What is network adapter mean

A network adaptor is an interface device that allows your PC to communicate with other computers and the internet. There are wireless and wired adaptors.

Wireless adaptors usually connect your PC to the network through a wireless router and modem. Wired adaptors (also known as ethernet adaptors) connect your PC to another computer, a router or a modem using a cable.

Get ''pending'' for ever when trying to connect to wireless AP. Log says can't set wireless frequency - operation not supported and then DHCPDISCOVER never gets an answer. If I use static IP simply get...

I had a similar problem. Hit "Fn"+"F2" to cycle the wireless off then on again. Allow about 30-60 seconds to get IP and DNS info from the access point.
Then, using the network adaptor icon in the utility bar (on the bottom right), right click, select "all network connections". Click each network adaptor and from the "Connection Tab" Disconnect each adaptor. Then restart the wireless adaptor with the "Connect" from the "Connection Tab".
I'm assuming that there are no funny settings in the Properties which are preconfiguring the adaptor for a previous connection. If so remove any present values. Leave the connection set as DHCP as this is teh most common way that adaptors will get their settings from teh access point your attempting to connect to. Cheers.

I am reinstalling my internet connection on my laptop because I had to have the laptop repaired. I am getting an error message that the WPC54G is inactive.

try reinstalling the driver for the wireless adaptor.

The WPC54G is a linksys wireless adaptor installed on your laptop. It is possible the technician overlooked reinstalling the driver, and should be called upon to correct his mistake. If the adaptor worked before you took it in, and now it doesn't, he/she is liable to fix the problem.
