Kenmore top load will not spin or agitate

I tried the lid switch it seems to be working. I hear a slight humming near by the motor for about 10 seconds then it stops with a small click on its own.

Re: kenmore top load will not spin or agitate

Drive coupler is bad available on ebay or sears appliance parts little bit time consuming but not hard.remove the top agitator by grasping it and pulling up remove the plastic cover and the bolt under it ,remove the agitator. lay the machine on its side (water may leak out) remove the water pump by prying the clips from the top of the pump slide the electrical connector from motor and start capacitor ,move the clamps on the hoses down from tub and slide hoses off .remove the 3 9/19 bolts holing the transmission in place slide it out remove two 5/16 bolts from clips holding motor and slide motor off transmission replace rubber drive coupling ,installation is reverse of removal

Washer not spinning

If you are neither spinning nor agitating and you can hear the motor running (humming or buzzing) the the problem is with the coupling. See the first link below to repair.

If the motor does not run, only fills, no drain, no buzz no hum then the problem is most likely with the lid switch, see the second link. There is video near the bottom of that page showing how to replace it. Let me know if this helps.

Washer souds like trying to engage but won't

If the motor hums and will not pump out or spin, the motor is bad. It reverses direction and the reverse windings appear to be burned out.

I have a Kenmore top loading washer model #110 and won't agitate

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer.!retrieve.pd?pop=true&modelNumber=110.23912100

Also see the Whirlpool (Kenmore) Service Manual for top load, direct drive washers.$FILE/L-55.pdf

The first thing I'd try is using a different cycle. If the washer works as it should, the problem points to the timer.

I'd also check to make sure that when replacing the switch, the connections to the timer haven't come loose.

Since you've replaced the Lid Switch, the motor has power for the drain and spin cycles.

These washers use a reversing motor. The motor turns one way for agitating and reverses for the drain and spin.

Since you cannot hear anything when it is supposed to be agitating, the problem does point to the timer or motor.

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

Enter your model number and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

The Kenmore / Whirlpool top load uses a reversing motor to initiate the pump for draining and the transmission to spin.

If you cannot hear the motor trying to turn the pump, (but the washer will agitate) the problem points to the Timer, or the Lid Switch.

Try to bypass the Lid Switch by removing the Console and jumping the two outermost pins on the switch.

This is the Whirlpool PDF on installation and maintenance of direct drive washers. See the section on how to bypass the lid switch and on the transmission.

Following is an illustrated description of how to remove the cabinet on Kenmore / Whirlpool top load direct drive washers.

Since it won't drain, the problem points to the lid switch. You already have the cabinet off so replacing the switch isn't too difficult.
The Sears site has the Sears (and probably Whirlpool) part number.

I have a Kenmore 70 series (Mo No 110.20722990) and it will not agitate or spin. The motor is not running when it is supposed to. I hear the hum and the lights slightly dim (as they always did)when it is...

If you've confirmed that the lid switch is good and the motor coupling is intact, it sounds like you have a either bad drive motor, or drive motor switch. If the motor is humming, however, more than likely the switch is working The following link explains how to replace the motor:

The part number for the drive motor (which includes the switch) is 3352287. The cheapest place I found it listed was at for about $135.

If you do determine that the switch is bad, the part number is 8529896. The cheapest place I found it listed was for about $62.

If you have questions, or require additional assistance, please let me know. I hop this helps you.

NOTE: It still may be a good idea to replace the motor coupling while you have the washer apart. The part number is 285753A. carries it for about $11.

I have a kenmore series 90 and the agitate and spin will not work, you hear a humming noise or maybe a slight grind

This problem is commonly attributed to a lid switch malfunction. If the model number you have this listed under is correct, the lid switch is mounted under the washer top casing, on the right hand side. It is activated by a plastic piece on the lid (called a "Lid Strike") through a small hole on the rim of the wash tub opening. In many cases the lid strike breaks off the lid, or the lid switch becomes loose and no longer makes contact. Inspect the lid to make sure the lid strike is still intact, and then inspect the mounting screws (adjacent to the small opening on the wash tub rim) and make sure they are snug. The humming sound you hear when the lid is closed may just be the timer motor running. If your washer is not configured in this manner, please post back with your COMPLETE model number (located along the tub rim under the lid) so I can confirm how your washer IS configured. I hope this helps you.

If you determine that your lid switch is broken, please let me know and I will provide you with the steps necessary to repair it yourself (simple repair job). I can also give advice on where to purchase a replacement.
