Question about Averatec 3200 Notebook

Averatec won't boot

My several years old Averatec laptop (Windows XP) which I haven't used much the past few years totally died suddenly on it. The laptop was on when I was away, and when I came home, it had died, telling me to press any key to boot. Nothing works--no safe start, no debug start-up, etc. I can press F8 and get a few diagnostic screens, but nothing I set there helps. Also Del, as the Averatec start-up screen says to hit, gives me nothing that helps either. After the Windows start-up logo screen shows, a quick blue screen with about 1/2 page of text flashes on, but then quickly disappears. First question: anyway to capture that fleeting screen? It does say something about the problem, but I can't read it in a micro-second. Either F8 or the Del option as mentioned above does allow me to see three possible boot drives. All three, however, are in square brackets. Info. to the right says if the names are in parentheses (which I assume means square brackets here), the drives are not accessible. I do not have the recovery CD at this location (if I can find one at all). I'm resigned to the files on the computer being gone forever (it wasn't a major computer but I wanted it active for one specific use now since it's a low-energy using computer), but is there anyway I can restore some OS so I can run the one program I need on this computer? Anything free I can download, for example? Or any suggestions on what else to try. I did ensure the memory chip is secure in its slot, and F10 (which brings up restore on at least some computers) doesn't do anything. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Question: what is "PE type"?

Additional comment: I got the blue screen to stick around and the problem is what I thought--UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME. Instructions say to disable new hardware (is none) and software (is none), as well as BIOS options such as caching and shadowing, but since I can't get into the computer, I can't do any of this to my knowledge. The computer will not boot in any mode (safe, debug, etc.)

Thanks for the comment on the IDE/SATA to USB adapter. I'll look into that.

I appreciate the attempt, but Pause doesn't work at all. I've tried that and various other possibilities numerous times. But I did manage to get the screen to stick around another way.

That said, I did manage to get the blue screen to hang around and the problem is what I thought: UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME." The message then says to disable new HW and SW as well as BIOS options such as caching and shadowing, but since I can't get into anything, I can't do any of this (there is no new HW or SW anyway). Safe mode, debug mode, etc. do not work either.

Missed your comment on Linux and Wine the first time--sorry. I've been thinking about looking into Linux. I've heard a lot about it but have never used it. But I'd never heard of Wine. Any more information on what that is, where to find it (is it also free)? Or I'll just websearch for it... Sounds like if I can't find the recovery CD (which I won't know for another month, til I get to the location where it may be), Linux is probably the way to go. (No problem losing the special program--I can reinstall it from CD easily.)

Try to boot from a PE type CD or DVD. Google- pe boot disk. From there you can poke around without much danger of further damaging your PC. You may have a HW problem such as a faulty HD or controller,,, or it could be simply that Windowss is crapped. You can also remove the HD from the laptop and mount it on your desktop PC with an inexpensive (~$20-30) IDE/SATA to USB adapter. From there you can check it out without writing over your files.

A PE disk is a bootable CD / DVD with a Preinstalled Environment (OS) that is loaded into RAM and run on boot.

For MS info on these disks go here

Hellor
To catch the fleeting screen hit the Pause/Break Button it will stop the scrolling. By keeping your finger close to the key you can Press Pause, Read a few lines, then Pause, a few more till you read the whole message.

You can reinstall an old version of the OS, or even insatll Linux (it is free), but I will not guarantee that your special program will run. But if you install Wine on you Linux you can run Windows programs in virtual mode. Warning if your special program is on the hard drive you will erase it when you install Linux.

Hote it helps.

Contact Averatec and order recovery media, if they are still available.
If you cannot get a Windows XP OS to install, you can always try Linux. The Ubuntu distribution, and most other ones are free.

My 13 year old son laptop need be reset like new

There are a couple possible solutions to your problem. If the computer will still turn on and load windows, and I assume you are using Windows XP, you can try doing a system restore. To do this, go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and select System Restore. If system restore is enabled, you should be able to choose a date in the past when the laptop was working properly and restore the computer to that date. If you want to completely reload windows, you will need a Windows XP installation disc. Load the disc in the CD or DVD player and reboot the computer. You should see a screen asking you to press any key to boot from CD, go ahead and press Enter. You will now enter setup where you can reformat the hard drive and reload windows XP. Follow the on-screen instructions to delete any old partitions, and then create a new partition and format it using NTFS. The windows XP installation will continue after the hard drive is formatted. If, when you reboot the computer with the installation disc in the drive, you are not prompted to boot from CD, you may need to reboot and press F2 or F12 to change the boot selection to the CD or DVD drive so it will load the CD first before it tries to load your original Windows installation.

My averatec booting problem

The SMART is the monitoring system that is embedded in all hard disks - if it reports a failure it means that the hard disk has died. You need to replace the disk and only after that you can reinstall.

My laptop starts, then when it shows the windows xp page, it like reboots again by itself repeating the same thing..what's going on?

Press F8 as the computer starts to boot to enter safe mode. Check that there is nothing silly going on once it has booted and then try to restart.

Averatec laptop running Windows XP keeps restarting itself

A couple of suggestions...

First off you might have a hadware getting ready to fail. Follow this link it might be helpful

http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch001088.htm

Second, it might be you have a virus. If so try booting into safe mode run cntrl+alt+del and look for files in caps (especially LSASS.exe and WINLOGON.exe) if these files are corrupted then you might want to start backing up your data and reinstalling the OS. Otherwise run a virus scanner like xoftspy to check for viruses.

Lastly in XP, for system restore to work you needed to make periodical check points so it is correct if the last restore point was August 2008.

The only other thing I can think of is going into bios and seeing if the computer reboots itself. This would probably eliminate any virus and point out a harware failure.
