That model does not have a built in recovery partition. You would need the recovery disc set from HP.

Hp compaq laptop how to restore to factory default?

Go to Start/All Programs/HP Tools/HP PC System Recovery

If this doesn't work then try pressing the F10 key multiple times during the bootup to access the recovery console.

If this still doesn't get things fixed then you need to re-install XP

Press F10 during the statr of the laptop, it will access the hidden Recovery partition. From there follow the instructions on the screen.
If F10 doesn't work then you will have to order and use recovery disks

I want to know if my laptop has a recovery program on it? N how to find and use it please

By default all the hp notebook and desktops come with a recovery partition. To access it boot the computer, and on the Compaq logo Start Tapping the F11 key on your keyboard. This will take you to the Recovery Manager. Click on the Advance options button to get the various options for recovery and backup.
note: you will be able to access the Recovery partitions only if you have not made any changes to the system hardware or Operating system.
Hope you find this information helpful.
Thank you for choosing Fixya.

I can't access my system recovery

Are you sure you did not by anyway temper or delete it? Are you also sure a recovery disk came with your system?

If you are sure you did not temper it and you are sure it came with your system, click "Start", click "Programs", from programs look out for "Recovery Manager". Or Shut down your system, turn it on again, press "F11" before the system starts booting and you will access your system recovery.

Best wishes.

Compaq Presario Recovery needed??

If the compaq has not had the hard-drive altered, there is a restore partition. Normally you require recovery disks to start this process, but you can turn the computer on, and press F11 repeatedly to access the partition. I'm not sure what will happen without the recovery disks, but it's worth a try.
I am assuming the Compaq/HP system restore utility in Windows is long gone?

Boot into the recovery console and run; chkdsk /r Note the space between dsk and /r. If you are unsure of how to get into the recovery console, and have access to a Windows CD; 1. Boot the computer with the Windows CD 2. Select the option to enter the recovery console 3. At the prompt, type CHKDSK /R and press enter (this may take a while). If you do not have access to a Windows CD, but DO have access to a working system with a CD-R or CD/RW, download the XP Recovery Console CD ISO* and burn it to CD using DeepBurner (or whichever application you have that supports such (DeepBurner, Nero, MagicISO etc)). http://archives.mysteryfcm.co.uk/?f=System/Diagnostics/XP_Recovery_Console_CD_ISO * This CD ISO will load pretty much the same as the XP installation program but will NOT provide installation options, ONLY the recovery console. This can be used regardless of whether you are using 2000, XP, 2003 or Vista. Once you have the ISO burnt, boot the computer using the CD and go to the recovery console. Once at the recovery console, type the following and press enter; CHKDSK /R
