Question about TDK Indi DVD 420N (AID+420N) DVD+RW Burner

3 Answers

I can't seem to find the drivers or firware to get my TDK 420n DVDRW to recognize when there is a dvd in the drive. The links that I've found lead to a page that no longer exists. It seems to read cds ok but not blank or movie dvds. Can you help me please ?

The lens is not dirty, it reads cds perfectly well. I've had this problem in the past and it was a driver issue but TDK no longer has the download on their site. Is there anywhere else I can get it or a substitute driver that might work also ?

I have a TDK 420N DVD Burner and Have stored data on DVDs with it before. It didn't come with any software. I bought it on ebay. I'm still using it today, but I can't store data on dvds. It's burns cd-roms all day long, and I can play DVD movies using windows media player. It reads my DVDs with backed up files on them, but when I try to burn a DVD using Ahead Nero The DVD drive doesn't even show up. I think I solved the problem before when I installed Power DVD, but I no longer have that software. I can't find any DVD drivers for the TDK 420N

Heres the website. You can also try upgrading the firmware for your burner. It might help with other DVD software packages.
    http://legacyproducts.tdk.com/support/dv...
Now my problem is I get a log in message when I try to download the firmware :
    AUTHENTICATION REQUIRED
Enter username and password for ftp://www.tdk.com
    USER NAME
    PASSWORD
And when I try to contact Tech Support ( www.tdktechsupport.com ), I get this error message.
    Problem loading page
    The connection was reset
The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.
    * The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
    moments.
    * If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
    connection.
    * If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.
I'm going to see if I can contact someone at TDK in sales or something to possibly get a valid tech support contact information.

I tried downloading driver detective and a few other driver detection softwares, none of them detected a missing driver for this particular drive.

I am having a serious problem here. I thought I found my firmware solution but every link I find gives me this login pop up screen
    AUTHENTICATION REQUIRED
Enter username and password for ftp://www.tdk.com
And when I tried to contact TDK Tech Support from a link on the TDK page (www.tdktechsupport.com ), it's another error message.
Please if anyone can assist me on this I would greatly appreciate it.

This is an old drive that I pulled from an old system and installed in a new one. If I had software for it I don't know where it is now. Can you suggest a free decoder program that I can use until I retrieve my Nero disk from work on Tuesday.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

  • contact284 Sep 09, 2009

Sorry I'm just getting back to you. I tried loading dvd decoders and media player softwares but nothing worked. I really think that I just need to find the firmware download. I contacted imation, who I believe now own TDK and they are supposed to get back to me. In the mean time I just removed the burner from another system I had and installed it in this one. Thanks for your information, it was a good suggestion.

  • contact284 Sep 11, 2009

I tried to clean the lens using your method. I still have the same problem. I am not the only one who has had this problem with this particular drive. ( See TDK Indi DVD 420N DVD+RW problems on this site ) The problem I believe is when you go to TDK's site to upgrade your firmware it gives you an error message or the site is no longer there or something. Check it out for yourself. I think that this drive has been discontinued but they should still have an archive or something for upgrading the firmware. I think it is not a hardware problem it is a software problem. Google it, its not just me.

  • contact284 Sep 11, 2009

Thanks, I'd appreciate any help you could give me because I still haven't heard anything back by email from TDK. I might break down and start calling numbers, just out of curiosity as to whether this problem can be solved or not. Thanks again.

Is this a new system install?
Do you have a DVD decoder program installed - like NERO?
Was it working in the past on this machine?
If you do not have - or the decoder has been corrupted - a simple re-install of the decoder should clear you right up.
A program should have come with your DVD drive bundle.
If the program you use(d) to watch DVDs was removed - the P/C has no way to interpret the information it is being sent.
Re-install the DVD decoder program (also others available online for free)

Thanks, and keep me posted.

The problem is not the website - i have checked it out - the problem is TDK is now owned by a different company (Imation) now and they have chosen not to keep the support updated.

As you can tell on most links of the TDK site - they do not work properly or lead to bad pages.

Its actually a FUJITSU drive - re-labelled TDK.

    Their phone # is 1-800-285-2783

TRY THIS SITE - it is a direct link to the driver.

Check it out & let me know.

    Thanks

Hi,

this is not a driver or a firmware problem. The issue is most likely a dirty laser lens, try a dvd lens cleaner disc, or you can try cleaning the lens yourself if your outside of warranty open up the drive, remove it from the computer, use a q-tip with 70% or higher alcohol. I've personally used just water on the q-tip - because I don't have the alcohol around.

wet the other end of the qtip with alcohol or water, clean the laser lens, then dry it with the other end of the qtip.

Here is a video on how to clean the laser lens, its for a PS2, but it does not matter as you would clean any lens like this.

The Laser frequency is different for CD's and DVD's if the lens is dirty it may read the other. Or the Laser lens could be failing.

Its not a driver issue, I'll pay your premium assistance fee if it is a driver issue.

Do let me know if you get it fixed with some drivers.

  • Ekse Sep 09, 2009

A firmware will not fix your problem.

The firmware, is a internal software inside the DVD player, this is programmed in the factory, all dvd drives that are supposed to read and burn DVD's will have the proper firmware from the factory and downloading or looking for a firmware on your own is a waste of time.

You have a faulty drive, your wasting your time looking for a firmware, it won't solve the problem.

    Someone has misled you

this is the 420N, not the 440N?
is this an internal or external burner?

what operating system are you using?  on Windows XP, there's a good chance that you can just use the default drivers for that...

the best set of drivers i can find is here:

http://www.opendrivers.com/categorycompany/15/11603/cd-rom-tdk-free-driver-download.html

but most of those are firmware updates, or for slightly different models.
