Question about Singer 7422

1 Answer

The button hole option isn't working.

I have not made a button hole on this machine yet. I tried tonight so I got the book out and followed the instructions step by step. It is supposed to make the button hole automatically when you have the lever down, the button in the foot, etc. I did all that and started the machine and the material does not move. Furthermore, the top thread and bobbin thread just make knots. The directions don't specify if I use the regular plate (which I am) and the needle position and the stitch width do not illuminate at all (which I presume is because it is automatic). Please help..I still have 10 articles to finish before Christmas.

I tried the tissue paper and the material moves now, but the thread knots. It makes little knots all along the stitch line. I also tried a lighter weight material. I was originally using a fleece. With the paper I tried baby cordiroy. Do I need to make another adjustment somewhere?

You can use the regular plate and you are correct in that it should make the button hole automatically. If the material does not move, the pessure on the pressure foot is not enough.

You can try the following:
First make sure you select a button hole patern.
You can also place a piece of stitch and tear paper underneath the material to help with the movement. If you dont have any, try normal tissue paper.

Hope this help you

I am not sure what you mean by knots. Your machine make re enforced stiches before making the buttonhole ziz zags. Have you tried making a buttonhole until the machine stops by itself?

Just purchased a Singer 4423 machine, need more detailed instructions for buttonholes

when you press the button hole option & then pull the button hole lever
down it will rest against the button hole foot, having the button in the
button hole foot help the machine gage the size the button hole needs
to be, if the machine keeps on sewing & doesn't stop automaticily then
there is something wrong with the button hole option.

Have old, (but good) 6217 c model. Cannot attach button hole foot, seems too long for the shank that you attach feet to. Only one hole in the shank and the shank on the button hole foot is too long for...

You are trying to attach a long shank foot to a short shank machine. Look for a short shank foot on either Ebay. You may also find it included within a "tin" of accessories at a local thrift shop. If neither of these options work for you check with your local fabric store or sewing machine repair shop for the correct button foot.

I can't remember how to sew a button hole....lost the manual . I don't remember what to "push" to get the machine to proceed through the "4 steps" of the programmed button hole.

I have a 180e, but cant put my hand on the manual tonight to clarify this issue for you.
From memory though, you need to go into the button hole button option, & look for stitch #60. The button sew application is automatic & its recommended that the #18 button foot be used.
As I said, that is from memory. Will check my manual asap & will clarify anything if needed, but I'm pretty sure thats the procedure, as I sewed buttons not that long ago. Hope this helps you.

My button holes aren't consistent -backing up doesn't work proper

It sounds as though you are using the Memory button hole setting which sews the BH forward on one side(leg of the button hole ) and backward on the other side. You have button holes on Numbers 11-16. I think #16 is the one you are trying to use but the others are easier. Put the button in the special foot, pull the BH lever down( It is located on the left side of the machine towards the rear of the machine ).Select #11 and the machine should sew both legs in the same direction. This machine has always made great button holes.

I try to make a button hole with the 9940 Singer machine and I continue to come up with the machine doing nothing. I follow the directions in the manual, the presser foot I've changed to the correct one...

To the left of the foot there is a silver button hole lever pull this down fully.

Make a note in your handbook for next time as recently this happen to me and it took me hours to work it out.

Hope this is your answer.
