the drum and wipe as much of the old grease as possible. Then the bearing races that the bearings ride on will need to be replaced, this can be difficult and dangerous so wear proper eye protection while using a long drift punch or flat tip chisel to drive the old races out, there are cutouts on the area around the race and you will need to go from side to side until they are out. Replacing the races is just a reverse order ans the race with the large opening down you will want to use a chisel laid flat across the race and carefully tap into position then use the flat end of the chisel to drive the race down until it is seated all the way in the hub taking care not to damage race and keep the safety glasses on. Then it will be packing the bearings with specified bearing grease, and installing new bearing seals and re installing hub and wheel. One other thing I advise all of my customers is to buy a repair manual for your car, they can be bought at most car parts stores or online from various publishers such as Haynes or Chilton for about $20 USD this is a very small price for most everything a consumer can service on their car.

How do you check wheel bearings?

Most cars will go their liftime without a problem from wheel bearings. And they let you know when they go by billowing smoke out of the wheel as you drive, then it is too late, But the fronts are fairly easy, the rears, you cannot check, you have to go by ear, If they are grinding back there, they need attention, rear axle cars only, not front drive, the fronts are on a spindle that is easily accessed, Just rocking the wheel will tell you if it loose, but always listen first for for dry grinding sound, It will eventually get worse. Hi, the clicking noise that you hear is the sound of bearings/races reaching the end of their service life. You will need to take the pedals off and then remove the pedal from the shaft itself. Inspect the bearings and the races for excessive wear. The new bearings can be put in place using some thick grease on the race you can then stick each bearing into the grease and the will stay put until you are ready to do the opposite side of the pedal.

Need to replace right front wheel bearing

Remove the wheel and tire ***'y. remove the brake caliper to get it out of your way, then take the dust cap off the rotor where you'l find a nut with acover and a cotterpin. remove the cotter pin, nut coverand loosen the nut, the rotor will come off. the outer bearing will immediately come out if ti's not buried into the race. Remove the inner bearing by knocking out the which you'll need to replace as well. actually to do the job right , replace both races, bearings and the seals. the races and bearings have to wear together and using new bearings on old races is just asking for trouble soon, as they do not wear together like they should. Pack bearings with new grease, install the new races, put some extra grease inside the rotor so the bearings and races will have plenty of lube, install the inner bearing then the seal, put the rotor on the spindle, install the outer bearing nuut, tighten the outer nut just until the rotor rotates one to two revolutions when spinning freehand andinstall the nut cover and the cotter pin, caliper wheel and tire, you're finished, good luck.

Replacing front wheel bearing

There are two bearings on teh front wheel, an inner and an outer bearing. Changing them is not hard if you are mechanically inclined. What you do is, jack the front end up to lift the wheel off the ground and put a jackstand to support the vehicle and put a block on teh rear wheels...DO NOT USE THE JACK ONLY!!!

Once the vehicle is up, remove the wheel to access the disc brakes.

Remove the caliper from the rotor and place it somewhere in the wheel well where the brake line will not be stressed...THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT...the job gets a LOT harder if the brake line breaks!

Next, remove the bearing cap to reveal the cotter pin and bearing nut, remove the cotter pin and nut DO NOT LOSE THESE!!!

You will see the outer bearing, remove it, the washer, and the race then pull the rotor off to reveal the inner bearing, race, and grease seal; remove these, DO NOT FORGET HOW THEY CAME OFF!!!

Clean the spindle and the rotor meaning get all the dirt and crud...this has to be squeaky clean or dirt will get inside and you will be replacing your bearings again in a couple of months.

Now, you need to pack the inner bearing with grease...what I do is wear nitrile gloves and scoop a handful of grease out of the container into the palm of my hand, then I take the new bearing and push it into the grease ensuring grease is in the bearing and coming out the other side.

Next install the grease seal, inner bearing and race by following the removal steps in reverse order. While you're at it, put a good amount of grease on the spindle...there is no such thing as too much grease.

Slide the rotor on until it makes with the inner bearing, make sure the rotor is on straight, if you can't get it straight the inner bearing is not on straight so do the inner bearing again to get it on straight and then put the rotor should slide easily on with no resistance and rotate freely.

Now pack the outer bearing the same way you packed the inner bearing and slide it on the spindle. Install the washer, this will most likely have a tab on it to align the spindle, make sure the washer is on correctly.

Now you are going to reinstall the nut but only hand tighten it for now because you are going to have to spin the rotor forwards and backwards to ensure it rotates freely and is straight.

Once you determine the rotor is straight and rotates freely, tighten the nut about a quarter turn (no more than 16 foot-pounds). If the nut is castellated, ensure it is lined up with the hole in the spindle. Now install a new cotter pin...IT HAS TO BE NEW, using the old one increases the risk of the pin breaking which will let the nut loosen which will end up with your wheel coming off, most likely while you're doing 80 on the Interstate.

Once the cotter pin is installed and bent, fit the cap back on. The pin should be bent sufficiently to allow the cap to be tapped on.

Now reinstall the caliper and pads, put the wheel back on and you are done!

Noisy front wheel bearing

It is possible but i do reccomend changing the bearing races in the hub when you do it to prevent any premature wear on your new bearings. A new hub/rotor assembly will come with new races installed if that makes it any easier.
