VTECH V Smile TV learning system part...

I'm working on a V Smile (orange and purple) that has one broken pin on the Card Edge Connector Slot. I can't get any info out of VTECH. I would love to know where I can buy a replacement card slot for that unit, it is otherwise in good condition. Is there any help for it?

I am looking at foxconn and 3M connectors to find a replacement. It looks like the same pin spacing as an ISA connector. The key is not the usual bit that slides in between the connections. Instead they have removed one set of connections and inserted a key. I think the board is actually thinner than a PC card. I need to measure. The ISA slot has more space at either end of the card which would cause the cartridges to line up improperly.

My childs vsmile switched on but then switched itselfs off, changed the batteries & it worked for a few seconds then switched off again & will not switch on.

Try this: press and hold the ON button for 45+ seconds WITHOUT the batteries. Then put new batteries in. It worked for me. I bought a second unit at the thrift store and thought it was broken until I tried that. Works just fine now.

Pin bent on V Smile Controller

Always make sure there is no power before you start working on it. You can try to carefully bend them back into place with a tiny screw driver (jewlers screw driver) or pick. You can look at where the connector goes into to see where it should be. If its bent too far or too fast it will probably break.

V-smile not working once cartridge is placed in slot

Here's the solution to your V smile: Oxidized connectors! Remeber the original Nintendo back in the 80s? You had to repeatedly reinsert the cartridge so that it would work properly. The V smile has the same problem. They use tin plated copper contacts on the game cartridges as well as the internal connector. All newer electronics use gold plated contacts because gold does not oxidize (rust, corrode). You'll need a very fine sheet of sandpaper. Start by lightly sanding the game cartridge connector (you have to expose the contacts by pushing the plastic part in). Make sure you wipe the contacts clean with a rag, and do not touch the contacts with your fingers! Then you have to do the same with the console's internal connector. The danger here is bending one of the pins inside so be very careful. The real solution to this would be to replace the connector but no one sells it (checked ebay, Vtech). Should last a couple of months to a few years, depending on relative humidity and use. If your V smile turns on normally without a game cartridge, then this is your problem. Symptoms vary from no power to corrupted graphics to no sound as well as random turn off (with a cartridge, no problems without a cartridge). I've done a few lately and all are working like new. Let me know how it goes, but I take no responsability for bent pins, damaged connectors, fire, earthquake,...

Various Smartridges stopped working

You may need to inspect the inside of the cartridge slot for dust/dirt - swab it with a tiny amount of cleaning alcohol and see if you get better results.

I Buy the Vtech V.Smile TV Learning System and it donot work

Make sure the power cord is plugged in and that the red/white/yellow cables are plugged properly into the TV. Also, as you plug the red/white/yellow cables into the TV, make sure you turn the TV to the right channel - it is different for every TV. For instance, the red/white/yellow on the front of my Sony is labelled Video 2 - yours might be labelled FRONT, AUX, or something else.

Things you can try to get the V.Smile TV Learning System to work:
1) Press the Reset – Press and hold the ON button for about 10 seconds
2) Make sure the game is inserted far enough into the system, and that it is pointing in the right direction. You may occasionally need to clean the contacts.
3) Also, make sure you are using the supplied power cord/adapter, not batteries. Batteries cause more problems than they’re worth.
